We should make bans on accounts for spamming and whatnot limited to all but Meta section or people will keep on making new accounts to appeal their bans. This is getting to be a bit outrageous... search up banned in the members list and find, "whyamibanned, banned_user, igotbanned, banned me again" an more. I think I've proven my case.

Suppose it could be a good idea but most people don't even need to create threads in here as the answer is always the same: wait out your ban.

That may be true, but a lot of the new people that are being banned don't know or understand that answer.

IMO: It would be better to do this to save on data space.

I actually considered proposing this several months ago but never got around to it. After thinking about this for a while, I would think the likely result is that people would just make a lot of insubstantial posts with their paid signature in the meta section in order for them to continue getting paid while they are banned

Maybe code in something that doesn't make posts add to your count when your banned? :/ Even though that would interfere with logging of posts and whatnot. I'm not sure.

Maybe a warning on the ban stating complaining about it is likely futile or something to that effect should be added, though maybe allowing them to post in Meta is also an option (but does have issues like Quick just mentioned).

Well you can't code the way that other people count posts.

My proposal to have any signature automatically removed when a ban is instituted would actually solve this problem because the signature campaign manager would (hopefully) see the removed signature and would withhold payment as a result, and the incentive for someone to post a bunch of useless posts in meta would be removed

I think it would be a nice "feature" but as quickseller told , a lot of users will start to make a large quantity of posts here (in the meta section). The result at the end will be the same; maybe if it is possible to add this other thing  - if someone is banned from post & send the PM he can open only one thread here (whit the account banned) in the meta and nothing else.

Maybe a special subsection in meta for ban appeals would be a good idea. At the moment every 1 out of 3 new topics in meta is a ban complaint. It would clean up the section a bit, just like gambling was recently cleaned of ponzis.
P.S. Whoever complains about this forum being harsh should experience a shadow ban, like that crap they do on reddit.

Yup its getting annoying, but the fact that people don't read the other threads on the first page before posting isn't something that can be helped. In any other section it would be deleted as spam, but given the subject matter, and the fact that posts in meta are very infrequently deleted, it makes it tricky.

I actually considered proposing this several months ago but never got around to it. After thinking about this for a while, I would think the likely result is that people would just make a lot of insubstantial posts with their paid signature in the meta section in order for them to continue getting paid while they are banned

We are pretty good at detecting that. If someone creates a thread, gets an answer, and keeps spamming, they will still be hit for ban evasion. Meta isn't a safe haven for banned accounts to post, its the one place that they may post to get answers, and then wait out their ban.

My proposal to have any signature automatically removed when a ban is instituted would actually solve this problem because the signature campaign manager would (hopefully) see the removed signature and would withhold payment as a result, and the incentive for someone to post a bunch of useless posts in meta would be removed

That would be really really bad. Sure it would help with the people who are banned for spamming for their sig ad, but what about the people who have PGP keys, etc?

I'm not really sure what to do at this point, people are going to just not read the rules, then get banned, then complain. I'm not sure what can be done about that. Maybe have a single thread in meta where they can post? But that might cause issues as well.

Maybe, they could also be allowed to send PM's while they are banned? (So instead of making a new thread, they can just ask a mod instead, also, if they are running a business and are in the middle of processing the order, they can finish it.) Of course, if they were banned for spamming people through PM they wouldn't be allowed to send PM's while they are still banned.

They would spam inbox then and also do deals via PM instead of making threads. It will definitely be misused. It contradicts the meaning of 'ban' IMHO.

Good point. Maybe they would have a large limit on PM's when you are banned? One PM every 10 minutes? Or maybe they would just be allowed to PM mods, to ask about the ban.

Meta would become a embassy for the banned Tongue

I'm not against it, it would be allright. But, not like anyone will abided by it. They'll just make a new account anyway.

This is a great point, but how many substantial, relevant posts could a banned person make in the Meta section about their ban before they're called out for spamming again? It's a 2-3 post conversation - 1) Why did I get banned?, 2) But I only said xxx, yyy, zzz!, 3) This sucks! or Ok, I'll wait out my ban.

Anything beyond that would likely get the person in more trouble. A quick PM from staff or a mod could say "your appeal is denied" or "their is no appeal" and could provide a final warning or threaten to extend the ban.

A few cents (dollar tops for the most senior folks) isn't going to make anyone a pay day when they're already on the ban list.

Shouldn't forum users be allowed to use their personal messages however they want (as long as they're not spamming or harassing people)? The campaigns don't pay for PMs and PMs are like email, if someone wants to do deals, let them. They could always change their signature (during the ban) to say "I'm banned, to contact me about deals email me at ...." How could it be misused?

PM spam or unsolicited PMs are a common reason for bans. The point of a ban usually is to keep someone out for a while. Restricting them to PMs would not be a ban, but just that, a restriction.

If someone is spamming the board, why should they be allowed to still do business here?

Im not really here, its just your imagination.
