I'm subscribed to a couple of boards like the altcoin announcements section and have email notifications enabled but for some new threads I don't get notifications at all. I'm not sure if maybe these threads were created somewhere else and have been moved or why but sometimes there are no emails whatsoever (not in spam, etc). I'm using gmail.

For example, I haven't received an email about this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=994869.0 and this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996096.0 while I did receive one about this one: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996567.0

So why is that?

Me too. I have subscribed to a board but I rarely receive notifications. I get notified for my own threads but not the board. I don't know the reason though.

So why is that?

Are you using hotmal as e-mail provider ? Check this thread : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=949175.0   Here the reply from theymos:

It seems that hotmail.com is silently dropping forum emails for some reason, even though they say via SMTP that they're accepting the emails. You should complain to them.

I'm using gmail, even tried a new gmail address but it's the same. I always get notifications about topic replies and PMs but about 50% of the time I don't get emails about new threads from subscribed boards.

Gmail has some odd filters, it used to drive some important emails straight to the trash, thankfully it learns quickly after you mark it as not spam.

This is infuriating. Whatever email provider I try a bunch of notifications never arrive.

Is there a Chrome extension or something that I can use to check for new threads?

You may watch boards and open watchlist quite often, every 2-5 mins or so.
