I run them sitting on their pretty FACE. The FACE being the only surface which has neither vents nor connectors. Makes it kind of hard to see the "throttling LED", though. One can still see the throttling LED when peeking through the vents.

I have seen discussions about less efficient heatpipes on GPUs when on the side, sorry cant find the thread now.

Reminds me of rocket stove principles. Would be interesting to see how one could exploit the effects of convection further in cooling systems that use pipes. Maybe, within the computer case have the heated coolant (or heat sink) wrapped about a central metallic chimney discharging the heat vertically above the chassis. Like in a rocket stove, the heat would cause the gases to rise in the tube(chimney), creating a low pressure at the bottom of it which can suck cooler outside air into the case. Preferrably across other hot components. BUT I'm not sure how much that would help, other than maybe reducing the need for a fan or two. And it might take up more space...not sure. If you had a rack of chassis, then you might have a problem...unless you could mate the vertical tubing somehow.
Any thoughts?

I had 10 singles and ran them all on their sides with 6 on the top shelf, and 4 on the bottom with the power supply. I figured instead of blowing the hot air up, the a/c's airflow was coming in from the left, so they'd blow the hot air out to the right.
I've since sold five, and I am reorganizing the room they were in, so the airflow is all different. I just left 5 on the top shelf, all on their sides. Maybe I'll flip em over and see if that makes a difference.

why did you sell them ?? honesty, i must say, that ztex quads, are much better in hot enviroment. BFL throtles a lot, and quads just crunch ot mode on Any1 can help me with running sinles on W7 ? I`m happy xubuntu user now, running them fine with cgminer. I`d like to move them into windows, and use Easy tuner(or smth like that) Main problem is, system sees sommethink connected to the USB, but cant use it ot mode off

The link might be found from easyminer or from bfl website.

I just gave this a try and it caused mine with 880 firmware to go from 52 degrees C to 48.5 degrees C. Seems to work better for airflow with the single sitting face down (the side with the light)

On a wire rack/shelf, I had several of them running with the main fan side pointing up. However, a couple of them started rattling internally because of the fan. So, those two were put on their sides, and the rattling stopped. There are no observed negative effects on operation, yet. Any cooling changes were not noted. ||bit

I just set mine back up again (the usb positioning/hub is pretty critical, one of my units was having issues. just reran the cords so the power goes to one side, the usb to the other, and plugged them in so they are showing up on the same usb controller), going to let them run for a while and take their temps after 24 hours. Then I'll try this and see if it helps me as well.

Did someone recently report a problematic Single that throttles and than goes off line. Now that the summer heat is here, I am too having this problem, it will throttle for a while, then CGminer will stop working with it completely, requiring the CGminer to be restarted.
