I saw a link to this yesterday. http://www.reddit.com/r/relationships/comments/2uovrl/me_28_f_with_my_husband_31_m_5_years_will_not/It's a reddit post by a woman upset because her husband's too into bitcoin. He's probably on the forum (anyone want to out themselves?) so I thought maybe some members might have some useful advice for him. Here's my take: Dude, I know you think when the price goes back up she's going to be all "you were so right and I was so wrong." She'll never do that. She'll be even madder than she is now. Let's face it, you're probably getting divorced. Whether you are or not here's what's best to do: put a plan in motion to make it appear you've lost or sold all your bitcoins, tell her she's right and was right all along and that you were a real idiot not to believe in the stock market like her really supersmart brother. Why? Because your main goal now should be to protect your bitcoins from this crazy bitch. If she knows you have bitcoins then she's going to force them to be liquidated in the divorce settlement. If you want to keep up with the bitcoin forum and reddit, you still can, but it has to be for the apparent purpose of making fun of it. Like "look at this, honey, you were totally right, like all the time. Because you're supersmart. And your ass totally isn't fat." You can even still watch Brave the World videos. Just tell your wife that she's much prettier. After all, she believes USD is real money and bitcoin is a cult, so she's dumb enough to believe anything. TLDR: Hide your bitcoins and make it appear you lost/sold them. Don't trust your wife.

I don't believe that reddit post for a second (too much blatant trolling), but I'll comment anyway.
Financial decisions in a marriage should be something that is openly discussed and agreed upon by both participants. If one of the individuals is making decisions on their own, that's a breach of trust and once trust is gone I see no future for the relationship.
This really isn't about Bitcoin.
Post's already locked.

I think the story sounds legit. I rode the passionate bitcoin bull train before and I never let it get to that extreme, but I'm sure I talked about it to my wife at dinner a lot. The only difference was I making a shit ton off it. She loved that fact, but I could tell after a certain point she didn't feel like hearing about it much anymore. So I just changed changed the topic to what vacations we were going to take!
Dude needs to man up and realize he's gone overboard and put his wife first, she sounds like she's fairly intelligent.

Agreed. If anything this is a cautionary tale about joint financial accounts. When she first caught a whiff of what was going on, she should have extricated herself from the situation. But hey, at least it wasn't Paycoin. I don't believe that reddit post for a second (too much blatant trolling), but I'll comment anyway.

It sounds like the guy doesn't have a job anymore, and this is how he's feeling purpose and validation in his life. I think the story sounds legit. Well, first I gotta say I don't believe that story to be true. I think it's a buttcoiner's joke or prank, whatever. But I have to say that this sounds really sexist. Why is everyone continuing to differentiate between men and women that much. And then calling her names... Well, I think this is the proof we're still far away form mass adoption. If women aren't on board, a technology or invention is useless.

It's no secret women are less interested in technology than men. The story can be true, I don't see why not, every time we discover something new and exciting we talk about it to everyone we know, and more compulsive obsessive personalities can lead to unhealthy amounts of time spent studying it or even spending too much money on it...

The story seems to be a bit far fetched if you ask me. Also, there appears to be obvious trolling in the post to top it off. This leads me to the conclusion that this post is partially fake.

I think my advice would be to sell between 1/3 to 1/4 to replace the FIAT taken from savings.
While his would be at a loss, the woman complaining in the reddit post clearly sees it as a very speculative investment (at best). You would then negotiate an allowance to do "dollar cost averaging".
Oh and try to diversify your interests a bit. People tire of hearing about Bitcoin. (Ask me how I know.)

Are they? How do you know that? I know enough women who are highly successful in the STEM fields. The only thing they complain about is men who treat them as if they were stupid or not as good, just because they don't have a Y-chromosome. And, as a man, I gotta say I'm quite fed up by this, as well. This stupid cycle just needs to be broken at some point.

I'll repeat what I said on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2uiyb3/you_want_to_see_mainstream_adoption_get_more/coakzc9Bitcoin's effect on gender relationships is going to be very interesting.
In certain parts of the developing world, it's going to give women the ability to gain far greater degree of financial independence from their husbands and fathers than they currently enjoy.
In the developed world, it's going to give men the ability to gain far greater financial independence from their (ex-)wives than they currently enjoy.
Once the men in the developing countries and the women in the developed countries figure this out, then the anti-Bitcoin hate machine will really kick into high gear.

A number of people in this forum could do themselves some good by reading through that reddit thread. This isn't to say that Bitcoin can't turn out to be a worthwhile investment in the long run, but simply that some people don't *truly* understand for themselves what it means to not buy in more than they can afford to lose, especially on something so volatile.

People are quite inexperienced it seems in this space. I have sort of watched finance, and I have seen some people (mostly friends who were gambling in the markets) lose EVERYTHING! Oh man. It was not pretty, especially when they were married. Let this be a lesson to the younger ones. Be conservative financially. Save like it were the Depression. and work hard. Bitcoin is something that should be supplemental. No more also than 10% of savings. NO MORE than that. Unless you are risky or fine cashwise.
