I dont understand how sending it as a gift wont stop a chargeback,

I sent PP as a gift and got screwed over (10 bucks big deal), when I went to do chargeback it wouldnt even let me.

Big red letters, cannot chargeback since payments was not for goods or services.

People keep saying if you do gift chargebacks can still happen easily.

I understand maybe if they pay with credit card but what if it is paypal fund or ACH payment?

Gift (Family and Friends) Payments ensure that the user cannot file a complaint to Paypal saying they did not receive anything, since it was sent by you to "family or friends". Gift Payments are not covered by the Paypal Buyer Protection which means Buyers cannot chargeback payments made to you.

You understood this the wrong way. Its not protecting the sender from a chargeback happening, it protects the receiver from chargebacks. At least as far as i know.

However if the buyer says that his account was "compromised" then PayPal usually accepts the charge back, even if it was sent as a gift from PayPal balance.
There's no way to prevent charge backs for sure.

It says "instant" either way, but if the payment is for goods and services, they will deduct a fee, usually give you a shipping address, and possibly place a 21-day hold.

Theres different types of chargebacks. This may prevent the one type where they claim "the item was not how it was, or was never shipped", or the unauthorized account access one. They still can file for this, since smart theives would just send with friends and family and expect to not be caught and have the funds returned through chargeback.

If a legit account owned sends a paypal gift from their normal pc/broswer/ip, there is no way to chargeback. The only way to chargeback the gift, is to prove that the real account owner did not send the gift payment (unauthorized aka fraud). Many scammers will use a stolen paypal account to send you the gift payment. This is how the gift chargeback always happens.

What you are referring to is a dispute!

When you make a gift payment, it is true that you cannot file a dispute at PayPal's Resolution Center.
However, if your payment was made via a credit card, you CAN file a charge-back with your bank.
This will immediately reverse the transaction and send the money back to the credit card holders account.

When you do a charge back on a paypal item.  Yes you get money on most cards instantly but paypal still talks to your credit card company.  In a way I would make a argument it's just a different kind of dispute. 

I know I unfortunately used charge back on some cooling gear.  Paypal was still involved with my credit card company.   Eventually over a month later I finally got replacement for broken products and charge back went to seller.

If you sell digital goods and you accept gift payments through PayPal you are just asking to be scammed! PayPal does not allow you to dispute it but like another member mentioned you can dispute the charge with the credit card/bank. Since it's a gift PayPal has no Proof to give to the bank so PayPal automatically reverses the payment. I know this by experience so don't let it happen to you.

That's wrong. Even if you send money as "gift" when you dispute it Paypal will refund you. They changed their ToS 3-4 years ago.
If you sell Bitcoin with Paypal, buyer can open dispute and get back their money. You can't do anything about this chargeback.
Don't use Paypal for Bitcoin related transactions ever.

Not exactly. Sending as a Paypal "gift" doesn't exist anymore. Don't know why people refer to it still. Was thrown out a long while ago. It's now payment for a service or product/friends or family. No gifting option is there, meaning disputing options are available for both. For scammers, they always charge back though credit cards, claiming items weren't given to them in cases where tracking numbers are not there, and more commonly, as "unauthorized access" in which, according to Paypal, they'll refund you up to a certain amount. An unauthorized transaction can occur without switching browsers or IP's (theoretically), so Paypal pretty much grants refunds left and right to honor their security terms leaving the seller in a hole to rot with a fat negative balance.

I agree, PP and bitcoin DO NOT MIX!  If you look at their terms of service you will see that they DO NOT allow digital goods to be bought/sold thru paypal.  They will tell you its against their terms of service, and will not care if you get scammed buying or selling.  Also this goes for eBay, dont buy/sell btc on ebay

I think its actually anything bought with a credit card can be charged back.  You can pay with a credit card through paypal though, and thats technically how you do the chargeback, through your cred card, claiming fraudulent use.

Sending the payment as a "gift" doesn't protect you, but the receiver. Better to just send it as a regular payment and pay the fees to make sure you're covered when it happens.

I did it because it was the easiest way to get the money into "real" money for spending online. It was a mistake, and at the time I did not know of the other solutions. Right now my favorite exchange quadrigacx actually withdraws in paypal now which is quite good.

Yup credit cards can be charged back.

But they could also have been using stolen credit card info.
