I remember years ago someone telling me authorities looked at your power bill to try and find people growing. Because of all the legitimate reasons for your power to go up I'd put it down at the time to paranoia from them smoking too many cones .

That's pretty stupid, the cops see high power usage, the first thing they'll assume "WE FOUND A MARIJUANA GROWER!", and not "Probably just some gamer with a powerful computer.", I really never thought they'd think you're growing weed just because you're using a bit too much power.

They should have used this as a plot device in Farenheight 411.
"We noticed you've had a light on for most of the night. You aren't reading books are you?" "No sir, those are grow lights. These are my hemp plants." "I heard you can make paper from that plant. We'll be keeping a close eye on you."

The Canadian town of Mission, BC has a bylaw that allows the town's Public Safety Inspection Team to search people's homes for grow ops if they are using more than 93 kWh of electricity per day. [citation needed]

This so-called "bust" is an urban legend that almost certainly didn't happen.
Someone wrote an article about a blog post about an IRC chat where someone said something that supported a rumor about the situation where a minehouse could be mistaken for a growhouse.
There's more evidence for the existence of so-called "gods" than for the existence of the raid being discussed here.

excessive electricity consumption is often an indicator of a serious safety hazard. Properties, which exceed the mandated threshold of 93 kwh/day, would be reviewed and inspected.
The PSIT inspects homes which are using more than 93 kwh/day of electricity and are observed to show signs of being a controlled substance property.
If the three-person inspection team reaches a consensus that there is no obvious reason for the property to be consuming abnormal amounts of electricity, or that the property exhibits one of the obvious signs of a controlled substance property, a notice of inspection is posted to the door of the property indicating that the PSIT will return for a home inspection in 24 hours.
24 hours later, the PSIT returns to perform a property inspection – for safety reasons, a RCMP officer is within sight distance (typically at the end of the driveway). If the resident of the property grants access to PSIT, the team performs an inspection, which typically takes between 30 to 90 minutes. If PSIT is denied access the team leaves and returns the next day with a warrant from a Justice of the Peace. If the warrant specifies, an RCMP member may accompany the PSIT inside the property for the inspection. This is not a raid
