Title: BITCOIN TECHNICIANS PLEASE HELP!!!! URGENT"
Post by: unseenbutheard7 on September 03, 2012, 10:51:04 AM
I was referred to you by the Gox support team.  They directly informed me that the only way to get my problem resolved is to speak to you. (and I REALLY hope you can help otherwise i will never use GOX again because the support desk was so rude and didnt even try to help let alone there has been NUMBEROUS transaction problems.)

So here is the problem, I really really would appreciate some help on this since everyone at GOX is ignoring me.

I deposited £200 via my bank account to my Mt Gox account. Once it was cleared, I attempted to withdraw it to my wallet. However I created a SEND address from my wallet, not a RECIEVE address, and by accident I used Mt Gox Account to send my £200 of bitcoin to a SEND ADDRESS generated by my wallet.

Now I have nothing. Please tell me that this is something that can be fixed and that my physical £200 isnt floating around in cyberspace, i work really hard for my money and I need this resolved.

PLEASE HELP ME! ANYONE!!

Your wallet doesn't create send addresses, those are ones youve used in the past or added to a contact list. You sent your money to somebody else.

Wallets only create receive addresses.

Try to find out who owns the address you send your btc to, first step would be to look up the transaction on http://blockchain.info, followed by http://blockviewer.com ...

Start gathering info from there and then hope that the owner is a nice person.

How the holy hell did you make a send to address? What Client Version are you using? (ie, Bitcoin-QT 6.0.1, Armory, NamecoinGUI, Etc) Second, Is your blockchain caught up to the current block?(on bitcoin-QT windows version, which I use, there is a status bar on the bottom of the GUI that shows how much of the chain is downloaded.Your current block should be 197019 as of this post)

As has been pointed out, this statement makes no sense. You cannot possibly have simply "created" a "send" address in your wallet. All addresses generated by your wallet are receiving addresses; a sending address can only appear in your wallet if you obtained it from somewhere else. Please tell us, step by step, exactly what you did to obtain the address you gave to Mt. Gox. At this point, it's not at all clear whether you really sent your coins to somebody else, or whether you only think you did and the problem is actually something completely different.

My money is on an un-updated blockchain in his client, or a bad google translate translation....

has your client finished downloading the blockchain? Its impossible to generate a send address, so unless you typed one in yourself, the coins are probably just delayed in showing up in your wallet.

Thanks for all responses.

I know i am an idiot, i made a mistake just really need to be rectified.

client i am using is Latest Bitcoin-Qt version: 0.6.3

I didnt create  a send address by manually typing it.  This is what happened.. i went to withdraw my btc from gox, and instead of copy/pasting the address from a newly created RECIEVE address, i accidentally copied/pasted a SEND coins address...

I dont I am really confused and am new to BTC and have read everything about how to use it 100 times so i dont know why this has happened.  And as previous user mentioned it is impossible to send a SEND address as they dont genrate on Bitclient.. so either mtgox is holding my £200 for unknown reasons or the £200 is floating around in cyberspace?

It could only be my wallet i have withdrawn funds to EVER, although new address for each one, my wallet is only wallet ever to recieve BTC.

So what the heck is going on :( :(

Please help#

thanks kinda all

Let your blockchain in your client catch up. It may take a while to show up, and the blockchain can take a day or more to download in less than ideal situations. Are you using a Linux or Windows distro?

Where did you copied the address? Was from your mtgox account? If yes, then the bitcoins just made a round trip from your account back to it, no problem there only you just lost a few hours of your time. If no, then you have a problem, see my first question and please answer.

Dude, I really hope the money is just waiting for confirmation and will appear in your wallet.

But seriously, here's what I don't understand:
Please tell me that this is something that can be fixed and that my physical £200 isnt floating around in cyberspace, i work really hard for my money and I need this resolved.
How the F*CK do people mess around with money they can't afford to lose, doing crazy shit they clearly don't understand ???

(this is meant as a constructive warning, not to scoff)

As long as you don't exactly understand what you're doing, DON'T FUCK AROUND WITH LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY! (where "large" = anything you can't afford to lose)
Try with pennies first, until you thoroughly understand what you're doing.

Thanks for advice and i totally agree. This is why i started with small 100, 200, 300 transactons. the £1300 transactions went down fine the other was well. i am well-read on the whole procedure and studied it meticulously.  Somehow my BTC vanished :(

Im looking at that weblink and its nicely laid out etc, but i am familiar with the process so thanks for the link it will help for my tools :)

But what is a change address? this is why i emailed gox to ask if if they could reroute that to my wallet in stead of being stuck in limbo but they referred me to the forum to speak to "the bitcoin technical team who can help you resolve your missing btc issue as the transaction is finalized from our end)

you need to find out whom this address belongs to.

it SEEMS to be your mtgox deposit address (if thats the case you should contact mtgox support again: i dont know what mtgox does if you withdraw money from mtgox to mtgox)

have you backed up your wallet.dat and restored it recently? if thats the case it COULD be thats its your address (but then its lost...)

This is not a change address. You can view the transactions for that address here: http://blockchain.info/address/1FtWDqjyiuPVzh3tabdb7XoWnVX6gVEg1M

From what you have written, it seems that your bitcoins are exactly where they should be but you thought for some reason they should be visible in your wallet without having the blockchain downloaded.

I'll try to put this as nicely as I can:  You have some very WRONG impressions about the way bitcoin works. For your own sake, do some more reading on the subject before attempting any more transactions.

please dont apply it right now.

but i still think the problem is that you never owned that address.

if you go to your mtgox account to the add funds page. which bitcoin address does it show there?

there is now way to find the owner of a bitcoin address. you just have to remember. sorry.

Yes. Write a very short message, convert to binary, and send the binary numbers as coin to the address. If the owner is even a little into crypto, he or she will get the message.

Title: Re: BITCOIN TECHNICIANS PLEASE HELP!!!! URGENT"

This is very confusing. If that address isn't in your wallet, you've lost them.

Title: Re: BITCOIN TECHNICIANS PLEASE HELP!!!! URGENT"
Post by: edd on September 03, 2012, 03:05:54 PM
It could only be my wallet i have withdrawn funds to EVER, although new address for each one, my wallet is only wallet ever to recieve BTC.

You say you copied that address directly from your Mt. Gox history and that you've only sent coins to yourself, therefore the address must be yours.

The blockchain shows a successful transaction so Mt. Gox hasn't done anything wrong and, as you should know, the transaction is irreversible so they can't "take back" the funds and redeposit them into your Mt. Gox account.

You successfully sent about 28.25 bitcoins to this address about six days ago. If it isn't yours, you should remember who you sent them to.

There is no registry or database of who owns what address. Googling will sometimes reveal an address's owner, if, for example, it is a donation address (https://encrypted.google.com/search?q=1PC9aZC4hNX2rmmrt7uHTfYAS3hRbph4UN) that is posted on the web.

Bitcoin has two lists of addresses: "Receive Coins", which is where you create your own addresses for people to send money to you, and "Address Book", where you can store addresses that belong to other people for future sending. Both of these screens give you the ability to label addresses so you can notate who sent you coins, or remember frequently used addresses that you send money to.

If you used an address from "address book" as the address to withdraw MtGox Bitcoins, you have essentially sent money to someone else. You should look at your own past transactions to locate who the owner of this address is, since the address is likely in your address book because you previously sent Bitcoins to the address's owner.

You must understand that Bitcoin is not a company or an organization. It is open source peer to peer software. This forum is made of Bitcoin users of various knowledge levels. Bitcoins are transferred peer-to-peer, there is no central authority, and nobody can interfere with or undo Bitcoins that you have sent. MtGox is a company, but they have no way to get back Bitcoins after they were sent either.

In your Bitcoin software client, is the status in the lower right "up to date" (a green checkmark)? If the Bitcoin client still says that it is downloading blocks, than it may simply be that you have not downloaded information about the money transfer yet, and the address you used is actually yours.

Otherwise, there is no alternative, except to try to figure out who the actual owner of that address is (perhaps someone you previously sent money to in your address book), and contact them and explain that you accidentally sent them money - can they please send their new mystery money to you (and give them a real address from your "receive coins" address list).

I think you didn't answered. Why do you have that address in your wallet? Did you use it? When? So you can understand who's the owner.

I still don't get it? If he has the address from a withdraw entry in the gox history and he only ever withdrew to addresses he own, he either still owns the address or he lost it somehow.

Why did he re-download the blockchain? Maybe the guy deleted his ~/.bitcoin folder or moved it to somewhere else?

We need more info to analyse this and answers to at least the follwoing questions:

  • did you withdraw to that address before?
  • if no: how can it be in gox withdraw history?
  • if yes: did you receive those coins you previously sent to that address and are they still there?
  • why did your client re-download the blockchain?

It seems something wrong in MTGox.
I logged in to my account & try to see my account history.
I was shown many transaction around 30+ with BTC & USD...
I was looking & i did a refresh of page & only one transaction showed.
all other gone suddenly.
I think something wrong is going on MTGox.
In the below you see only 1 transaction & 10 minutes before i saw 30+ transactions.
Also i nowhere see the bitcoin address i withdraw, also nowhere the money i deposited in my account & also nowhere i withdraw my USD
I only saw "tid" only.
That too was 30+ & suddenly only 1 showing, even after enabling all in filters & 10+ times page refresh.
Some one deleting something or some hacking?

This thread has become an absolute cacophony of "help".

Here's the first, most basic question that might help to figure this out.  What happened to the original 28 BTC?

This link shows two transactions:

The first transaction was for 28.25140702 BTC on Aug-28-2012.

1) Yeah i purchased 28 coins!

OK, so do you still have those 28.25140702 coins?   If you do, then where (e.g., your own Bitcoin-qt client)?

Because wherever those 28.25140702 are now, that's where the 76.18247679 withdrawn on Aug-31-2012 went as well.

[Update: That 76.18247679 is worth a lot more than £200.  So there's some inconsistency here.

by accident I used Mt Gox Account to send my £200 of bitcoin to a SEND ADDRESS generated by my wallet.

Well bitcoin has no concept of "£200" so you'll want to describe precisely the Bitcoin withdrawal transaction .  On your withdrawal history in Mt. Gox you will see the date/time, the amount and the address of the withdrawal transaction.   Please copy that and paste it here. Here's the link to get that withdrawal history, once you've logged in:

I seem something wrong in MTGox.

What does this have to do with the problem being discussed? We've already established that the coins went to the address that was entered and are visible at blockchain.info.

simple thing, some thing wrong going on in MTGox.
If something goes wrong in an exchange, every transaction they do will form a mess.

As I said,  unseenbutheard7's bitcoins went exactly where he asked them to go. No issue on the Mt. Gox end.

Did you loose your bitcointalk password, too? Or why do you use a new account?
