I transferred some money to MtGox and after I had the opertunity to get a free YUBI key for extra security. "Nice", I thought and ordered it.
Weeeeeell. I forgot everything about import tax. I thought the "free" yubi key was sent so it's free to recieve. I should have read the small fine print.
Anywho, I ended up paying 40USD/25GBP/31EURO import tax for this free YUBI key.
Idiot me.

Where the heck do you live that they can charge you $40 tax on a $20 item?

That doesn't make sense.. When I paid for my Mt. Gox yubikey and it cost me 25-40 us dollars (cant remember what they were charging last year) I saw that they declared the value and they paid like 1 or 2 dollars import tax on it..
Anyways, the yubikey is such a great peace of MIND that its worth twice that... Now, you won't have to worry about someone getting into your account.. Everyone that has over 100 dollars worth in mt. gox should have one.... It makes me sleep better at night..
EDIT:I see you are in Denmark, man you have a high tax rate...

Ok, so Denmark. Is the tax rate there 100% for imported electronics?
If not you should really ask them to justify that number, m8.

They should have printed 1GB on it...
I just ran a $10 flash drive through a duty calculator
Total customs value: Dkr90.75 - Duty: Dkr0.00 - VAT: Dkr0.00 Total import duty & taxes due: Dkr0.00 Total landed cost: Dkr90.75 at USD/DKK exchange rate of 6.0502
Notes on duty & taxes rates
Usb Flash Drive is duty free and has a VAT rate of 25% .
Notes on import taxes due
The duty and VAT results are nil because the total value of the products is less than Dkr80.00 Please note, any insurance charges need to be declared to ensure accurate duty and VAT results. Please note that your shipping provider may add an additional handling fee
Probably the most correct category is "e-signature device". Here is $25 value with $5 shipping:
Calculation results Edit Total customs value: Dkr181.51 - Duty: Dkr0.00 - VAT: Dkr45.38 Total import duty & taxes due: Dkr45.38 Total landed cost: Dkr226.88 at USD/DKK exchange rate of 6.0502 Calculation notes Notes on duty & taxes rates
E-Signature Devices has an import duty rate of 9.3% and VAT rate of 25% .
Notes on import taxes due
Duty result is nil because the total value of the products does not exceed Dkr1150.00 Please note, any insurance charges need to be declared to ensure accurate duty and VAT results. Please note that your shipping provider may add an additional handling fee

Got to love how they not only charge you an import fee, but also VAT on that fee!

I live in Canada, and ordered a small, $3 laptop fan from a company in the states. Ended up paying about $40 in import fees. "Free trade" my ass.

Which company did they use to send the package?
I have seen UPS mark up $3.50 worth of GST to $53.50 with a $50 brokerage fee here in Canada. They then were the subject of a class action lawsuit. I raised this issue in this post as it is a serious issue that many companies are not aware of. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=74400.msg1080416#msg1080416The problem here is companies like UPS using the GST and VAT as a pretext to gouge people.

In most countries items below $200 are not charged for VAT. I think we'll change the declared value as currently we take the item value, but the item we sell also includes shipping fees. Instead we'll put the actual production price of the Yubikey, which is more likely to fall within tax exemption.

I don't think it's EMS fault since the Danish import service thingy or whatever they are called has valued the package to 47 USD instead of 29.99. Imma call 'em.

gotcha, did they maybe append the shipping cost as reported by EMS to the value?

gotcha, did they maybe append the shipping cost as reported by EMS to the value? Well it seems so. Price of key: ~180 DKK Postage paid: 1500 YEN = 115 DKK == 295 DKK I called the postal service and they thought it was a bit weird. But I'm going to call the Costums tomorrow from work, and I'll remember to bring all the paperwork. The woman on the phone thought it was weird that I got charged all this for a thing I got for free.

gotcha, did they maybe append the shipping cost as reported by EMS to the value? That appears to be what the duty calculator I posted does too, the shipping cost is added to the value. $25 = 151.255 $25 + $5 = 181.506 It looks as though 25% VAT should be the only duty applied. I would bring the receipt where you ordered it and paid 0.00 DKK.
