Just noticed this.

https://www.bitstamp.net/article/bitstamp-is-open-for-business-better-than-ever/

"As a note of thanks to our loyal customers, all transactions conducted on Bitstamp through the end of the North American Bitcoin Conference -- January 17th (at 11:59pm UTC) -- will be commission-free."

I noticed that as well. Thinking I might move some coins over there for some quick trading if there are no fees Smiley

that's the only way they can retain majority of the their customers - do what the Chinese did - zero fees.

Well I've got to praise their effort and what they have done so far to instill back confidence of customers.
The 1 btc to Jimmy Fallon seems to send a message across that says "hey we are fine, have something on us" and the commission free is somehow acting like a bait to get people to be back trading like normal.

Their order book has now almost three times more orders in it than last night shortly after they re-opened. People seem to be getting more confidence in them again.

Observe how quickly crowd's mood changed from "fuck centralized exchanges" when they were closed to "wow nice business" when they opened and announced zero fees Smiley

Those might not be the same people posting these sentiments. I bet that the folks with a lot at stake at Bitstamp where more inclined to just sit quiet and wait it out, while those with no money on the line were quicker to point out the risks of centralized exchanges. Now that Bitstamp has reopened, the latter group has been silenced somewhat (though there is still risk in keeping money on an exchange!), while relieved customers started to post congratulations to Bitstamp.

We'll see if the volume "counts" when there are no fees on Bitstamp, because apparently it doesn't count when it happens on fee free Chinese exchanges.

Don't keep them there. They're still 18 thousand Bitcoins short. Until Bitstamp has an audit, keep only minimal funds there.

"what should we do, two options: buy 18k coins at market to compensate for the hack; or tip 1 bitcoin to some well known person to show we had 1 bitcoin left, and run fractional op after that? hmm tough choices"

saw this prior to all that volume yesterday and immediately knew why. this only makes volume analysis all the more difficult. no fees give incentive to try to use volume to manipulate the price.
