Forgive me if this is off topic, but this gave me a related idea...
Create a channel that anybody can join, but nobody can talk (by default). In order to speak, you must pay. I'm thinking something like 0.0001 BTC per character (off the top of my head). To do this, you message gribble and it gives you an address, you send some coins there and they are on your account.
edit... Heck, I just realized that since it's the same gribble across all channels, then the channel can be invite only, and you have to pay to join as well.
Yeah, I could just integrate gribble into this if nanotube OKs it.

Just controlling the exchange rates, nothing big. That freeze on mtgox trades? Can't say too much, but yeah.

Just so you know, charging for channel acces is likely against FreeNode's Terms of Service (and since you're doing it so openly and obviously, all anyone would have to do is point a FreeNode channel operator to this thread and you're done for). I'm not necessarily opposed to a fee-based member's only club in principle, but if you're going to do it, you have to find another network.
In case you weren't aware, FreeNode is a non-profit, donation-supported IRC network dedicated to peer-directed projects. That's why so many Free Software projects have their chat rooms there (Ubuntu, Python, Wikipedia, etc.; you name it). Charging for access to a room on a non-profit IRC network is just bad form regardless, unless you're going to turn around and donate all of your proceeds to FreeNode so they can keep the network running.

Oh, yep, I'm donating everything to Freenode. Not for-profit at all, just a way of keeping out the trolls. (In fact, I considered just putting donations into a blackhole address, but figured to donate to FN instead.)

But if it's to avoid trolling, why stop people from just joining?

Why would anyone want to join a pay-per-character channel?
I could sort of understand it if there was a huge audience for such a thing, in which case paying for the right to say something would be equivalent to paying for television ads, but there won't be a huge audience.
