Stem cell research has demonstrated that human skin cells and fibroblasts (a different kind of adult cell) can be turned into embryonic stem cells. Now, researchers at Cambridge University and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel have shown that embryonic stem cells can be programmed to form primordial germ cells. These are the stem cells that can go on to form either eggs or sperm. If scientists can figure out how to turn a primordial germ cell that originated from the skin of a man into an egg, could it be fertilized with his partner’s sperm?

Research using primordial germ cells in mice has shown that these cells can be turned into eggs and sperm capable of forming pups (baby mice). Many experiments were required, but tremendous knowledge was gained.

There are various scientific obstacles to reaching the point where the cells of two men or two women could make a baby. There will also be ethical debates. Religious and conservative leaders around the world still vehemently oppose same sex marriage and homosexual acts, let alone a gay couple having a child of their own.

I realize this article addresses the desire of same sex couples to have children which are biologically related to both of them, but I'm going to comment beyond that, as I feel this relates to our dystopian future. (Which is far more interesting to me than discussing gay/lesbian rights, as they don't concern me.)

I'm certain science and industry will (among other things in this 'Brave New World') eventually discover a way to make humans without the primitive need for our biological input. Perhaps you'll be able to just order from a catalog or even program your replicator to create whichever designer baby you feel like that day.


Then again, maybe we'll just be grown in fields (like plants) by TPTB, as was portrayed in 'The Matrix'.

The whole idea is completely idiotic when the world is already overpopulated compared to sustainable resources in the first place.  Instead of telling people to stop mindlessly having so many kids, or to just adopt one, let's make it so people who nature doesn't even allow to have kids can create more!

The other problem is that if anyone wants to objectively speak on an issue like this, they'll sound like a Nazi eugenicist, even while using real facts.  The statistics show that caucasians in the US are at equilibrium, while caucasians in just about every other country are decreasing in population.  The reason the population continues to increase, is that a few demographics are currently reproducing out of control.  When you force everyone into globalization trade deals and for people to lose sovereignty, the overpopulation problem of some other country is now your problem, and they have no reason to fix it since they can outsource their problem to you.

From what I can tell, it's only the Mormons, Amish, Mennonites that tend to have excessive families but the nuances to those lifestyles have reasons for this. Before we even discuss new ways to have kids we need to address the subsidization of those that have them but can't afford to care for their bunch. We have to wind down and phase out the incentives to have more kids than necessary while also stimulating incentives for women to have kids w/o a steady partner or preferably being married and financially secure enough in life for even having the first one. In this day and age, there's no excuse for having kids w/o the means to care for them when there's plenty of birth control for women to take.

Back in 2012 we produced food what should have been enough for about 10 billion ppl for cca. 3000 kcal per day per person (1500-2000 cal is the recommended).  The problem isn't the scarcity of food but the unbalanced distribution. The developed countries wasting more than 220 million tons of food every year (in 2009).
The already overpopulated also not true. The whole mankind would fit to area sized like Texas (and we would have cca. 96 square meter per person).
Of course we feel it overcrowded because of since 2008 more than half of humanity living in cities, but outside the cities there are wast scarcely populated areas.

So the problem isn't the scarcity of food or the lack of living space all this shit happens because of unbalanced wealth distribution and shitty management.

I mostly agree with you here, but you also have to take into consideration what living standards people will have, not just access to food and other basic needs; and I'm not entirely sure we could sustain the current world population at the living standards rich, developed countries currently afford - well, not as they do it at the moment, or not for long anyway. But, if we get rid of the consumption driven economic model, prevent waste, and as you say, promote better management and wealth distribution, maybe then it would be possible.

You are right, but wasting isn't part of the living standards... or at least it shouldn't. So currently we are maintaining our living standards and on the top of it we are wasting stuff what would be more than enough for keeping all the starving ppl across the world well fed.

According to the UN since the mid nineties the fertility rate is continuously falling and they are expecting a trend reversal point around 2050 when the population will start to decrease. Actually in the developed countries because of the ageing population this will cause some serious issues.

I don't think you understand things like factory farms should not even exist in the first place, and that "improvement in efficiency" is one of the reasons we can even manage to sustain the population we already have with cheap food. 

Take that away, and as someone said, even milk is $10 a gallon or something, but you're not committing some kind of satanic torture to animals anymore at least.  If you think practices like this are ok as it is now, then I guess you won't mind when the soylent green factories come.
