What operating system are you running?

If it's Ubuntu or something like that then you have to run bitcoin-qt as root (using the sudo command).  Just type "sudo" (without the quotation marks) and then drag the bitcoin-qt file into the terminal window.  Then hit enter type in your password and it should run fine.

I would do that if the money still isn't there I don't know any specific way of recovering them.  I've heard that you can do a hex by hex scan of your hard drive and recover them that way but I wouldn't know what to look for if you do, I'm a newb as well especially when it comes to indepth code things like this.

Well, the message does say you don't have enough disk space.
You need at least 2.5GB for the blockchain. I wouldn't risk running Bitcoin on a system with less than 5 GB of free space because of pagefiles, etc.

And, yes, the bitcoins are still there, you just haven't reached the blocks were your addresses/transactions exist, so you don't see them in your wallet, but they will be there after the blockchain download, don't worry.
