Hey guys,
Can anyone explain to me in simple terms what ASIC is exactly and how it is meant to be so much more powerful than GPU mining?
I understand the difference in power between GPU and CPU but now between GPU and ASIC. I'm thinking of getting some of the Butterfly Labs new ASIC miners [When they are finally released].
Also, When the ASIC comes out will GPU mining be left behind like CPU mining currently is?

yes i have ordered a SC single.
and i'm seriously considering a 1TH/s MiniRig.
although we have most likely missed the boat on the first shippments, so im assuming ill have mine by dec (hopefully)

What do you mine with at the moment, I only use two 6950s so I'm only going to go for two BitForce Jalapeno's to get started, just not sure when to purchase. Like if I buy it all the software is on there I don't need to put some random OS on it? |

yes it is my understanding all the software needed is included.
I used to mine with 4 x 5850's a year ago, but stopped sold all my hardware and stopped following bitcoin, only recently started to follow it again.

The only problem with ASIC right now to my knowledge is BFL's questionable shipment reputation and questionable profitability for first miners due to overselling. This is why I am going to wait and see.

ASIC power will make GPU and even FPGA from past due to low power consumption and really high hash rate , but ASIC investment will be only for mining there is no other use for the equipment not like the case with GPU

so what about if your not paying for electricity? I live in an apartment with a fixed electricity usage every month so no matter how much i use the bill is the same... In my case I believe GPU mining will be more profitable.

If you already own the equipment and are not paying electricity, then yea. Otherwise the cost of GPU per MH vs the cost of ASIC per MH is extreme. |
If you're not excited by the idea of being an early adopter 'now', then you should come back in three or four years and either tell us "Told you it'd never work!" or join what should, by then, be a much more stable and easier-to-use system.

Definitely keep your GPU miners around if you don't pay electricity or your electricity is really low. I'm going to order some Jalapenos soon, because I want to stay in the mining game. Hopefully I can upgrade to some of the heavier stuff later on.

I'm holding out to see if BFL offers a PayPal option on the preorder. Given the lengths that some people have gone to to get refunds (i.e. posting on the BCT forums and hoping BF Labs will respond) I don't want to rely on their goodwill alone to get my money back if I need to.
