VeraCrypt is a fork of TrueCrypt. It's essentially TrueCrypt 8.0.
I still don't see a problem with TrueCrypt. The devs suddenly dropped it with no real reason. A security audit was performed and no security issues have been found.
Only phase 1 was completed and it was a success but phase 2 is still needed
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2887052/truecrypt-audit-back-on-track-after-silence-and-uncertainty.htmlthere is speculation that the devs were approached by an agency and rather than help they dropped the project.
The no comment is pretty much the canary in the mine though. If it was anything else I'm sure they would
have spoken more openly on why they stopped.
There were rumors that an agency has backdoored the 7.*version again just rumors and everyone just says
be vigilant. I'm sticking with my older version of True Crypt for now though.
example ubuntu privacy team found no issues with 7.0a in their audit
