I was in a middle of a transaction and it just froze so I killed the process and just to reopen it and it won't load up without freezing. have i currupted the wallet?

You could try putting them on a different machine, installing MultiBit on that machine and opening them there.
The file formats are the same between Mac, Windows, Linux
