I need a Japanese style manga artist to draw stills for a Japanese language learning book.

The great thing about this is that if you are any good there is a large chance you can monetize parts of your existing portfolio since what I want is very generic. I will even take sketches. I am looking for a general highschool theme.

You can choose to be paid on a piecework basis (per still) or per-book, which is negotiable depending on how much art you can provide.

This has now become an urgent need, I really really need someone who can do this kind of art. The op was posted months and months ago and I can't believe no one here can do this, or that no one knows anyone that can do it. I would really rather get this done in the community if possible... I do live in Asia so finding someone wouldn't be too much trouble (half the highschool kids I teach can draw ok) but bitcoins... you know.. I prefer dealing in bitcoins.

What exactly do you have in mind? Professionally I'm not sure about my character skills yet but I can certainly do backgrounds and stuff for you, also, I only joined this forum a few days ago, I'm working on a manga myself.

Tell me what you want and I'll see if I can't get a rough sketch up, i.e what kind of scenes in this highschool theme

Pretty much anything. If it's a highschool theme (classrooms, people going to school or going home, teachers, students, bicycles, and so forth) it's good. Seasonal themes play strongly, especially fall/autumn since it's the start of school, and spring/summer.

Themes/styles I am looking for:
project a-ko
sailor moon
gunbuster
macross (and macross frontier)
bubblegum crisis
ranma 1/2 (scenes like when going to and coming back from school)
totoro (school scenes)
naruto
hikaru no go

i'd lke to avoid sharp lines and distorted character developments found in places like:
dragonball
vampire hunter d
fist of the north star
one piece

Just off the top of my head, a general idea. I guess you could say I am looking for KyoAni style (see: http://animeyume.com/blog/2011/11/09/anime-art-styles/).

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but I know an artist who is very eager to draw things...
She may or may not accept payment in BTC.  Below are a couple of sites showing things she's drawn.  I think she's into "furries", but it does seem like she can draw many other things very well as well.

I also know another very good artist, though I am not sure if he is into anime or not.  I cannot find the original drawing at the moment, but my profile picture here is a very small piece of a large and fantastic wallpaper drawing he did.

Thanks for all the info! I'll give it a shot after I have some coffee and see what happens, never been asked to draw background stills before Cheesy

Edit: Is there a specific resolution etc. you want it drawn at? Let me know.

Are you familiar with pixiv.net? You can occasionally catch some good art on there in the style I'm after. I'll have a look later and post some links to styles/images that would be a good match. Other than that, the KyoAni style as outlined in the link I provided is pretty much what I am looking for.

Let me know if the scene is right for you Usagi and I'll turn it into that style, the thing is I can't just make a scene you don't like because otherwise it will be a waste of time and you won't get what you want out of it.

Well, do you have a portfolio? I'll know right away if I can use your art or not. The key behind this is that the style must be instantly recognizable by fans of the genre as anime/manga style art.

Here are a few ideas; you will see that what I am looking for is scene based without a strong character focus. Your sketch looks OK but I'm more interested in seeing some of the art you've already done to get a feel for what you can do. This isn't something you can just pick up; i'd say that if you don't already have a few hundred drawings done you won't be able to do this.

These will give you a pretty good idea of what i'm after; these are all pulled from the seifuku tag on konachan.

http://konachan.com/post/show/69657/bicycle-brown_hair-car-cherry_blossoms-clouds-fuji
http://konachan.com/post/show/147441/akiyama_yukari-black_hair-brown_hair-girls_und_pan
http://konachan.com/post/show/145821/awakumo-original-seifuku
http://konachan.com/post/show/145517/blush-brown_hair-game_cg-hinasaki-seifuku-tagme_-c
http://konachan.com/post/show/145112/black_hair-blush-game_cg-hinasaki-seifuku-tagme_-c
http://konachan.com/post/show/143523/blue_hair-long_hair-mahou_shoujo_madoka_magica-mik
http://konachan.com/post/show/141158/baseball_bat-black_hair-fan-instrument-nerima-orig
http://konachan.com/post/show/140185/alice_margatroid-book-group-hakurei_reimu-izayoi_s

Essentially the themes revolve around students going about their daily life, especially going to and coming home from school. Students waiting for you to join them, waiting for the bus, talking to their friends, in class between classes, in the hall, etc.

things to avoid: overtly sexual themes, students standing around doing nothing (character development shots altho ONE such shot might be ok ala http://konachan.com/post/show/138371/animal-aqua_eyes-black_hair-blonde_hair-blue_eyes-), probably teachers too

Anyways I pulled these off the first 40 pages at konachan, there's another 350 pages of seifuku alone, the main problem with contacting the artists thru konachan is that konachan pulls art from pixiv and other sites, and the artists are usually not around or only speak Japanese. So actually a go-between would be good too. But anyway, that pretty much outlines what I am after.

a few more catches from konachan..

As for money, I'm hoping to spend between $1000 and $2000 on this project, for 30 to 40 images. It of course depends greatly on the quality of the image itself. Overall I think you could expect to submit about 100 images and have just under half accepted, assuming you were aiming at themes like the ones in the examples given. Altho to be fair towards the end of the project you would know pretty much what I want and there would be less rejects.

The other option would be to set a price (say $1200-$1500) and you are paid upon a certain number of images which are used for the book; again a portfolio here would be useful because you could monetize your previous work.

http://s1134.beta.photobucket.com/user/Lethn/library/ - This is where I regularly dump my art so I can have people look at it, even if I'm not interested in working on it anymore

This is the kind of thing you can expect from me if I go at it, I'm almost finished with this but it's still WIP obviously.

Thanks for all the info, I have a much clearer idea of what you want now so I have more to work with.

That is pretty good but it is a kind of western style. A lot of people draw like this, I don't mean to say the art itself is bad, but it's in a different style from what I am looking for.

Check out my friends art, she does some manga style stuff with her art for zelda/link I think kinda in the direction you are looking for, but its not cheap she does it as her profession.

Cool, I checked it out, it reminds me of Easley's early work for TSR, in that vein. But it's just not the right style.
