Most of the Bitcoin community members will have heard of the Cryptolocker malware by now. For those of you who haven’t yet, Cryptolocker encrypts a ton of important files located on your computer, and forces users to pay for getting them decrypted again. This payment can be completed with either a credit card or Bitcoin, which is why it has caught the eye of mainstream media across the world. The Free University of Amsterdam is the latest victim of this nasty piece of malware.

If the payment can be made with credit card, how hard is it to track down the operator any why not charge back that payment ?!

Anyway this is a good lesson to start making backups regularly.

Or better, having an online, encrypted backup of your important stuff.

The question is... How did this spread to an University network? I take for granted that an University network is protected by several systems that scan incoming files. At least that's what I'm used to from my University years...

It's no big deal to spread. 1 infected can spread to many others.
Protection bypassed. By scan time it was undetected.
.Edu is easy to infect as there is always someone who is not aware of it. Also there is always someone who made a bug in security not knowing it.

You would think a University would have better network security to not get effected by things like this. Sad to see it happen and especially when it drags bitcoin into the light negatively.

I'm sure they have ways of moving the money safely before they're caught.
