With the vast numbers of Bitcointalk forum members, is there anyone here who was one of the users of Mt Gox when they went down?
The Mt Gox incident remains to be the biggest 'scam' to date.
I read some stories about it, and I think it has become a popular story to tell for Bitcoiners all over the world.
Anyone here?

Even if you use Bitcoin through Tor, the way transactions are handled by the network makes anonymity difficult to achieve. Do not expect your transactions to be anonymous unless you really know what you're doing.

Mt. Gox's last official act (well, literally within the hour of news breaking that they'd gone down for good) was to email me a rejection for my account application. :-) Other bullets I've dodged: after months of use, pulled out of Mintpal 100% shortly before they went under. Then pulled everything out of Allcrypt promptly when they announced impending closure, ahead of the reported theft of their BTC wallet a few days ago. Likewise, I was on Vircurex but not one of the users impacted by the thefts there a year ago. |

I had heard a lot of "safeguarding rights" groups before, Year passed, they seemed to disappear, I think there are nothing they can do, what gone is gone, I don't think they can get their money back since there is little progress in MtGox investigation. The Victims have a life, they can't keep tracking this mess all days.

I did not lost that much as many are. I had about 1.5BTC and as everyone, I trusted them.
But I doubt I will see it again.

being the largest exchange back then, there should be a lot of them. However, there is close to 0% chance of getting it back. It would be useless whining about it.

May I ask if you are an early adopter and had a 'serious' amount deposited with those parties? I guess you're keeping an iron vice on your bitcoins now. IMHO there are too many scams/hacks out there. |

And like OP I also want to meet guys like you who experienced that incident first hand. For me, you were just like Jack in the movie Titanic.  |

No, not an early adopter. That's probably what saved me in the case of Mt. Gox. I got into bitcoin after thinking about the poor future and instability of fiat currencies around Christmas 2013. This led me to a little project of drawing up a list of characteristics that I thought "good money" should have, and I started grading the Dollar based on it. I'd seen occasional brief mentions of something called "bitcoin" in regular news media, and that was ticking up with the huge rise in price in late 2013. So one day a little light bulb came on in my brain, "maybe this bitcoin thing is more along the lines of what I think good money should be like?" I started investigating, satisfied myself that while not perfect it was objectively superior in most measures to the Dollar... and within two weeks I was starting to mine altcoins, and by end of January was impatiently awaiting my altcoin mining rig. I started signing up for exchanges in January, but fortunately (for me) by that point Gox was running into all kinds of trouble. As the leading exchange it was natural I'd want an account with them, but by early February 2014 there were so many red flags I can't imagine I'd ever have used them. The other cases are just good fortune for me, combined with making decisions and acting promptly and decisively whenever I hear meaningful news of trouble related to bitcoin/altcoin services I use. Keep your eyes open. |

Only 0.8 Bitcoins lost here, I deserved it though, I deposited and bought bitcoins when they wouldn't allow any withdrawls. I knew I was taking a big chance, and I lost. I still think I might get about 0.2 BTC back from it one day, who knows how much bitcoin will be worth when that happens, maybe I'll be in profit! |

It may be harsh to say - but we are stronger after collapse of Mt.Gox. I think it was a good example of what could happen when exchange goes 'rogue'.
It is actually good that collapse of big exchange market happened so early in a bitcoin history and we all learned from it. Now we are more cautious about ner bitcoin services and we know: 'do not keep coins as exchanges deposit".

I had lost around BTC0.01 when Gox crashed. Trust me, it was not a small amount.  Going by the exchange rates of that time, BTC0.01 was equivalent to $8. That is 8 cans of beer or 4 pizzas... or 8 burgers... |

I lost $2k (or $600 in todays terms) but then that $2k was what was left of the $15k I made by simply fixing a corrupt LTC wallet when 1 BTC was worth $1k...fun times...

Every bitcoin user is a victim of the MtGox incident. If that thing wouldn't have happened then I think bitcoin wouldn't have come down to $230, it would still have been hovering around to >$1000(I don't care if the hype was created by Willie or it was real). And yes, I was also a direct victim of the gox thing, but lost a very very few coins approx to 0.05BTC. |
