Oh my gosh! I started with the whole bitcoin wallet thing 2 days ago. It has taken nearly 48 hours for the blocks to sync with the network. I purchased my first bitcoins in the meantime, but won't know if they got to my chosen address until the blocks finish loading? Is that how it goes? Does it normally take this long? I do have a high speed connection. What gives? Thanks in advance! Smiley

Hey boogerbrain,
Im in the same boat, i wish i read more about this before starting.
I had up to about 60% done, then turned my laptop off, and it started from 0% again WTF?
Ive had it going near 36 hours now and up to 77%. Im also wondering if once it is synchronised,
will it stay that way, so upon turnung on/off, it will ready to use?
It may seem like a stupid question to some, but we have to start learning somewhere,
thanx for the patience, & any answers.
ALso, is there a wiki or FAQ somewhere for noobs like us?

Really? A link to the wiki as a whole?

To the OP: it's normal but unfortunate that with the normal client, downloading the blockchain takes quite a while, and may need restarts. It's at something like 1 and a half gigs at the moment, and growing. There are light clients (electrum, multibit) that don't need to download the whole blockchain, and there are online wallets (e.g. blockchain.info) that will allow you to get going right away. If you have a computer you can leave on all the time and with space I'd recommend using the standard client, but I'd consider using one of the ones I've mentioned or a similar one if you have to come online and offline frequently.

I'm selling great Minion Games like The Manhattan Project, Kingdom of Solomon and Venture Forth at 4% off retail starting June 2012. PM me or go to my thread in the Marketplace if you're interested.

For Settlers/Dominion/Carcassone etc., I do email gift cards on Amazon for a 5% fee. PM if you're interested.

Thanks!
One more question: Can I take the address to which I had bitcoin sent to an other wallet, if I should download a different one? Thanks!

Thanx for the wiki link, very helpful.
The lite clients, or the online wallets can be used
in conjunction withh this one that is currently syncing?
