Guys, I have to do a paper on the title- Is bitcoin a viable alternative to money as we know it....and if not, could it be one in the future.

Basically, I need to know what bitcoin is, how it works, how it is similar/different to normal money, how it affects the economy of a country and what are its future prospects.

Any help will be greatly appreciated...I dont mind if you send me a link where I can read up on the topic.

Thanks for the help.

Is bitcoin a viable alternative to money as we know it....and if not, could it be one in the future.

bitcoin isn't a viable alternative to money as it already is a form of money.

bitcoin isn't a viable alternative to state issued legal tender /fiat as it subverts some of the intrinsic qualities that states love about controlling their currency(I.E... the ability to steal from you without actually knowing you or visiting you through inflation and the ability to track and control your behaviors and punish you when you misbehave.)

Don't expect Bitcoin to replace Fiat anytime soon, expect states to remain ambiguously or aggressively antagonistic to it as they hate competition.

Money to Everyone? I don't think it's viable right now anywhere around the world except for maybe in a few more tech-savvy areas.

You would be surprised by how many 1-2 usd per hour field workers own a 600 dollar smart phone in many "3rd world" countries. The main reason they aren't using bitcoin more is because they don't know it exists and not many merchants accept it.

Well you can just google or search google for similar topics on bitcointalk and reddit. I am sure there is a ton of information out there accessible, by just one google search.

Yes of course it is. It's already a great way to pass value over the internet quickly and cheap. Although it's not "mainstream" by any stretch of the imagination, many people already use it as a form of money successfully. The value is there, it just needs more education and visibility. Besides reading up and looking at the various links the others have posted, I'd highly recommend that you take 2 hours of your day to listening and absorbing what our best spoken Bitcoin ambassador, Andreas Antonopolous has to say:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUNGFZDO8mM

If you want to get converted to BTC and write your paper in a way convincingly, ignore the Eddie Munster hairline, and listen to the words he's saying.

The US Federal Reserve has written a few papers on what you're researching. Google "Fed reports on Bitcoin" and they should come up. Also, the Fed will serve as a very reputable source for your paper (professors like reputable sources.)

Happy reading and if you can, share your paper with all of us once you're finished!

Definitely just give Bitcoin a try. Receive some. Send some. Play around. You should have a pretty good idea based on experience if it is viable as an alternative or not. You could then go into technical detail as needed.

The main difference with "normal" money is that its supply is predetermined by mathematics rather than legislators, and it's unregulated.
