This is not bitcoin's fault, if you saved your online-banking login details as plaintext in an email; the same thing could happen.

Sorry for your loss OP, thieves will be thieves!

Damn, who trusts everything to their email?  Roll Eyes

Pwn my email, can't get my coins or anything, pwn my mining host, can't get anything except a temporary diversion of hash power, pwn my poloniex get some altcoin dust but it won't help you get my email, my wallet or mining host, FFS keep everything isolated. When you set anything up, pretend you are on your worst enemy's computer and using your worst enemy's email.

I'll say again, paranoia is appropriate.

It would have been same effect if he had stored credit card details in his email or sent them by email. Or his online banking credentials. Only difference is, that he hasn't got big brother to make up the loss of his lunch money, though all of them have hidden in their agreements about "taking reasonable care" of your details, so may refuse to cover loss if it transpires you used plaintext email. On the one or two occasions where I found it essential to transmit credentials over unsecured channels, I split them up so portions went over email, skype, ICQ, and SMS.

i had wallet on blocrkchain and all my wallet details was saved in my gmail folder like identifier password and wallet address etc. so to login to my wallet i always used to login to my email first. and also i signup with same email for localbitcoins.

I am not familiar with"blocrkchain".  Do you mean blockchain.info or the blockchain? They are not the same. Saying "blockchain" is ambiguous and makes a difference about losing private keys or blockchain.info account info.

Sorry for the loss, but not much you can do.

You were dumb and saved details in your e-mail. Sorry for your loss, but hopefully this'll make you learn to never store private information somewhere easily accessible.

No the flaw is that its too damn complicated for the average person to secure their bitcoins properly, people are scared to get their bitcoins hacked because many are being hacked so easily. Even fcking exchanges get hacked, what do you expect for users?

i think the average person needs a crash course on bitcoin security, heck i think at this point a bitcoin for dummies would be a good move.

Bitcoin is not made for "normal people" . The normal people will never use Bitcoin just because it's too hard to understand and you have no guarantees for your funds.

Now, you can have the funds, next day not (see Bistamp) . Bistamp are not "normal people". they were one of the biggest exchangers and they just lost 5 MIL . hahahah

Managing the security of bitcoin is never an easy task, especially when people already get used to blindly trust their banks. It seems taking care of your own wealth is really a pain  Grin And that's the reason banks exist for thousands of years

The access should be granted by combining at least 2 physically isolated devices. Which means if the bitcoin is stored online, then the password should never be stored online. Writing the password on paper is a general practice that is used by IT security experts

Well donning my Captain Hindsight suit, it appears this worm could have been defeated by some very fundamental and basic security practices...

Almost 129 fucking years later, people still die. This automobile has one huge flaw, nobody understands how to drive this shit. Benz is a failure.

More than 1 million fcking years later, homo sapiens still die of diseases. This race has one huge flaw, nobody understands how to not get sick. Science is a failure.

Snark all you want guys,
but the takeaway from the all too numerous threads like this one is

BitCoin ?? Why bother ..
Mass adoption ?? not a chance ..

I'm sure the OP will give his friends and associates
a glowing review of his experience with BTC ..

Managing and storing your Bitcoin properly means you have to educate yourself and have personal responsibility.
If you somehow get screwed, 90% of the time its because the user didn't do what they should have done. Not because Bitcoin is flawed.

Stop with the BS discussion about Bitcoin being too hard for the average person, and thus no mass adoption.

If true, then so be it. But don't dumb down Bitcoin for them.
