One year later, we're no closer to finding MtGox's missing millions worth of bitcoins

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2892892/one-year-later-were-no-closer-to-finding-mtgoxs-missing-millions.html

Few people marked the recent anniversary of one of the biggest catastrophes to hit bitcoin—the day MtGox went bust.

Once the world’s biggest market for the digital currency, the Tokyo-based exchange collapsed on Feb. 28, 2014 with liabilities of some ¥6.5 billion ($63.6 million). It said it was unable to account for some 850,000 bitcoins, worth nearly half a billion dollars at the time. It was a staggering sum, possibly purloined by hackers who exploited a bug in the bitcoin system, according to the company.

It's been a year already time passes by in Bitcoin
Also I guess there is an anniversary date considering how long Gox was in limbo it was hard to pin down just one day.

As for Karpeles, he lost another company to bankruptcy in January—this time MtGox parent firm Tibanne. Following a dispute with Kobayashi about money that Tibanne had apparently borrowed from the bitcoin exchange, the Tokyo District Court approved bankruptcy proceedings for Tibanne, a small Web hosting and services provider.

Did not know of the parent firm learnt something today

So the search continues after one year have passed for those missing bitcoins. I wonder when will they be finally found or will it really happen? Those hackers might be trading and cashing them already in a year or so.

By now I would presume a good portion of the coins have been liquidated in the markets one place or another
Mixed etc.
Not sure if they were traced this long through blockchain analysis but it does leave the question of what did happen to them in the end.

A year is nothing for bitcoin, probably just like how a year is nothing in terms of the age of earth

so what exactly did they "lose" here?

The public addresses? The private keys? Or the coins were moved to addresses out of their control?
