I know godaddy has  service where they try to contact existing domain owners to broker a deal.  I tried it once and they were not able to get a response.  I'm sure other registrars offer the service.

You could try doing a historical DNS search using the DomainTools Pro features, in case the whois privacy was added later for some reason.

Unlikely; Namecheap enables it by default, and besides, I don't think you can change it after the fact. Contacting them is probably your best bet.

Unless you can get it cheap... Not many people type in domain names anymore.. As in the whole thing. People use google and if they like the site web browser auto completes the url to site if they go back....

Why bother now days? This aint dotcom boom anymore where pets.com might have had actual value in getting customers or users to website...

i think most people would try 'pets.com' or 'flowers.com' or something of the sort before bothering with google.

isn't the dotcom boom?  yeah, well, it's not the 80's anymore, either, with everyone on from either .edu, .gov, or .mil (you had fidonet and what not, but I think the first large scale commercial ISP was netcom in 87 or 88).   i still occasionally fall into the habit of assuming that everyone on the internet is a super intelligent being.  sigh.

I think you're wrong. Most people nowadays just go to Google and type "facebook" to go to facebook.com, "gmail" to go to mail.google.com, "youtube" to go to youtube.com; "flowers" to buy flowers, "pets" to see pets, and so on. Also, most people have autocomplete turned on (even though they sometimes don't use it). To them, it doesn't matter if Facebook is at a .com domain or at a .info or .to one, as long as it shows up as the first Google result.

I feel more and more that I belong to a minority that is able to remember full URLs, even longer ones (ok, just not random ones such as Instawallet URLs). For me it's easier to type gmail.com or mail.google.com than to go to Google and search for "gmail" (it also saves plenty of bandwidth and time, in the end).

In this specific case, I think blockchain.info is very appropriate and easier to remember ("information about the blockchain = blockchain.info"). Personally I like it better than blockchain.com.

I watch my wife open yahoo.com, type in delta.com in the yahoo search, and then click on the search result for delta.com.
No matter how many times I mention the url bar and you can just type it right up there they use ways that are comfortable
for them. The days of entering foobar.com and hoping it goes somewhere nice is over.

When I want blockchain info? I open up a web browser and type in the address bar: bitcoin info. I don't bother remembering the domain name/url anymore. Happens to be the first result.

Maybe the money can be used somewhere else?  Don't get me wrong. If you can get the domain for a 500-1000 bucks go for it.
But 2500? 5000? eh... too much money.

well, then, i guess i'll admit i was wrong

i've been on the internet since the late 80's, so typing in full web addresses is just second nature (if they aren't in my bookmarks).  i.e., i don't have a bookmark for yahoo, so i type in yahoo.com (don't bother with www)

going to google and searching first seems rather inefficient

but, i guess this is why people get paid a penny or two to spam search on mturk

If we did manage to acquire the domain the block explorer would be staying on blockchain.info but the wallet service would be moving to blockchain.com.

blockchain.info/wallet just isn't very brandable.

Any help anybody can provide would be greatly appreciated. Contacting Namecheap was a dead end.
