Pretty amazing on how slow hash rate is moving at this point.

Seems like were at a pretty slow move on hashrate.

yeah lots of time ,

but boy we all seem to be threading water big miners and little miners.

No new gear just level prices.  MMmmmm not bad if your power is 8 cents or lower

Hey, as long as the diff stays exactly the same, all of us currently mining (at even a tiny profit) will hit 100% ROI.

Wheeeee. I'm happy with the current state of things  ;)

I'm hoping the trend continues.  My S3s are well beyond my initial expected lifespan for them at this point.  When I first got them I figured I'd be lucky to make it until December of last year before they became unprofitable.

Luckily there are not huge difficulty jumps anymore. And so far for the last 6 months there has been a total of 20% increase, which is awesome for us.

Exactly... last year if you even thought about posting a difficulty increase of less than 10% every 12 days people wrote you off as insane.  Now it's May, 2015 and the difficulty has gone up about 7B since November (from about 40B to about 47B).  My gear remains mining :).

With my summer power price kicking in.  I am down to a pair os s-3's batch 1 mining since July 23-26th 2014.

This pair of miners have done both positive   btc roi and usd roi .  I have them in a very low power cost spot.  2.4 cents a kwatt

If growth is 3% and price is 240 usd these will earn money into the year 2017

Until next gen hardware comes out, we probably would only expect nominal difficulty increases right?

This would be our hope.   If it is true we get a little extra mining time out of current gen.

On BTC price it slid down to 238 so the 240+ party is already over.

I have done a lot of research on this.  My guess is 2% over the next 6 months.

A big price jump makes that go up more.

I think a new gen with 0.2 watts  would increase diff  to 7% the first 6 adjustments or  3 months  after it comes out.

I think a new gen with 0.35 watts would increase diff to  4% the first 6 adjustments or 3 months after it comes out.

I guess 2% since I do not see new gear anytime soon.

This could be true.

At least for the next 4 or 5 jumps as the summer heat is coming and down-clocking gear will be necessary for many miners.

This last difficulty adjust could have easily been a negative .07% if the blocks had fallen slight differently. A stable difficulty is great, a stagnant BTC price of $230 may well tend to keep it there a while longer.  Even if you are manufacturer of the ASIC gear, doubling your farm hashrate doesn't really help much, because a couple of weeks later a positive difficulty adjustment just washes away any gain you had in your hashrate. And unless you installed more efficient gear, you doubled your electric bill, however large or small that may be.

It's possible that the mining community at large has figured out that an ASIC "Arms Race" doesn't really help anyone for very long, unless the BTC price also increases.

This could really benefit us miners if we keep getting such low jumps.  I would agree summer heat will be a issue for some miners.   It's coming fast on the heat.

I guess we will see but I'm hoping for low jumps, negative would be a bonus.

Yeah if your farm has 1000 s-5's  standing pat works if you power is low cost.

Lets say the s-7 comes out in sept 2015.  and lets say it does .35 watts  slowly replacing those s-5's and keep your hash exactly the same works since your power drops quite a bit.

In the mature Asic market this is a sensible money move

ie 1ph burning 520,000 kwatts  vs 1 ph burning 350,000   means my profit goes up the price of 170,000 kwatts

We will have to wait and see if it does well at the wall. I also suspect if it mines well btc-ltc.

ltc will take a solid price hit. Still they made a nice chip for ltc last year.  It was not good for btc or btc + ltc

maybe it has the same issues as last year.

The tables I saw for the SFARDS chip make it look like a step, but not a leap in efficiency. I don't mean this as a knock, just a recognition of the situation.

My bet is that they will try and get a serious premium for it's "LTC feature", and it will make it appear "overpriced" as a Bitcoin miner only.

Thank goodness this is a speculation thread and I don't have to reveal my overall ignorance of the LTC universe and it's machinations.  :)

I've been making a working assumption of about 2% for quite a while now. Of course it's difficult to test this theory over the short term because of variance issues (the variance is larger than the trend). The only thing that would change this would be a major shift in the BTC price again.

LTC has been a tough game.  I know i got out of the scrypt mining after having a A2 for a while.   Profits just were crazy low, and many took loses.

I am hoping they base their miner or the BTC side, if they do go scrypt I think profitable is much much harder.

okay we are at block 1723  which means we did 293 blocks

At block     1716   we will have done 300 and picks will open up

https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty   ...........................    (-2.71%)

 http://www.bitcoincharts.com/ ..............................................  (-1.66%)

I stick with my -1.01 to -1.25%   with my real pick as -1.11%

As I will give homage to seriouscoin.

So picks will open very soon.

If you look at the 9 month display you can see that difficulty is definitely plateauing off as this year progresses.  I wonder if we'll ever see a downward trend for network diff?  These next two years will be interesting, both with the halving coming up and with improvements in hardware efficiency (I think we've see all the significant speed increases we will see for ASICs).

yeah  price will be the ruler not diff.   if demand goes up and price goes up more gear will come on line.

You don't need great math skills to see swapping old gear for new gear and maintaining your hashrate works.

ie  2  s-3's  = 1th  burns 800 watts

 1 s-5      =   1.15th  burns 680 watts

very small hash increase   but a solid watts decrease

now it is hotter down clock the s-5 to 1th  drop watts to 520

exact same hash rate and 280 watts drop.

Big companies are not stupid now that they don't sell to miners that much they need to follow the formula above to make money.

And, in the long run, makes Bitcoin more environmentally friendly, especially since a huge majority of the electricity poured into the network comes from burning coal.

My pick: -1.76% to -2.00%

Biggest thing we actually have passed 240 on btc.  Were at 241 with a little upward trend.
I'm hoping the trend continues. My S3s are well beyond my initial expected lifespan for them at this point.  When I first got them I figured I'd be lucky to make it until December of last year before they became unprofitable.

I assume the owner was talking about the time for making a ROI , but that made me curios.
What is going to be the average real lifespan of those machines?
I assume most of those ASIC will run with no problems for 1-2 years but are they designed and built to last much more than that?

I ask this because a lot of machines are running now because running cost < reward but a lot of owners won't purchase a new one if their miner will go kaboom

I still am amazed at how we are slowing down with so many negatives.   Here was last year in may:

May 24 2014    10,455,720,138    18.10%    74,844,960 GH/s
May 12 2014    8,853,416,309    10.66%    63,375,223 GH/s

A year ago I thought we would almost always see double digit changes.  But we seem hit pretty slow on growth.  Btc still is not extremely high I wonder how long till next gen.

Well Bitcoin was still pretty high at that point, and all the hardware that kept being introduced made mining nuts.

Businesses made some good profit while their hardware lasted...

I would guess -3.51% to 3.75%. The stagnant price of BTC plus the lack of availability of new hardware (especially that of more/better efficiency) means that little new hardware is going to be brought online and some amount of hardware will be taken offline because of costs, warmer weather, ect

I feel that they don't want to spend money without needing to.  Right now kinda riding old investment's.   They are using equipment likely longer then they planned, which could mean additional income.

I think it will be next gen tech before we see a ton of new PH coming online.  Once next gen comes out I think we will finnaly see some expansion.  Question is how long till chips hit the market and widespread... we will see no one is to talking to much about dates.

Were still above 240 but it's going awful close to under.  I really want it to switch directions and 240+ stay.

I guess we will see tonight what happens.  I think we might be under 240 again.

 http://btc.blockr.io/charts

5/3/2015    140 blocks----------- that is -   2   since about half were the last adjustment and half were this adjustment
5/4/2015    130 blocks----------  that is - 14
5/5/2015    154 blocks----------  that is +10
5/6/2015    157 blocks----------  that is +13
5/7/2015    148 blocks----------  that is +4
5/8/2015    143 blocks----------  that is -1
5/9/2015    140 blocks----------  that is -4

so maybe +6 blocks  after  907 blocks are made  at the moment   so 907 vs 901 =

that is (+0.66%)  for a 'real' time number.

we are at the 1109 block mark.  basically pretty flat   very hard to predict up or down  -1.5 to  +2 could all happen.

We are kind of in a prolonged flat spell.  I feel many companies want to do something but are afraid to drop a bomb.
I still go back to the new gear is out and about and some companies just kept hash flat while cutting power costs.
Waiting for someone to make a sprint and add 25 ph ot 50 ph but this may not happen.

Boy more of that same -1 to +1 week after week.

But flat works very well as price stays neat the 240 usd mark---- S3's can turn a profit at .09 cents a kwatt----- pretty amazing
a 10 month old asic can still make money

One more thing the 1000 block mark should be here in about 15 hours close to 12 noon EST on Mom's day.  I will post a warning when we get really close.

I would agree with this.  It's hard to tell and some of it could be luck.  I am hoping we get negative but small plus is ok.

With BTC staying above 240 right now anything in that range is not to bad for trade in higher btc price.

5/ 9/2015    140 blocks----------  that is -4
5/10/2015   122 blocks----------  that is -22

we are down about 18 blocks at the moment.

we have made 1041 blocks   -18 means we should be at 1059

So we has a 'real number of (-1.69%)

I wonder if we pop a second 120 block day on monday .  Maybe lots of guys were too busy to mine and were doing moms day instead.

Well whether I am your obi wan kenobi or your  Yoda  I simply don't know, but I do know right now you are close to the leaders.

I have been finding out one thing with this thread  long term stable Diff   knocks out a lot of speculation.

I have to thank suchmoon for adding the promo part as it keeps things interesting.

These threads would have ended without the promo.

week after week of flatness would have been boring to guess on:
below the last 16 adjustments = +2.1%

This would mean this rate in 16 more jumps   66664 M  now I am not so sure we stay at this rate but if we do an s-3 with 9 cent power would still be a money earner.

I have to think builders of asics understand expanding hash via farms or stand alone home miners is not the way to do it. The risks are very high.

Miner's make heat  the world needs heat in many places so

using a miner for winter heating.  using a miner as a swimming pool heater.  = future ideas.

Bick says as an addon device  yeah it could work.  I agree.

My piece of advice is plan for this  old school way of mining to change.  A farm with 5 or 10 ph in a cold place wasting the heat is not going to work.
Saving the heat for  useful purposes is a new BTC goal.  Well at least I think so.

My recollection is that when we got down to 1000 blocks remaining, the contest would close to further picks for this round. Do I have that right Phillip? If so, you might want to adjust the title to reflect that further picks are closed.

I can't recall a time when difficulty has just been "bumping along" at a more or less constant value, but I didn't join the mining party until the summer of 2013. Any others recall such a "calm" period?

Bitwisdom is starting to jump a little less:

Bitcoin Difficulty:    47,643,398,018
Estimated Next Difficulty:    47,259,632,360 (-0.81%)
Adjust time:    After 861 Blocks, About 6.0 days

Looking like good chance of difficulty  as a small negative. Price seems to hoover around 240 which is not bad.  Right now were at 242 per BTC.

this will be fixed thanks. and now fixed.

No we are very stable super growth is over.

Basically 2 reasons  asics no longer cut efficiency much.

The 2 watt level s-1 Became the .8 watt level s-3 Became the .52 watt level s-5.

An s-3 in a 8 cent power spot still earns money.

Hash growth is worthless power cutting is not worthless >   This appears to be the new mantra.

I believe the gear exists but that the major players do not want a hash rate war.   If you think a hash rate war hurts a guy like me so what 3-5k in gear. In my case I now own 3 s-3's that's it.

spot rent from nicehash to mine.  So if the big players jack hash up and up and up.  I do not lose much.  I can rent gear or buy coins.

They get cut.    They are not stupid they do not want that to happen.  Just a guess  as to why ,but it is a spec thread ;D

Estimated Next Difficulty:    47,936,563,004 (+0.62%)
Adjust time:    After 796 Blocks, About 5.4 days

We will see still a low positive even then.  I hope to see a small neg still.  Price is hanging on by a thread at 240.  Seems we have trouble keeping price above 240 lately.

Price almost 243.  I'm starting to think we will be able to stay around 240 for a bit.  Which is a jump from the 220 we were stuck at for a while.

That is a decent jump in a month or so. If we an continue this trend it will be very very  nice.

It could be luck pushing hash difficulty of low negative to low positive.

Bitwisdom now shows:

Bitcoin Difficulty:    47,643,398,018
Estimated Next Difficulty:    47,422,978,687 (-0.46%)
Adjust time:    After 704 Blocks, About 4.9 days
Hashrate(?):    339,798,574 GH/s

I would be extremely happy with a negative this week.  If we got a negative and price over 240 I would consider it pretty great week.

251 usd a coin------------------------ We all win on our held coins

I would agree 250 would be a huge win for us if we can get it stable.  If you look 220 compared to 250 we would have gained around a 12 percent increase in price.

I hope we get to 250.  240 seems to be happening pretty stable at this point.  Which is also a win for us miners.

Were ending the night with slightly positive number on bitwisdom:

Bitcoin Difficulty:    47,643,398,018
Estimated Next Difficulty:    47,745,939,659 (+0.22%)
Adjust time:    After 647 Blocks, About 4.4 days

Price is hanging around 241.   So still not bad overall.

5/ 3/2015    140 blocks----------- that is -   2   since about half were the last adjustment and half were this adjustment
5/ 4/2015    130 blocks----------  that is - 14
5/ 5/2015    154 blocks----------  that is +10
5/ 6/2015    157 blocks----------  that is +13
5/ 7/2015    148 blocks----------  that is +4

5/11/2015   147 blocks----------  that is +3
5/12/2015   154 blocks----------  that is +10

we are down about 5 blocks at the moment.

we have made 1406  blocks   -5 means we should be at 1411

So we have a 'real number of (-0.35%)

I suspect some variance has been in charge this entire adjustment period

other then Mother's Day which was the lowest day.  I think that day was the miners had do do Mom's da thus some gear was turned down.

Isn't mother's day a US only "holiday"?  Since the majority of hash power is overseas I don't see how Mom's day would contribute.

Well we did 122 blocks then jumped up hard on mon and tues.   so 122 is a lot for variance .  if we are truly flat 134 to 154  is more then likely variance.

Some mining gear needs baby sitting and on a day like mom's day  miners in the usa could be too busy to maintain gear   .

the network is 340ph and should make 144 blocks   so if 10ph got shut off due to holiday business  that is about 4 or 5 blocks.  the rest is variance .

I figure most of europe lost home mining due to power prices.

I think 80ph is USA .
I think 10 ph is Canada

http://www.statutoryholidays.com/mothers-day.php   USA Canada a few other countries

see wiki

China is in the list for Sun the 10th of 2015

Hopefully it goes back up, guess we will see.

Bitwisdom seems to be shooting up right now:

Bitcoin Difficulty:    47,643,398,018
Estimated Next Difficulty:    48,140,287,735 (+1.04%)
Adjust time:    After 504 Blocks, About 3.4 days
Hashrate(?):    368,349,354 GH/s

So looks like we might be looking at a positive number.  Price dropped around 5 dollars to around 235.  So not the best of day's on changes.

Big jump in the hashrate at the moment as we always see since a few weeks or more.

Antpool are just lucky I guess. They still have a steady 64-67 PH.

EDIT: they just pulled another 4 block on 32 minutes

Bitcoin Difficulty:    47,643,398,018

Adjust time:    After 390 Blocks, About 2.7 days

Definitely looking like low positive at this point on difficulty change still around 2 days left though.  Price is around 236, so approaching 240 again.

Well antpool did 37 blocks yesterday out of 170

they should do  23 blocks  and the networks should do 144

they were 14 over     the network was  26 over.

they are at 31 today with 3.5 hours to go.

the network has done  131 blocks with  3.5 hours to go.

we are on pace for 165 blocks

antpool is on pace for  38 blocks

truly amazing numbers for them.

In 2 days time 3 days worth of blocks!

So it's looking pretty for sure on positive.   Price around 237 so a little recovery of the drop from 240.

we have made 1677  blocks   +25  means we should be at 1652

So we have a 'real number of (+1.51%)

with only 339 blocks left  we would need a 130 block day and a 130 block day back to back  to go just a little negative.

We have had 4 really good block days  since moms day.  I do think we go slow on Fri and Sat finishing up  close to 0 on Sun

only time will tell.

philipma1957 here with my secondary account.

I am running around   FRI. SAT. and Sun.

I like using this  secondary account when not in my home.

I was looking at block count for the day.

https://blockchain.info/blocks

we are at block 356582 -356467 =

115 blocks made from 00:00:00 to  18:06:31   so in 18.1 hours x 6 = 108.6 or 109 blocks

we are 6 over for today.

31 over for the adjustment period.

1766 vs 1735   the 'real' number is (+1.78%)

bitcoinwisdom's number of (+2.25%)

is assuming continued high block days  for the rest of today sat and part of sun.

31 over is pretty hard to drop back to under since we have just 250 blocks left.

Yea most likely a small bump in difficulty this week.  Price is around 237 so we did gain price compared the the 220 we were at for a long time.

So it's still not all bad.

I'm wondering  the same. Will be interesting if they do release one. I also wonder on SFards since they did show a dev kit.

It seems like they should have a miner in not to long if they really do have prototypes/devkit's.  I don't think i've seen anyone with one yet so guess it cold be a bit.

Looking pretty solid it will be around +2 this week at the end of it.  Price is slipping slightly at 236 we have a lot of trouble getting to and stay above 240 it seems.  I'm hoping next difficulty change we can see it go above 240 and stay.

Yeah, it looks like the folks that picked a decrease are out of luck this time. I am beginning to wonder if this is more than just variance. For some reason it almost feels like something real got added. Nothing real to back that up, just that it seems like this may be a permanent +2% addition, rather than a transient one.

On the upside, I am in the running for a win this time! :)

here is my guess avalon has built the mini 4's and is burning some in.

I also think the same of sfards….   If we did not have the very low block count on mom's day we would have done 3 or 4 %

I think we may slide over 2 by sunday.

as for a daily count

https://blockchain.info/blocks

356681 - 356614 =  67 blocks in 12 hours and 10 minutes  which is down   as 12 hours =72 +1 so 73 would be 'normal'

Down six  for this half day.  so that would be about up 24 for the entire 1865 blocks made so far

so 1865 vs 1841 =  a real time number of  (+1.30%)    with  151 blocks left

Price around the night is around 236 and moving up very slightly tonight.  Still not over the 240 again.

My goal for near future is solid over 240.  But I'm not sure how long it will take us.

I was a little disappointed.  It seemed like we would be between 1-2 percent.   But it did jump at the end for sure.
