I have been reading about bitcoin for quite a bit and see there is a need for people to host a masternode or core. Since I bought btc I figure I could possible run one of these nodes to support a system I'm a part of now. The problem is I am not a programmer so I would need something reasonably simple. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction so I can do my part to facilitate the growth of this coin. One other thing. If I host this node are the coins I own at risk of being stolen for some reason? Thanks and I look forward to helping

a Simillar thread to yours here : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=955415.0Basically (looking at the answers) , all you need to do is run your Bitcoin Core (Blockchain file should be downloaded and wallet Synchroznied with the network) and open port 8333 TCP , and that's it . and no , there is no risk for your Coins to be stolen as far as I know ~ Madness

Blockchain file is about 31GB as far as I know , and it's not a small size as before (the second link you posted says he bought Cloud server with 20 GB ) which is not enough if he wants to run one now . So basically you should consider buying something with 40GB + ~ Madness

However I told 20-40 gb (see the bold part) but you are right the bitcoin blockchain is more than 30 Gb (at the moment).

I can confirm that the 0.10 update consumes less resources and it's less bloaty on the system.

Well, I've downloaded the bitcoin client, updated it and now it's running. But, when I select Help-debug-Peers, I see 7 outgoing and 1 incoming clients. And, when I check my client using this address https://getaddr.bitnodes.io/ I see the following message: 172.12.117.167:8333 is unreachable I see this even when all firewalls are turned off If someone has suggestions I'm listening

Ok I'm not a tech guy and I've figured this out by trial and error and a bit of research. My machine has plenty of resources to run the core - 1tb HD 16g ram. I'm just concerned that after loading this core (it's running), I'm not helping, as there are only 7 outgoing connections and 1 incoming.
And, I've taken the step to use a resource that can apparently recognize if my machine is reachable which it turns out it's not. This, despite the information I've provided regarding outgoing/incoming connections on my client. I"m confused. Am I helping or accomplishing nothing.
Thx
