[POLL] Should ShadowCash Change its Name?

The subject of the name came up today and I wanted to get an idea of what other people think about it. I personally find it a bit grim. How do you feel about the current name? Can you think of a better one? And, all other factors aside, do you think that another name would improve its chances of long-term success (or is the name just not that important)?

One of the first things i said in the SDC thread when i discovered it was the name was not real good, i like shadowcash a lot more the shadowcoin but i just can't see shadowcash on a billboard etc i have one idea.

I like the name Shadow. Not as keen on the "Cash" part, altho it explains the usage. I guess if I heard a better name I could be swayed. Really cant imagine what that could be tho. hard to vote yes before hearing something better.

I think the currency aspect should be broken into SA (Shadow Assets) and AST (Anonymous Shadow Tokens). Or something similar.

I just don't really like coin/cash names.

I think the name is decent.  One possible issue is the aspect of the two units. There are 2 units, one is SDC and the other is Shadow as we call them now.  This could be confusing because SDC (ShadowCash/ShadowCoin) also has Shadow in the name, along with "Shadow" the anonymous tokens.  One suggestion I have thought of would be to switch from the name "Shadow" for the anonymous token to the name "Shade" instead. Like "hey yo, send me 50 Shade...Ok 50 Shade sent".  That kind of thing.

Depends on what new name you're going to chose. If new name sounds better, it is a good idea. If it sounds worse than original, it is a bad idea.

Sensible approach would be to build up a list of few names and arrange a poll to see if new names make sense to people.

Since this coin has encrypted messaging and will have an in wallet store/market, voice and file uploads and who knows what else in the future, we are less a coin and more a network. The Shadow network. The "cash" is only one part.

If we rename to Shadow we express the broader scope of this coin/network.

(Kinda like when "Apple Computer" changed its name simply to "Apple")

so… shadowcash, shadowsend, shadowchat, shdowbay, shadowvoice etc etc all fall under the purview of Shadow, an elegant and simple to market brand.

I'm considering setting up an anonymous fax service using Shadow. But I have no idea what I could call it!

What you've described is pretty much what we've got going at the moment. The currency just gets emphasized because it's the main element (at least for now).

As it stands there's 11 for, 8 against - doesn't seem to be strong feelings either way so looks like Shadow we'll stay. Another one I kinda like is the one that Pline suggested above: Shades. What're now SDC could be Lytes and the anon tokens could be Shades. Maybe next time.

We still need better naming for the anon and  non-anon tokens (sdc and shadow is a little confusing since the currency is also called sdc) as wheatclove points out above:

Maybe it is only a question of emphasising the term Shadow and and deprecating the term shadowcash (except perhaps as used to describe the currency part of the network, i dunno)

I don't really think the overall name should change, but just maybe the name of the 2 different units could be improved, so I voted no.  I like Shadow as the overall project name.  I also like "shade" as one possible alternative to "shadow tokens".  I like Shade without the "s" on the end, I think it sounds better.  I don't really like "lytes" or "lyte" that much for SDC, but its not bad.  But it may get confusing for people. Also it could be confused with litecoin and stuff.

One other suggestion I thought of would be "show".  Like send from "show" to "shadow", or send from "show" to "shade".  Or something like that.  The similarity between the letters in show and shadow would be an interesting play on words.  But I am not final on this either, just bouncing some suggestions around.  We could keep it as ShadowCoins, and use "shade" as substitue for "shadow tokens" and that might be good too.

Edit:  Or also from "shine" to "shadow" is another suggestion.

Hello everybody,

It’s good to see you all so actively supporting Shadow and staying positive as we work towards the release of our decentralized market. As some of you may have noticed, we’ve been a bit quiet on these forums lately when it comes to actively reaching out to all of you with development updates. This doesn’t mean we’ve been sitting still though, because we have a fun week ahead of us. We'll come back to that later.

First of all we are very happy to announce that both Tecnovert and I will be working full-time on Shadow from now on! We're setting our main jobs aside for the upcoming months so that we can really focus on the job at hand. This will obviously result in quicker progress when it comes to releasing new features. Going forward we are also going to post a lot more in terms of development reports. Our team has been working with Shadow community members who are setting up a new website with a development blog to keep you all up to date. So expect regular updates from now on - this one being the first.

The weeks ahead of us are all about ShadowMarket so we are pleased to announce that we have started integrating it into Shadowcore’s back end. We're currently switching from scrypt to SHA-256 so that staking requires less cpu cycles, updating to PoS v2 to improve network stability and working on BIP32 and BIP44 support so that we can support hierarchical / tree categories for the market. Once we are finished with these enhancements, things should start moving significantly faster. We will be making radical changes to the Secure Messaging (ShadowChat), to support Pub/Sub messages, so that people could subscribe to certain categories for the market, where we will then move towards our first round of public alpha/beta testing. We’ve noticed there are lots of questions about how ShadowMarket will work so we have begun gathering them and will answer them in an overview later this week. So much about the upcoming Shadowmarket for now.

We are all still waiting for Isidor Zeuner’s review of our ShadowSend anonymity system in comparison to other anonymous cryptocurrencies. It is still ongoing and we are currently writing more documentation, which is currently our weakest point. We’ve been in contact with Isidor and are trying to give him a helping hand where needed. Please note that it’s quite a task seeing as he will not only study our system but also compare it to the alternatives out there.

As said earlier, we have a fun week ahead of us. We will try to give more specific details on that later this week.
