Anyone know?
Your sig image is broken anyway. I doubt you can change your avatar without removing it.

I am aware, it is a Steam issue related to the fact that I have an extended character in my profile name. If I remove it it restores its normal operations. Also, telling me you doubt it is not very helpful - clearly I already doubt it, why else would I make this thread?

By "I doubt it" I actually mean "Yes probably so but I can't be arsed to try it."

If it helps, the avatar and sig settings are on the same page and must be saved all at the same time.
