You will have to excuse me but I have never seen an exchange chart, don't have a masters degree in finance and there is no legend as to how it works. I am new to this but interested in giving it a try.
It would be nice to have a tutorial on HOW TO GET STARTED WITH EXCHANGE (the complete idiots guide  Roll Eyes )

Are the red number buy and the green ones sell?

What is the purpose of the "depth chart" and what does it represent?

Just like when buying a stock on the stock market, when trading bitcoin the charts will list the bid price(buyer) and the ask price(seller).

Red numbers represent a sell; a seller met the buyers price.
Green numbers represent a buy; the buyer met the sellers price.

If you get confused or lost google your question but replace "bitcoin" with "forex" and that usually produces an answer  Wink

If you plan to hold BTC for years, then you really don't need to read the chart.

Depth chart is used to show the supply and demand at different prices.
So, depth chart for a bid/ask market has two lines, one for asking to buy orders and one for asking to sell orders.
That orders are being placed by people who exchange, but also if market is in crisis, by exchangers to protect the price.
