I finally got this working, instructions on how to compile and run bitcoind on a Raspberry Pi:

I have been running bitcoind on a raspi. It worked fine
but after a couple of months my SD card was destroyed.
This happened 2 times. So I stopped this effort.

I have been running bitcoind on a raspi. It worked fine

move partitions /tmp /tmpfs /var to and USB
move the blockchain external HDD
