I am using GUI miner running my XFX HD5850 at stock clocks using -v -w128

I am only getting 215 Mhash/s with it. Why are some people getting over 400 Mhash/s with their 5850's?

Use https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0
or https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=75786.0 .
Select the phatk kernel according to the guides there.
I OC all of  mine to 875core/300mem/stock voltage, and get around 380MH/s . 970core/300mem/stock v. can push to 400Mh/s.

CCC limits the core OC to 775 Mhz on my card. I have a 2011 driver, should I update it to the latest?

Use a older sdk/driver like 2.5 if I remember correctly. I prefer using cgminer in this case as if I do not delete the .bin files generated, I can revert back to the newest sdk without any decrease in performance.

This is what I do to get excellent hash rates.

I use 11.12 CCC with 2.5 SDK

Download your appropriate 2.5 SDK, what ever fits your operating system.

http://developer.amd.com/sdks/AMDAPPSDK/downloads/pages/AMDAPPSDKDownloadArchive.aspx

you can find 11.12 CCC driver anywhere on the net, sdk is kinda harder to find so I linked it

It's excellent that others posted some other miners but it's up to you.

Get latest GUIMiner https://bitcointalk.org/?topic=3878.0 download it, install it. Select File, new miner, new opencl miner.

In the new tab, select the pool you want to mine at from the drop down list, fill out your login info and pop
Code:
-v -w128 -f 7

in to the flag area, you can adjust the -f flag up and down, I found 7 best suits my processor, if you are on your desktop using the mining card set -f to 25. It's the aggression.

If you are like me, you will find this the easiest way to gain 400 mh/s.

I've got my card set like so using sapphire trixx
1000 Core/350 memory/1.125voltage/75% fan speed. if you see temps raise any higher than 74c-75c, shutdown the miner, reboot. Got for default voltage with the highest core setting as possible without crashing, maybe 915Core. Go from there.

I just use SDK 2.1, 12.1 drivers, cgminer 2.2.3, W7 x64.
Core: 925
Mem:315
Flags: -v 2 -w 256
Result: 390Mh/s

I think your low hashrate is because the sdk and drivers, with stock 5850 you must be >300Mh/s.

If Ravious is using the card alone, by Ravious not being on the desktop and mining at the same time he should be all good with 2.1 but you should explicitly state he will have terrible desktop lag by using SDK 2.1 if he does use the computer all the time as his main system. If not, by all means, use SDK 2.1, if so, use 2.5.

As I'm typing this, I'm using 2.1 with intensity "d" in cgminer and there is no lag at all, still getting 300-340Mh/s. My other 2 cards are set with intensity 10, getting almost 390-400Mh/s. When I'm AFK I set all cards to I:10.

You can bypass CCC overclock limits by using MSI Afterburner and modifying it.

930 mhz core = 350 mhash\s and this is optimal IMHO
Sapphire 5850 Toxic
More mhz is possible but in long terms it will lead to gpu deterioration.
