Title: If bitcoin was accepted everywhere would you use it?
Post by: bitcointumbling.com on June 28, 2015, 02:27:41 PM
I am curious as to why and who would use bitcoin if it was accepted everywhere.

I know it would be great for everyone who has invested into bitcoin, but if it was just as accepted as money would you still be as inclined to use it?

If you have a business that involves bitcoin or you have some sort of exchange then I can see it being a great thing for demand, but why would you use it if you could just as easily use fiat money?

I'd love that, to be able to go to a supermarket and spend my coins would be amazing, same for paying bills and so on, it's really gratifying to be able to spend money knowing it's not going to be devalued like crazy any time soon.

Yes. My wife and I are going to Vegas next week. I am going to move a coin to my Mycellium phone app in hopes of being able to spend it, I'm sure there will be somewhere that will accept it.  :)

I will buy everything I need with bitcoin, like using fiat. It is an easy question. I think the better question is, how we use bitcoin in a country where bitcoin don't be accepted there.
But if it was accepted in everywhere, bitcoin has a problem with its volatility, which price of the stuff will change everyday and make us confused about it.

So answer is yes, I would use it.

If BTC was accepted everywhere we'd all be rich & it'd make no sense whatsoever to ever use fiat again.
If BTC was accepted everywhere the price would most likely go to the moon due to there being a limited supply of coins & we'd be able to live a very nice life without using fiat again (providing you have a nice BTC stash).

The ultimate dream is for BTC to be accepted everywhere.
To answer the question in the OP's header if BTC was used everywhere (providing the price reflected that it could be used everywhere) I'd buy property/real estate.

No doubt. I will use it for sure. If this really happened in future, btc prices may goes higher and higher . I am also trying to introduce the bitcoin to my home town so that more and more peoples can take interest in it and use them for their online business and real business too.

Many of us would have something like 90% net work in bitcoin if everyone accepted it other night.  You would have to use it to live your new richer lifestyle.  You cant spend anything when you are gone remember.

BTC will be accepted anywhere soon. It will be picked up by a major ewallet like Skrill for online transactions and they'll run with it.

Fiverr.com prospered greatly since it added BTC to its payment solutions.

the 'why' use it is because I'm sick and tired of central bankers getting rich off everyone else and inflating our money.

Right now the majority of people are not involved in BTC, so if it will be accepted everywhere we can have an advantage (no use exchange to buy/sell) and a disadvantage (a high number of people will know about BTC and they will start to trade with it, so faucets, sig. etc could be lost or pay a lower price). For me is better that the BTC spread start after 2020.

Some very interesting answers. I think as we come in to this crazy tech age as everything is becoming more focused on tech that it will find it's place in the future and I don't think everyone will use it, but I can see it becoming a popular thing in the future if nothing else comes along.

If this happen, nothing more easily than carrying bitcoin on virtual wallet ( so we can't get robbed ) and purchase anything with one simple device with fast transaction. Just need I think it need more than to happen but it's still not possible as long as we have faith on bitcoin...

If i could earn bitcoin i would spend it but i wouldnt buy bitcoin with the fees or markup involved in doing so just to use it because it would be cheaper to just use fiat. Presumably there is still an option to pay in fiat at the same price. I might do it once or twice for novelty value but ultimately i am going to choose the cheaper option.

this will begin happen by employers paying in bitcoin to all their workers and people will begin using it in the supermarket to the shopping mall.
but in general i would use it for everything no need to carry cash anymore, we would be able to pay anyone any amount just with our wallet on our phone or a plastic bitcoin card.

This question should be asked to those who have purchased bitcoins when the price was $1000 or $500. Their answer will definitely be no as bitcoins don't have a definite price but if the price was fixed or it wasa  recognized currency like USD/EURO, I would definitely use it as it would only benefit me and I would not have to worry about the future price. Currently it's like buying shares/investing in forex where there is no surity of the price.

Prices arent stable right now. It's fluctuating a lot. So it wouldn't be a wise thing to convert all my fiat currency to Bitcoins.

But assuming that the price of bitcoins are very much stable with lesser fluctuation I would actually convert most of my money to Bitcoin.

If bitcoin was then accepted anywhere i would actually use it everywhere. From restaurants to smaller shops. Just take out my smart phone and *ka-ching*

Not sure what you plan to buy for 300 sat, but you are not required to pay a single satoshi as fee. The only downside is that you have to wait longer than usual to get your tx confirmed.

The 10K satoshi is just what is recommended. No one forces you to actually use it. If you buy something from a shop you won't notice much regarding fees. Merchants got them covered. Especially when the amount is low enough, they will most likely accept it even without a single confirmation.

OP; For sure! It will be amazing to pay for every day things with Bitcoin.  ;D

I'll use them if the fees is reasonable. I am ready to pay $1 as a fee, if I purchase $100 worth of goods. But what bothers me is the confirmation time. Sometimes it takes up to 30 minutes for the transaction to get confirmed, making Bitcoins useless for retail shopping. This is my main concern, and if anyone is having a solution for it, then I am ready to cancel my credit card.  ;D

I think certain aspects of bitcoin might not work like what OP said about retail shops and such, but I hope it does go mainstream as that would be pretty cool to have my bitcoin on my phone and just not need to worry about any cash or cards in my wallet.

Title: Re: If bitcoin was accepted everywhere would you use it?

I would definitely use it as much as I could, yes FIAT is easier but only because we are all used to it. My monthly bills would all be paid in bitcoin, my fuel bill and wages I pay out.

The fees is something I din't think of earlier. Currently I am paying 12.5% taxes on all my bills/goods. Paying for them in BTC would be a relief. The confirmation of transactions is an issue though.

Of course, i will, it's very excited if bitcoin become the payment system which everyone accepted, a lot people will understand about the technology.

Yes maybe it easy to use fiat but with bitcoin, you don't need to pay more fees, taxes(several country use bitcoin taxes CMIIW), fast transaction than fiat.

If bitcoin is accepted everywhere, I would definitely buy use it and buy more. But I would not use it everywhere. Credit card is accepted almost everywhere and I still use cash because it's much faster and easier refund. When I have a choice of different payment methods, I would select which is the more convenient for me at that time.

If I could pay for everything and everyone would accept it, then I will immediately quit feeding my Bank (no more fees for you bastards), give them back my credit card, exchange 90% of my money to BTC.
There is no way that EVERYONE will accept it because it is impossible from the technical point of view. Not every place has access to internet. Even radio or satellite is out of the question for some places.

If my wage was entirely converted into Bitcoin, then I would happily use Bitcoin everywhere that accepts it. I would be amazed if I would be able to go to a grocery story or supermarket and pay for everything with Bitcoin. It would even be just as awesome if I could pay for an entire meal at restaurants with Bitcoin. However, I believe that this is a long ways off unfortunately.

The biggest problem towards mass adoption is that people's income is not received in bitcoin

In today's fiat money system, many large projects were setup with loan of fiat money, and then money trickle down level by level, so that every employee receive fiat money as income in the end

If you want to use bitcoin everywhere, then only the bitcoin accepting entrepreneurs have the ability to create bitcoin income (And those income are still small part of their main business), they have to actively spend the bitcoin as salary and purchasing from lower supplier to make it circulate

However, due to anti-inflation nature of bitcoin, everyone who get bitcoin will hoard at least half of them, thus after several hand changing, there is essentially nothing left in circulation. Because people are not forced to use bitcoin, when bitcoin is not enough for the transaction, they will consider some other alternatives. In fact, they are more likely to spend fiat money which is dropping in value all the time, and there is never a shortage of fiat money

Of course, many years down the road, when many people have hoarded enough bitcoins as saving, they will start to spend constantly, since their income will be coming from bitcoin's appreciation, that will be the mass adoption time

Surely your government would require the purchase to be made in your local currency with regards to real estate. Sure enough you could just make a bitcoin transaction in return for the keys from the current owner but if you don't pay the taxes your government expects it wont take long before they come knocking. I don't think we own any property, it all belongs to the state, we are just responsible for the upkeep and are afforded 'quiet enjoyment' with the assistance of the police and the courts if we adhere to the states rules.

The main reasons people don't use it as much:
1) Lack of merchants
2) Feels like you are paying with something that will be way more valuable in the future (hence a lot of people use it as a storage of wealth)
3) Hard to get (unless you directly convert fiat to BTC to buy stuff that you can already buy with fiat except in non regular situations, which beats the purpose of having it always ready and quick. This will be solved the day salaries are paid in BTC).

one could argue that bitcoin will not see a good price until it is accepted everywhere, so there is no reason to hold at that point, and also holding for what when you can pay directly in bitcoin? there is no reason for dumping anymore when bitcoin will achieve fully adoption

this was the whole point of bitcoin after all

Seriously, if you're into Bitcoin but not using it, you need to put some thought in exactly what development or series of events do you expect will cause Bitcoin to actually take of and go mainstream. If it ain't using it (and that's up to YOU, bitcoin fans) then what is?

absolutely yes. i would love to see some services especially online ones like Amazon, Ebay, (and personally like) steam to start accepting bitcoin and then i would be one of the first people who would buy with bitcoin there.
but on the other hand i will always have my investment for long term put aside because of the volatile price. and continue using it as an investment and do my exchanges for profit

If this were to happen it would be a dream come true for every bitcoiner but realistically for something like this to happen Bitcoin first of all would need to get legal status and it won't be without imposing certain restrictions, government won't give away their control to a decentralized currency. I think firstly we should convince more and more companies who conduct their business online to accept bitcoin, once we are able to achieve that then we can think of getting it accepted to local retail stores.

But to answer your question, I try to find shops with bitcoin when I am looking to buy something and if someday it is possible I would love to purchase everything with BTC.

Of course. I don't think there's any reason why I shouldn't. It is what everybody is waiting for.... for bitcoin to be accepted mainstream and it means going anywhere and you can actually spend your coins at every shop and outlet. The thing which I can imagine most convenient is when you are traveling to any country and that you don't need to carry different types of currency with you.

Transaction times are a bit too slow for mass adoption at the moment and we all here still need to get rich so it's more of an investment right now. After this I'm going to use my valuable satoshies for basically everything to stay away from controlled banking system..

How are transaction times slow? They're instant. Confirmation times don't really matter. Once you've sent your money it's as good as sent/recieved.

this is a common mistake to say transaction instead of confirmation time.

and i think that is an issue right now because a shop has to wait at least 5 minute and at worst half an hour to get confirmation (really receive the money in his pocket).

otherwise there is the risk of double spend of 0 confirmations.

Yes of course, I'd use bitcoin more than I use dollars.  :D But bitcoin would only get more accept if there's a bigger demand in the market, and everyone is willing to try this new piece of technology that they never seen before. I would for sure spend more time to invest in bitcoin if it was accepted in McDonald for example. That means I don't even have to carry a wallet when I go out, just a bitcoin debit/master card. I wish this would happen some day.  :)

I am curious as to why and who would use bitcoin if it was accepted everywhere.

Very few 'buyers of bitcoin' will ever use Bitcoin to make traditional purchases, even if it's accepted everywhere. And here's why ...

Not a single person on this forum has been able to provide an "intelligent" explanation as to why a consumer would willingly and regularly take an extra step to make a purchase. Why would my next door neighbor go to the trouble to buy BTC to make a purchase when he could have already made the same purchase using the debit card in his pocket.

What is his motivation for taking that extra step?

Now I have to pay withdraw fees and withdraw the money from bank when I'm going to use it, if I would able to use BTC directly things would be simpler and better for me

Don't try to make people think that BTC is only good for illegal stuff...

Not every seller is able to accept credit card because I myself would have no idea how to use it if I wanted to do small sells , but I know it would be expensive.

And Bitcoin makes possible people earn money by ways that would not be possible or would be too difficult before the Bitcoin era, and they need to spend the money sometimes{I myself face this problem}

It is easy to hold and use it's debit card.Bitcoin is completely have a saver side with our own risk(because of private key stolen or loss)

bears in mind that the OP is talking about a scenario where the wage is payed directly in bitcoin, so you don't need to buy any bitcoin, this is the real difference and that's the only advantage that fiat have over bitcoin right now

if it wasn't for that stupid advantages bitcoin would be a far better choice than any fiat garbage

So you don't think it's even mildly curious that when Silk Road is alive and well, no one is afraid to do illegal stuff with Bitcoin because they think they're anonymous, Pirate's Ponzi is running and illegal stock offerings are everywhere Bitcoin had a 15 billion market cap and the price was climbing daily. Then the sheriff came to town, killed all the train robbers, made them realize they're not anonymous, started applying the law to LBC and woke everyone up, Bitcoins market cap dropped to 3 billion and the price is more stable than a loaf of bread since that happened. Sorry, but that's a little too coincidental for me. The volume you see now is mostly normal legal trade. That sucks. I want Bitcoin to soar again because I'm holding a bunch of them.

A place for everything and everything in its place. There's nothing wrong with Bitcoin filling the illegal market niche. Let's face it, it's easy for everyone to buy legal things with their current payment method. They don't need to change. People are naturally lazy and if they don't need to do something they usually won't. The desire for illegal items gave people a real need to use Bitcoin. Isn't that what we all want?

I understand what is your point, however regards to the perfect future, there is nothing perfect in this world, perfection comes within us, it is based on our planning and intellectual thoughts, if we apply our sincere thoughts in any sectors, we could find the preferred future what we expect our life to be, hope you wouldn't take it as criticize rather than it is just my own thoughts regards to this.

Of course, who on here honestly wouldn't? At this  early stage bitcoin is already easier to use for many online transactions.

Even in person it is more secure than cash, and harder to lose if you take the security seriously.

Bitcoin is an important step towards the death of fiat currency, when people begin to wake up about the uselessness of manipulated and inflated paper currency they will turn to something else whether it is bitcoin, gold, or some other store  of value.

I don't think it will replace fiat, unfortunately people is too dumb and will use whatever is issued officially by governments. It will for sure tho, become the greatest way to preserve and move wealth outside of a government pegged currency, which means it will basically replace gold.

Personally YES. The main reason for that being that it puts me in control.

I went through a very bad patch with a business going under and battled to get back on my feet again. When the **** hit the fan my bank accounts were either frozen or closed without any notice and it took me close on a year and a half to get all my funds released. Cost me a bucket load in legal fees as well. When all was said and done the bank just said sorry and offered to open all my account again, that after I lived like a vagrant for almost 2 years.

In all that time I had to operate with cash only as I could not get a bank account opened. Best I could get was a basic savings account with either no debit card and or one that could not be used online and or for nothing else but retail purchases etc... so basically what I always called a 'kiddy' account.

Long story short: I no longer have to ask, beg and or plead with anybody to open an account and then wait days for approval. I just create a new wallet.

but i think by the time bitcoin is being accepted everywhere , the price is at an stable stage too. besides being accepted everywhere means that you can get paid in bitcoin too .
so you can earn bitcoin and spend it just like what we are doing now with fiat.

i need some more info about this

read this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_bitcoin_by_country, apparently it was a thing of the past(2014), were some third party were not allowed to do business with bitcoin exchange, but it seems not true anymore, situation is unclear...

Yes, but the plummer next door would not...

Without making security much easier and safer Bitcoin (or any other crypto) doesn't really have a snowball's chance downunder to even tickle FIATs.

Why not? It would be easier than paying with credit card. Everyone has a smartphones nowadays. You just need bitcoin wallet app and you are free to go - direct transfer from wallet to wallet.
Easier than purchasing dedicated terminal to receive debit/credit card payments.

Easy to use yes.

Easy to keep secure? Not so much...

I'm talking about the safety.

If my plummer and people like him (majority of the population) started using bitcoin now it would be a free for all for hackers etc.

Bitcoin needs some serious security inventions before cryptocoin has any chance.

Why would the plummer next door not accept it? And I don't think there's anything wrong with the security or safeness of bitcoin. Your coins safety and security is down to yourself but wallets will only get simpler and add more security features as time goes on.

I have no idea.. I don't know what decision I would make in an alternate timeline where everything could be different.

tho if bitcoin is suddenly accepted everywhere tomorrow, I know I will use it.

Yes, certainly I think the security will get much better in the future.

Currently, making cold wallets, and all kinds of other jumping through hoops to ensure some level of security is not really for the average joe (nor my plummer neighbor). So imo. currently the technology surrounding bitcoin is not at all ready for mass adoption.

It is at the most ready for nerd adoption ;)

Currently it is a bit the law of the jungle... when someone gets hacked and looses all their bitcoins the reaction in the community is "well, you didn't understand fully the procedures, so it was your own fault". Or in other words "Buhu too bad, so sad..move on and learn from it". Such an attitude will not work if this is supposed to be the standard means of payment for the 20 year old nurse, the janitor, the baker, .. and my neighbor..

Such a law of the jungle instills no trust - trust that people themselves can manage to keep their own funds safe. Most people doubt that they can - and rightfully so.

So until there is a solution to the security issues, cryptocoins are not really in with a chance to threaten FIAT.. nor should they be frankly because that would be playing with people's lifes at a time where there is a huge risk of a bad outcome.

When I have a choice of different payment methods, I would select which is the more convenient for me at that time. If bitcoin is accepted everywhere I would definitely  use it much more.

Well, we are talking about way into the future. Many people were saying very similar things you are saying about bitcoin about the internet in the 1980s. Bitcoin' security issues will probably be ironed out over time as any  major technology does. In the future, it is way more cost-effective to use your smartphone instead of a dedicated credit card machine.

Too bad the chances of bitcoin getting accepted everywhare is very slim  :P
There are some nation that already denied the usage of bitcoin (China is one of them)
But, if somehow Bitcoin managed to be accepted everywhere i would definitely use it :D

Yeah, It will take time that is accepted everywhere, I would surely use my bitcoins everywhere it is possible to make a payment, and honestly I have already started to make payments using bitcoins may be online shopping or online transfers  ;D
