Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

Anonymous debit card? It seems that they are a few vendors around here that propose this service

This plan has a crap load of holes in it.

Trade on #bitcoin-otc and request for cash in the mail.

Or you could find a p2p meeting place and exchange at the local mall or coffee shop or some dark alley.

Buy something with bitcoins that you can easily sell (such as a GPU) and then sell it for fiat.

or gold from coinabul. Any coin or pawn shop will take them at spot.

We are working really hard with localbitcoins.com, which aims to be best site for buying and selling bitcoins with cash, locally.

Just today we updated the site, now we have an escrow feature with SMS notification, worldwide. This makes the whole process easier:

1. buyer puts the amount he wants to buy, bitcoin address and phone number for sms notification, gets secret escrow code
2. buyer and seller meet at internet cafe, only seller has internet
3. buyer gives cash to seller
4. seller releases escrow via internet
5. buyer gets escrow release confirmation with SMS, with secret escrow code

We are working with the site full time. Next we are going to develop a feature, which allows releasing the escrow with SMS, which enables bitcoin cash transactions without internet access (both buyer and seller need only SMS-enabled phone).

All feedback welcome!

All feedback welcome!

Even the Internet cafe may be not really needed: you might use localization apps like google latitude to find and be found.

5. buyer gets escrow release confirmation with SMS, with secret escrow code

Whats to stop the seller from forging the escrow SMS? That's very easy to do.

The secret escrow code. The seller can't know this, unless the buyer tells it to the seller. The code is always in the SMS.

I really like this and am really glad to see some serious time and energy put into localizing exchanges.  I feel that its only going to get increasingly difficult to run an online bitcoin exchange.

To be honest, I think this is the killer app which Bitcoin lacks - many methods for cashing out Bitcoins are just too damned slow at the moment.

All I can say is that this is Bitcoin. I don't believe it until I see six confirmations.

localbitcoins.com sounds like a great idea, but SMS is not really suitable for someone requiring anonimity?
Ditch SMS and use a web-based smartphone app instead. That'll at least keep things anonymous until the legal eagles make you keep personally-identifiable records of all transactions...

At least where I live it is very easy to get anonymous pre-paid SIM card for phones. Also teh SMS stuff isn't required, it is just made to make the whole process easier. You don't have to use it. You can just rely on emails.
