Well it's essentially leeching or piggybacking traffic. You could argue it's almost like plagiarism or stealing someone else's work. Deleting posts also has valid uses but it becomes useless and defeats the purpose if sites like this exist.

Why would we want to? Such websites make it more difficult to scam via changing and deleting posts

Because they take new users and revenue from this forum. And there is the opportunity that scams could essentially be run on a clone of btc. The site administrators could pretend to be 'badbear', who has 1000s of posts, plenty of trust and is an admin - just not on that site.

Edit: Just to be clear, I think its questionable for site 'mirror's to be used in order to generate post history and then make money off it. Those sites should be shells and there should be no way for users to interact with those sites. Ideally, edit history would be added to bct itself. All other uses for clones are not a good thing.

Yea there are valid reasons to delete posts however if there is any kind of dispute then being able to see previously deleted posts can help without getting an admin involved (which they generally don't like to be).

I don't think these sites generate much traffic other then from people finding deleted posts or using search features that we don't have here ect without original content they won't get a lot of traffic

theymos could take it further if he wanted too, unless he's given permission prior to the site going up. If the operator of a mirror hasn’t got permission they are breaching copyright laws. Although, I see mirrors as being a good thing, when this forum goes down either for maintenance or of an attack. The mirror could resort back to another backup whilst work is being done on this forum. Therefore, people can still read information whilst the main forum is down.

In the only places these clones get visibility is when they're in direct competition with bitcointalk. Imagine a new user ending up on one of these fragment sites and wondering why nothing works.... he's going to nope the fuck out of the ecosystem and not come back.

Several reasons,
1 they 'steal traffic' from this forum. (not my concern)
2 who knows if they're run by someone trusted (look at what dogie posted)
3 sometimes content NEEDS to be deleted.
4 almost all content posted here is original and 'leeching' websites never ask for permission to do what they do
5 it makes everyone less confident with what they post, since they know it'll be extremely hard for them to remove it from the internet after it's posted (this goes both ways)

3.1 Can you imagine your dox being posted here, and mirrored by 2-3 other websites too? Your personal info could be exposed online forever and you'd maybe have to mail the admin of a website in order to get it down.

Maybe more could be named.

But if they don't modify the posts then they only get a lil money from the trafic that missleaded users users do by clicking on it. They don't do any more harm, do they?

You could accidentally post your own dox or something that could identify you (wallet addresses or other such personal information).

There are mirror forums for quite a few other popular communities, usually search engines show them low on results due to the duplicate content, it's not that big of a deal and trying to stop people from scrapping websites just opens a can of worms so don't go there.

I don't see the problem with these sites. They might steal some traffic, not a lot, but they do provide some kind of an archive for things. I think it's kinda pointless to try and stop them.

If your doc is posted here then chances are that it won't be taken down

Not a problem in my opinion, backups are always useful and if the site crashes for a while at least there was a mirror except for drafts in the last crash, etc.

Anyways we will move to new forum software sooner or later and there will need to be new mirrors created, it isn't too uncommon to have mirrors of popular sites as feng mentioned.

(As dogie mentioned)
Be cautious when trying out mirrors I guess and make it obvious which one is the real forum lol.

I DMCA-noticed one of those sites and got them to remove my post ripped from bitcointalk. I was hoping they wouldn't respond so then I could send the takedown to their ISP.

Everything I write and submit here is copyright ME and I have provided bitcointalk exclusive license to its contents.

I DMCA-noticed one of those sites and got them to remove my post ripped from bitcointalk. I was hoping they wouldn't respond so then I could send the takedown to their ISP.

Everything I write and submit here is copyright ME and I have provided bitcointalk exclusive license to its contents.

I'd like to see you DMCA: Google (cache), archive.today, archive.org, and countless other services.

It's the internet once it's posted it's out there for good, no going back.
