I think it shows that the particular user has some kind of trust in the community and it can be used to launch or promote businesses on reddit.

You're absolutely right. That's why people almost always want Reddit accounts which has big a amount of karma points.

Between myself and a buddy we have 4 accounts with 50k+ karma, are people actually paying money for stuff like that?
