I'm sorry if I come across as rude, but this forum needs to make the important changes/additions now. While you're reading this remember that this forum is pretty much the only one that represents bitcoin.

It has been over a year without avatars (ok, not too much of a setback). However, things we need like 2 factor authentication or at the very least email verification doesn't even exist. The talks of a new forum is starting to get old, we're so in the dark that 99% of users here have no clue what is going to happen and when. A new captcha service needs to be put in place to prevent those bots signing up thousands of accounts as has been seen in the past few days.

Newbie jail needs to come back. I know, theymos, it does give you more ad views but come on, it is not worth it for us (the number of annoying and worthless loan requests, the bots, the overall lower quality coming from brand new users).

Please make the changes that we require, or at least pass on (or share) this power to do so onto another, preferably capable, person.

Soon has been said for the past 6 months. I seriously won't be surprised if (when) the new forum doesn't come out in early 2015 (as was said to be the release date). When it comes out, I can only imagine all the new problems that will come with it (I seriously hope not but disappointment after disappointment after delay after downtime leads to a cynical way of thinking.)

I heard it was very soon for the last year. I would have thought someone would have given me a poke to test guide formatting if it was ready by now.

The Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules, guidelines, FAQ is not sticky in meta, it is burried on the second or third page most of the time.

Maybe you as a staff member can make it sticky, but I think theymos has a reason, why it is not sticky yet.

Oh yeah, you are right. I thought it was sticked, dangit. I'll have to ask theymos to make it sticky.

we need like 2 factor authentication
I made a 2FA mod for this forum, but still waiting for other people to check my code: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=364307.msg7733979#msg7733979 If anyone can check it out, would be appreciated ! And perhaps we would have 2FA soon then.

I really couldn't agree more with you marcotheminer , It would be nice to be able to connect using Social media such as Twitter , Google+ and an email verification won't hurt anyone too that should prevent some BOTS from spamming (only famous email providers should be used like outlook , gmail , hotmail , yahoo etc... )
Also captcha's as you said ... I mean captcha's are really so useful and the forum can even earn money from it since we have thousands of people connecting everyday here
For the new forum software we was waiting for a Beta release in December and nothing really happened so I'am pretty sure that the Final release won't be in February also last time I asked the developper he said that the release beta is very soon , probably in some weeks who knows . I just hope we won't be dissapointed
If nothing of what you said gets added to the Beta , you should move this thread to new software forum Wink

If a new forum does come about, then would it have all the accounts transferred or will have people start all over ?

I think all the DB will  be transferred in the new forum.

Everything will be transferred over.

This forum it meant for discussion about Bitcoin, why does not having a avatar affect that? 2 factor would be nice, but the new forum is on it's way. I don't think you realise how much work needs to be done on building new software & designing it. I would rather wait a few years than having a shit attempt of making the forum. I'm not 100% sure why email verification is necessary, I can't remember if it's in the new forum but, it really isn't a big deal if we have it. If we bring back newbie jail I believe that's just limiting the real posters and when the newbie jail was active it just lead to spam just so people could get out, no the spam wasn't everywhere. But, it was concentrated in the newbie & help section, which believe it or not people do ask some quality questions from time to time.

You can go look at the repo to see the progress being made, there's changes everyday. There's also been a preview over in "New forum software" which has now changed.

It's not that the bots are too much of a big deal either they get dealt with within an hour of reporting.

If we didn't have 2-factor coming email verification would be the next best thing, but hopefully we don't even need to use an email address with the new forum for those that don't want to provide one.

It would probably be best if you kept your account safe (along with your private keys). 2FA is difficult to implement in SMF (according to theymos) and it would not do much anyway as many people would not use it.

avatars were used to hack the forum. I would rather not have an avatar then have one more potential security risk.

There has been a lot of talk of the new forum being released "soon" however the time frame has always been early 2015.

Newbie jail is almost certainly not going to come back

The problem lies in the word 'soon'. What soon means for a company for example: http://www.wowwiki.com/Soon.
Where time isn't defined, soon can be a long time. After February 2015.. we could wait till 2016, since that is also 'after'.
With the growing amount of hacks in the Bitcoin world, and no real way of getting your account back (only by contacting Theymos which often doesn't have a positive result), the users are at risk.

I'd say any account worth stealing would likely use 2fa.

There's zero incentive for theymos&co to actually have a deadline for this forum.
They can set their own timeline and change it any time they want to, one month or 5 years from now.

In the meantime, maybe something like lighthouse can setup/fund 'the' bitcoinforum.
