Bitcoin: a disaster waiting to happen?

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/opinion/bitcoin-a-disaster-waiting-to-happen/story-e6frg9if-1227263765452

... in this early-adopter phase of a relatively new technology, criminals have exploited the decentralised and anonymous nature of bitcoin, resulting in negative press.

In October 2013, the FBI closed down the Silk Road website because criminals were using it for money-laundering. Four months later, in February last year, the then largest bitcoin exchange, Tokyo-based Mt Gox, suspended customer withdrawals. Customers lost almost $US400 million and the price of a bitcoin fell from about $US900 to near $US500.

Anyone got a free link to the article?

I can totally tell by the part that is posted that there's no point for me to read any further. I'd much rather one person post the complete FUD piece in its entirety so the rest of the interested readers don't have to click and reward these butt slaps. On the other hand, positive articles deserve lots of traffic. Obvious is obvious

the main problem is the fact that bitcoin is a nascent technology, with a very small niche community we should not have so much negativity associated with it.  The Media doesn't get 1/1000th of what actually occurs in our industry.   I bet even the most informed of us don't know 1/10 of the wickedness that is already available to know https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=83794.0

It wasn't simply that silk road and mt gox were financial black eyes for BTC, the key people at the heart of both disasters were also board members for the btc foundation -- the very FACE of BTC.

Now lets put this into relative proportion, image just 2 years after the USD was put into circulation that Alexander Hamilton and one of his buddies on the Federal Reserve board independently decided to fleece the fledgling commonwealth of some enormous amount of their wealth.  This is just madness replayed over and over again.

If we want btc to thrive we've got to make it a safe instrument to work with.  Integrity and accountability must be par for the course.
