I want people opinions on this:

I'm planning to open a website that accept and show anonymously every donations (in bitcoin or not) that will serve to pay for advertising for bitcoin through newspaper, radio, subway billboards or any good publicity deal that someone can find around the world. I think this can be a good idea to improve visibility to increase its demand.

I want to know if people are willing to make such donation for such an idea and if so how much are you willing to donate?

Whoever mines the block which ends up containing your transaction will get its fee.

advertising for bitcoin through newspaper, radio, subway billboards

I can't imagine an approach that would give less bang for the bitcoin, except maybe sending them to 1BitcoinEaterAddressDontSendf59kuE

[Edit, don't send bitcoins there -- they disappear.]

I think this can be a good idea to improve visibility to increase its demand.

In the past 24 hours, I got timeouts trying to use Bitcoin's most popular eWallet and I got a "sorry this site isn't important enough for us to fix it right now" message for one of the most popular Bitcoin web sites.

I don't know that promoting to the masses would be something that helps anyone, at this point.

So tell me at what point it will be? And how giving visibility to bitcoin can be a bad idea?

I think the fundamentals of bitcoin are good, but it's still really a baby economy. It is quite the opposite of hassle free. Right now the focus should be on using and understanding it ourselves and preparing it for more widespread adoption, but the nature of the economy is such that organic growth is the best. Undue media popularity causes the kind of rapid boom+bust that BTCUSD saw last year, where people who are unaware of the hassles/dangers/caveats/rough edges buy in and then dump when a relatively normal thing for an economy as immature as ours happens (theft, collapse of infrastructure, etc.)

I'm selling great Minion Games like The Manhattan Project, Kingdom of Solomon and Venture Forth at 4% off retail starting June 2012. PM me or go to my thread in the Marketplace if you're interested.

For Settlers/Dominion/Carcassone etc., I do email gift cards on Amazon for a 5% fee. PM if you're interested.

You are probably right on this. Bitcoin is maybe not ready for mass media but still deserve more visibility than it has actually.

Don't waste your time. Someone else already tried this months ago. Your better off asking for handouts in Lending.

Wait a few years with spreading bitcoin to the masses. It's far from ready for the public.
Let's make it a working system and work out all the flaws first. Add essential features, make it easy/usable for my grandma. etc. etc.

I asked this a while ago. If you have to ask your not worthy of donations nobody will trust you will do it correctly, maybe produce a sketch and some story boards at the least(just a suggestion, as ive been down this road). Futher more bitcoin is still in beta we dont want it to get explosive, just yet. we just want it to grow as the devs add more features and test everything. Once out of beta we go btc crazy
