it all depends on how many inputs you have!
What wallet are you using?

10,000 satoshis if you want fast confirmation, 1,000 if you don't mind to wait a few hours.

Depends on the wallet you're using. For example, in MultiBit, the fee is automatically added, so you would enter 4 BTC, and 4.0001 would be sent.

An economy based on endless growth is unsustainable.

Bitcoin QT look how many inputs you have for the 4BTC you want to send, if you have only 1 input then 0.0001 is ok ... if have something like 12 inputs then you should go with 0.0008 although I'm afraid that with 0.0008 and 12 inputs your transaction will be medium priority also take a look here https://blockchain.info/tx/4dd869bcd2db2becbfe0a7435d12afcc67fe13a5c5c9e3c955c5fa97aa630ee2there are 7 inputs and the fee was just 0.0001 and it was medium priority here https://blockchain.info/tx/342aa340ce7b6776222b51dba18fc7d756d262c02abf029bba2410a8e98a5d3dare more then 12 inputs and the size is 5405 (bytes) and the fee was 0.0008 BTC and it was processed within 6 blocks witch is medium priority as all this have been said I would recommend you to pay what fee you want ... I pay higher fees because I like BTC and I like to encourage the miners ... as my dream is to transfer some BTC from one address to another and pay 30BTC in fees .... with only 1 BTC transferred so everyone will talk about me But since I don't have 31 BTC I will wait Also ignore the people who say pay 0.01 fee for instant transaction because this don't happen! Why? Because if they will find the block in 40 minutes you can pay 25BTC and you will still have to wait

You just input 4 btc, Bitcoin QT will calculate it for you. The default value (one or few inputs) should be 0.0001. But if your 4 btc is distributed in many addresses, the fee will be somewhat higher.

Under preferences, you'll want to make sure that you have set a reasonable transaction fee. I suggest 0.0001 BTC per kilobyte: Under the "Send" section, enter the address that you want to send to and the amount that you want to send: If the sum of the amount that you are sending plus the fee will be more than your total wallet balance, then you will receive an error message and the transaction won't be sent: If the sum of the amount that you are sending plus the fee will be less than or equal to your total wallet balance, then you will receive a verification message: If the fee is more than you are willing to pay, you can click "Cancel" and the transaction won't be sent. If you want to send the transaction, click "Yes"

Is this the first time you're sending bitcoin? How did you became a Sr. Member without even knowing that? Above replies have explained a lot about how much fee you're suppose to send, just don't make the mistake of sending 0.0001 with 4 btc fee, I have seen some people do that. Just double check everything before hitting send.

He could just be someone who only saves(Unlikely but possible).

The fee might be higher. E.g. see Dannys post, the fee calculated by core/qt was 0.0002. In my experience core/qt does a very good job calculating the fee.

20.000 gives you pretty instant send (depends on block) 10k usually does the job too for anything > 0.01

Yes but it doesn't show the tx fee amount when pushing the TX, right? I haven't used it for long time. how can a senior member not know how to send 4 btc? its as simple as pressing send , the wallet will calculate the rest.

It depends where you're keeping your BTC. For example, if you were to send the 4 BTC from your Coinbase account, you wouldn't get charged anything. The normal network fee is 0.0001 BTC but if you're sending from exchanges you gonna pay more, usually between 0.0002 - 0.0005.

Coinbase charges 0.0002 BTC when I used. Did they cut down the fees? I haven't used them for sending TX with larger inputs - fee may increase when sending such TX. -MZ
