A top Chinese official has warned Myanmar his military would take "resolute measures" if its neighbour failed to ensure the safety of the joint border area.

The warning comes after Beijing fighter jets sped to the border when four Chinese farmers were reportedly killed by a bomb dropped by a Myanmar military aircraft in China's southwestern province of Yunnan .

Fan Changlong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, told Min Aung Hlaing, commander-in-chief of Myanmar's armed forces, that the Myanmese military should "seriously control" its troops and prevent any recurrence of such an incident.

"Otherwise, Chinese military will take resolute measures to protect the safety of Chinese people and their assets," Fan was quoted as saying by Xinhua, the state-run news agency.

Fan said Myanmar should understand the seriousness of the incident, launch a thorough investigation and also provide compensation to the families of the victims.

His strongly worded remarks came after state media reported that a bomb fell from a Myanmar aircraft on Friday and exploded in a sugarcane field near the city of Lincang, killing four people and injuring nine others.

However, Myanmar officials claimed that no bomb had been dropped by its aircraft.

The Chinese fighter jets were sent to "track, monitor, warn and chase away" Myanmar military planes that had flown close to the Chinese border on Friday, air force spokesman Shen Jinke was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

French forces moved to take control of the capital of Abidjan after chaos erupted in the world’s largest cocoa producer late last week when Ivorian warplanes launched a surprise airstirke in the northern part of the country that has been controlled by rebels since a failed attempt to oust President Laurent Gbagbo in 2002.

Nine French soldiers and an American civilian aid worker were killed in the attack. The government later called the bombing a mistake. France–which colonized the Ivory Coast for over half a century–has about 4,000 peacekeepers in Ivory Coast. The United Nations has about 6,000, manning a buffer zone between rebel north and government south.

France hit back within hours, wiping out Ivory Coast’s newly built-up air force — two Russian-made jet fighters and at least three helicopter gunships. Following the offensive, rioting and looting targeting French nationals and other foreigners left up to 700 people wounded and gutted homes and businesses. Over the weekend, French armored vehicles rolled through Abidjan after taking control of the international airport, bridges and other strategic points.

That can easily happen around war-zones. E.g. back in '91 a Yugoslavian plane dropped a cluster bomb on a Hungarian village maybe a kilometer away from it's intended target (Croat rebels on the other side of the border/river) because of someone at the flight control overlooked something. At least 1 SAM station was surely tracking the plane but as Yugoslavian planes used to mistakenly enter into the Hungarian air-space the AA command only sent a "routine" warning to the Yugo AA command centre instead of ordering someone to press the "БЛ. ПУCКA" button. Actually for a few minutes nobody realized that the bomb ended on the wrong side of the river.

China stole a lot of technology from the US and it's a huge country and easy to hide stuff.  No telling what level of military capability they truly have.  I'm always skeptical of any kind of measuring of China's military.

Myanmar is one of the very few remaining friends of China in the South Asian region. I don't think that the Chinese would be interested in breaking it.

Most probably it was a provocation to force China to move forces to Myanmar. They are not idiots, they do not want to start another war for the profit of a bankers.

But they can hack the shit out of the US infrastructure and more importantly they can dump their USD and US treasury bond stashes what could cause some serious economic troubles in the States. That certainly wouldn't be pleasant for China itself as well, but as they have lots of production and the rest of the world would still need their stuff they could survive easier than the much more service oriented US economy.

Yeah sure, the US would 'win' militarily but China could still cause a lot of damage, especially when it comes to economic warfare.

Lets all hope that it doesn't get to that point in the future, the last thing we need is another arms race between two superpowers.
