Bitcoin revolution could be the next internet, says Bank of England

The arrival of electronic currencies could revolutionise the way Britons pay for goods and services, in much the same way as the internet shook up how we access information, the Bank of England has said.
Cashless forms of payment like the cryptocurrency Bitcoin “potentially combined with mobile technology, may reshape the mechanisms for making secure payments”, the central bank said.

Oh, a tweet from George Osborne as well...

Things may be cooking up for bitcoin, with recent news of bitcoin foundation hiring professional PR firm to educate about bitcoin worldwide, and now this.
Is this a new turning point to mark bottom value? i sure hope so.
"may reshape the mechanisms for making secure payments”, - not realy convinced about this statement tho  Roll Eyes

While they might be fans of the underlying technology, they'll only end up making another currency they can print into oblivion if they do try to create their own alt.  Canada failed to get MintChip off the ground in any meaningful way, so we'll see if BoE's attempt will prove any more fruitful.  I'm guessing we've got at least a decade to wait before anything starts to materialise, though.   Grin

The Bank said that it could investigate whether moving to digital currencies could threaten traditional banking models, as consumers moved towards holding electronic money themselves, rather than depositing it with high street lenders.

That should be the least of the worries of banks.  Smiley

About time they sorted out the banks over here.  Not a single exchange can run a business without getting hassle from the banks.

True enough of any system where one group has a lot of power
Banking being diversified again helps to ensure competition and growth so its a trend to look forward to in the future

Bitcoin revolution could be the next internet, says Bank of England

I think this is a valid comparison. I really think bitcoin could or at least has the potential be as revolutionary as the internet was but sadly I think it will take longer to get established than the net did, though tech moves fast these days. I wonder how long it will in fact take (if ever) for the masses to get on board?

What I want to know is what is he doing for bitcoin since he's so interested in new tech?
