It is not a gimmick but the next step in crypto-tech.

The 3 coins working on it as far as I know are Bitbay, Syscoin and Shadowcash and of course OpenBazaar as well for BTC.

Any others to add or commentary?

BitShares is a decentralized exchange that you can trade market pegged assets such as bitUSD, bitGOLD, bitYUAN, bitSilver, etc.

Users can issue their own asset to trade on bitshares as well.
