I wonder the same thing although I do not own a top-of-the-line computer. I know I probably cannot be profitable with electricity consumption costs, but I was thinking to try out something to run on my laptop when doing less CPU-intensive jobs like watching videos. I am also thinking of getting a new computer and wonder if I should target for something specific to also make use of the possible mining. Thanks everybody in advance, I am a complete noob in this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I heard memorycoin is good. It has wallets for various OS platforms. It's traded on 3 different exchanges. It also has some exclusive merchants where you can spend the actual currency. Okay, so do a lot of coins but it does show dev activity.

I am still mining XMR and XDN, i feel these coins have some potential. I normally listen to people's opinions but take a decision on my own gut feeling. Take suggestions from everyone here, but make a choice based on your gut is the advise i can give you. Each of the suggestions mentioned have their positives but ultimately, choose something that is to your liking and not because someone suggests it. Even the most brilliant of minds cannot understand the current fall in Bitcoin, so its unlikely that we have got it all figured out. If we did, we would all be millionaires, lol!

An explanation from the dev regarding the block reward: Wolf, you're welcome to do so; also I'll welcome GPU if anybody could do. Well, I don't want to freak out all CPU miners because of this possibility or possible existing GPU miners already. People mining XMG should take a look at it's block reward design. Don't mine too hard, or PoW blocks will stop yielding coins (block chain still going). Different people have different understanding though, check out the paper (need update upon the coming hardfork, but the same concept applies). http://arxiv.org/abs/1409.7948The reward is designed best at the CPU mining level. Anyone fire up CPU farm or GPU may push reward towards a trivial level. The coming hard fork will tailor the reward at a much accurate level. Remember, the more CPU miners (not too high hashrate though), the more secure of the reward. The more GPU miners (let's say in the future and assuming they have significantly high hashrate), no actual rewards will be yielded. Please remember to update your wallet above v1.2.0:
Details: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=735170.msg9991269#msg9991269p.s., I am actually keen to see how magi's block reward design could cut down ASIC miners in a scrypt coin.

Because i got this same question ( 10 months later xd ) i dont want to create a new topic but bump this one. ATM i am mining for a few weeks / months XDN coin, its CPU only, well u can use a high end GPU but it dont give u much more hash then a CPU. So lookin to the power consumption when using a GPU u can beter use ur CPU instead of a GPU.
But i am wondering if there are some newer / maybe beter coins then XDN what is CPU only. XDN is proven to be worth to mining, it got a active community / dev team and on exchanges they are doing well. But i just want to know, are there better and maybe newer coins then XDN?
For what i know the only most profit CPU coin is XDN ( digitalnote )but the search function on this forum sucks so hard that its almost not possible to find a CPU only coin what is not 5 years old and death on this forum. Using CPU only or something in the search function on this forum result in a few CPU coins what are very old and death ( like all the coins what are named in this topic, all are death and abonded)

I know it is not much that I will gain, but I might have some cloud server CPUs available, and I am wondering about the current state of affairs. I had long stopped mining, so I really don't know about the situation. Which of the common algos are CPU only (i.e. do not have GPUmining software yet)? http://www.coinwarz.com/cryptocurrencyhttp://www.cryptocoinsinfo.com/Quark Groestl Blake-256 NeoScrypt Lyra2REv2 CryptoNight Qubit Yescript Ethash WhirlpoolX ZR5 M7M Primesix Where can I find profitability information? Thanks! EDIT: There is actually a DASHcoin CPUminer - worthwhile trying?

I think the cryptonight coins are the only profitable coins to be mined with CPU. It is not profitable to mine with GPU.

cpu mining is not profitable computer or vps. i do not advise cpu mining because you can not earn as you pay vps or electric bill.

No way you would get profit. If you want to hold the coin, maybe. XMR is the most you can get right now, with high amount of hash power ofc.

HOdlcoin is good right now to mine on CPU. Still possible to get blocks of 50 HODL solo mining on a CPU. High interest rates, you can mine a block of 50, tie it up in a 1 year term deposit, and withdraw upwards of 2000 HODL in a year's time. Won't last long. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1317918

CPU mining is more efficient for Monero than with GPU. But the difficulty is too high, it might not be profitable for you.

CPU mining is more efficient for Monero than with GPU. But the difficulty is too high, it might not be profitable for you. The profitability depends on the electricity cost. It might be profitable again for the Monero as the price has risen.
