There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

I don't know if it is a good idea for this to be so transparent. I believe the info that is currently on the SIM card should stay private and independent of a blockchain.
I could be wrong though.

The applications of blockchain technology seem to be amazing.
We will need to wait for some time to see which ones succeed though

Currently, the system faces very existent obstacles in its way, one of them being carrier companies having to update the whole infrastructure in order to discard the now fallen in price SIM cards.

Bitcoin replacement for SIM cards can be an attractive idea, but it has to be thoroughly analyzed in terms of costs and benefits.
The idea is great and all but as the article said, let's not get too excited yet, it's far from happening anytime soon.

Don't know about using a Bitcoin-sidechain, but a similar process using Blockchain technology with a faster time of 15 seconds per block would be more workable. The other thing that would need to be taken into consideration would be compatibility with the different networks that the SIMs would've used (i.e. for some phones, you'd need different SIMs to access 3G compared to a 4G service).
