Rumor has it that there's at least one new alt that'll embrace the PoR algo for its coming release. They're already hinting at what demographics may be interested in their coinage by including an image on their website:

If one's hashing fast enough via PoR, would they be able to switch protocols and gain a ring?

Too fast and the likelyhood of encountering an orphan ring are higher. Sochi would be an example:
