ok, i merged an audio and video file using VLC media player, how do i go about saving this as one file?

Ctrl + R or Media -> Convert / Save.

I think this will do...

when i do that, the video is short, 8 or 7 seconds and it should be 12 minutes

what plugins have you got installed i think you need to install some plugins to be able to merge or you can try different software to vlc
