Title: Best BTC wallet?
Post by: Nyau on July 11, 2015, 03:53:56 PM
Hi! I'm using Blockchain.info for 1 year and I'm not very happy with it, I see a lots of bugs, weak security etc..
What is the best wallet you know? All I want is to import my private keys and easy sending. I would also appreciate good security and 2FA.

there is no best BTC wallet. but there are worst wallets like online wallets.

it is totally up to you on how good you secure your wallet.

you can choose bitcoin core or armory if you dont have problem with downloading 40 GB of data.
or use an SPV wallet, i personally prefer Electrum. it is fast and easy to use, and you can make an offline version for more security.
or you can make a paper wallet for the best security and only holding bitcoin for long time.

I trust it with my personal funds at least, and in over 2 years of being paid solely in BTC, never a dollar stolen. :)

I am using coinbase, they have android app if you want to use also on the phone, you can access also the web from web browser.
It's a web wallet if you want to continue so.
It also has 2FA that will protect your wallet and transactions.
You also can sign message(which i learned recently).
You decide.
Good Luck.

ohh, really depends, if you are looking for web wallet, desktop wallet or some smartphone/tablet wallet. just specify on which platform and OS you are willing to use the wallet and you will get much better recommendations here.

yes, electrum is good, anyway, is quite tricky to install it (https://electrum.org/#android), because of this I recommend mycelium for android. for desktop, stick with electrum..

You should really try Electrum. Once you tried it, you will never use any other wallet.
It is simple the best wallet ever made, please give it a try.

There are different wallets, and each is good in its own way.  Even online wallets can be good for small money.  I suggest you try out a few, and put in some dust to see how you like it.  My favorite is electrum, but I cant say that it is the best.

Simply stay away from Online wallets , they are the worst . (same goes for exchange websites ,don't keep them so long there) because all need to happens is them getting hacked and you will lose all .
I'd advice to go with Bitcoin Core, yes you will have to download the full blockchain . and here is how to import the private keyson it : https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/How_to_import_private_keys_in_Bitcoin_Core_0.7%2B

...

I did not really like MultiBit as my wallet, I stopped using it a year or so ago.  It took too long to update when I did use it (esp. when used infrequently)..., it sometimes took TWO HOURS to update.  Ugh.

For small amounts, I am OK with blockchain.info's wallet.  I never keep (for long) more than, say, BTC0.5 there.  blockchain.info does offer their SharedCoin mixing service, which for me is a nice plus.

I really like the hardware wallets as LiteCoinGuy above says, his thread is excellent for learning other people's experiences.

I am happy with both the Trezor and the Ledger Nano hardware wallets.

All wallets are not "safe"*. I choose Mycelium in Mobile and Coins.ph as my online wallet provider .I only used online wallet when I like to cashout my btc in real money.

Core is a very good wallet, but requires the whole blockchain... Armory is very good, but also requires the whole chain, and it is only useful if you're more an advanced user. Electrum is SPV and really good, you should try it. Avoid online wallets!

It is simple the best wallet ever made, please give it a try.

I can't import my keys to Electrum, or I can't find how.

The objective in electrum isn't importing keys: it's entirely switching to a seed that can be memorized. Your previous keys will not be included in a new seed. So just create a seed, keep it safe and transfer your Bitcoins there.

Try wallet32, it's the best btc wallet i have used so far and i have about 7 differant btc apps, only problem is no signed message option.

Mycelium would have to be one of the easist to use i have found and pairs great for cold storage, i also have the mycelium entropy to help with better security.

I use Coinjar for btc purchases and cash out but like Coinbase you dont control your own private keys so i never leave btc there for long.
And as others have said, never leave your btc on an exchange.

Since you ask this week, I'd say the answer is two fold:
  • A wallet that will suggest a TxFee that has some hope of succeeding in the current congestion.
  • A wallet that lets you customize the fee you pay for TXs base on the fee suggestions

Only one I know that does both is Bitcoin-Qt 0.10.2

Might not be the answer you were looking for.

No best wallets. There are just better wallets that fit your needs.  Bitcoin-Core provides best security and utility. You can use it as your main wallet! Blockchain is convenient and easy to use. You can use for your daily spending!

I have also been using electrum for a while too, is one of the best solutions out there, i have a buddy that did a few plugins for me for price tickers and price alarms and is pretty cool what people could do with the plug in support.

To be straight forward with that question:
There is no "Best" Wallet.
There will always be a wallet coming out and the updates or revision will always be better than it's predecessor.
But if I had to pick one I would say coinbase as so many others have said. They haven't really changed the format or layout of their site, because their isn't much to change if it already works well.

There's no good or bad wallet, there's only good or bad choices.

Now you can try an online wallet and store your bitcoins there. That will probably be the baddest decision you will ever make.

And you can try some of the most leading paper wallets and store your bitcoins offline. That's pretty much the right way to go.

I don't think anyone has shared this link yet -> https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet

This might help you select a wallet based on your needs. There's no one best wallet, but a lot are better than others. And a lot requires some protocol to be considered "better than the rest" and if you're not willing to follow that protocol that particular wallet won't work well for you.

There is another option.

As many have already said, there is no real good or bad wallet, however.....

I personally believe in the fact that you should trust nobody when it comes to bitcoins just as with money. So in my opinion, a good wallet is one where you have full control over the wallet and the private keys contained within that wallet. If you don't it means that you are putting your trust in somebody else and we all know how that turns out most of the time.

Personally I work with MyCelium and paper wallets. Many do not like paper wallets or find them a pain to work with but for me it offers the best security and it's actually very easy and straightforward to use. I just import a paper wallet and send what I don't need back to the next paper wallet in line so the bulk of my coins are always in a paper wallet.

I have many desktop wallets and a few online wallets. I also have a ledger hardware wallet for my hoard. I use multi it for small amounts and occasionally take micro payments to my online capo and coin awe.
There are so many free wallets out there, what's to stop you trying them all?

I absolutely recommend you do invest in a hardware wallet though. One theft can ruin you.

Multibit will charge you extra fees to use their wallet. in other ways they force you to pay fee to the wallet devs in order to be able to send your transactions.
Electrum is much better.

Go to the menu "Wallet" -> "Private keys" -> "Import".

Very easy, no problem.

Only thing you whould be aware of is that you cannot retrive the imported private key later using your master seed (obviously). But you will also get a warning about this. All it means is that if you import private keys, then keep a backup of them somewhere.

These are more secure and recommended wallet, Secondly see the above Note by admin

Whatever Bitcoin wallet you choose, it is important to protect it from hacking.
By encrypting your passwords, backing up your wallet, and possibly using multi-signature you can ensure safety and security of your Bitcoins.

As far as security goes, stay away from online wallets. They have the right to close your account without reason and disclose your information to any 3rd party law enforcement for whatever reason. I just use the Bitcoin desktop client and keep the BTC I need secure in an offline unit. Pretty much fool proof.

you have many options for bitcoin wallet and almost all of them can be the best (most secure) wallet as long as you make them secure enough.

if you can run a full node wallet and have no problem with downloading the whole blockchain, you can choose bitcoin-core or Armory.

if you want a light wallet (SPV) so that you don't have to download the whole blockchain you can choose one of the SPV wallets like MultiBit or Electrum (i like Electrum more)

any kind of wallet you choose , you have to protect it by password encryption, using it offline if possible, or install linux if you like it which is more secure than windows.

or if you want to keep your coins for long term in a secure place , create a secure paper wallet on an offline computer and send your coins there.

I like electrum because it's pretty simple.  Well I say simple but it's not really a walk in the park either.  But comparatively, i'd say it's pretty hassle-free.  My best advice is to shop around and see what works for you.  Some people swear up and down by one or another but you are your own best judge.

me too like electrum.
But I also like armory.
Electrum is easy to use and no need to download a 30gb block chain.

In my Opinion, it is safer for you to have your coins on bitstamp than in your local wallet; at least they protect your coins with 2fa security.

The best wallet options 2 me are:

Online Wallet : Coinbase , XAPO, Kraken, Blockchain

Mobile : Mycelium, Mycelium, Mycelium

Desktop : Armory and Bitcoin Core

Guys

I am using electrum and went to my private keys to import a paper wallet only to find that the import tab is missing? I only have the "sweep" and "export" tabs? How do I get the import tab?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Multibit, does pretty much what you want to do, lots of wallets, import-exports everything.
I suggest Linux as an OS. I personally am loving it so far.

Tried many but finally settled on Trezor.

Have a couple of wallets on Trezor which are all linked into Electrum on desktop and MyCelium on mobile.

Must say that I sleep far better at night since moving everything to the Trezor and the setup I have now is convenient and its very easy to do transactions both from desktop and or mobile while on the go.

I would highly recommend a Trezor, especially now that they have a special going again (just after I bought mine, go figure  :D)

If you're looking of an online wallet, have a server / VPS, and are capable of installing Wordpress, then I'd highly suggest http://synala.com/

I personally even trust it with my own funds, and Synala is what I use for my wallet.  Why trust a 3rd party with your money, when you can easily and securely setup everything yourself for online payments?

If needed, we can offer professional installation for 0.2 BTC.  Just contact me if needed.

Here’s a list of 10 different Best BTC Wallets for secure Bitcoin storage.

Bitcoin Core
Bitcoin Core is the original Bitcoin wallet, originally developed by Satoshi Nakamoto and continually updated by the core Bitcoin development team. While it doesn’t have the advanced features of Armory or the social aspect of Hive, Bitcoin Core is probably the most scrutinized and worked-on wallet out there, making it a trustworthy choice.

One thing to be aware of is the fact that Bitcoin Core is a fully fledged node of the Bitcoin network. So it requires the entire blockchain to run. Bitcoin Core is available on Windows, Linux and Mac, and is also available as a Ubuntu PPA.

Multibit
Multibit is a lightweight software wallet. As with most software wallets, Multibit encrypts your private keys locally (or on a USB stick). One useful characteristic of Multibit is that it doesn’t need to download the entire blockchain to access, send and receive funds. Multibit connects directly to the Bitcoin network and downloads only a small part of the blockchain, making it very fast to use.

Since Multibit doesn’t download the entire blockchain, it also takes up a lot less space on your hard drive, which can be important in some situations. Multibit has also been translated into more than 35 languages and is available on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Electrum
Electrum is another lightweight Bitcoin wallet in the vein of Multibit. Electrum supports deterministic wallets or, in other words, generating multiple wallets from one seed. It also lets you sign and create transactions offline and export what it calls a "root public key", which lets compatible applications monitor your wallet. You can also import and export private keys from other Bitcoin wallets.

Like Multibit, Electrum lets you perform Bitcoin transactions without having to download the entire blockchain, making transactions a lot faster. Electrum uses a network of servers to achieve this. Electrum is available for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android.

Hive
Hive is a Bitcoin wallet targeted at new users, with some interesting features. For one, Hive has an instant messaging style interface that lets you send and receive Bitcoins quickly and easily. It also has an integrated application platform and comes with some built-in apps that give you easy access to some of the more popular Bitcoin-related services available.

Hive even has an SPV backend to speed up starting time, as well as support for the Tor network for increased anonymity. You can also schedule wallet backups onto Dropbox and Time Machine. Hive is only available on Mac OS X, but is also coming to Android in the near future.

Armory
Armory is one of the most feature-rich and secure software Bitcoin wallets available today. Armory offers three different user modes: Standard, Advanced and Developer. Some of it’s security features include a graphical keyboard to protect against keyloggers, support for deterministic wallets, offline transactions and extensive cold storage options, including fragmented paper wallets.

Offline transactions significantly increase your wallet’s security and protects it from most security risks. It requires the official Bitcoin Core wallet, since Armory doesn’t have any networking features. Armory is available on Windows, Mac and Linux. It’s also available as a Ubuntu PPA.

Blockchain Wallet
Blockchain’s wallet has a few interesting security features designed to overcome some of the security risks inherent in online wallets. For example, Blockchain implements client-side AES encryption, protecting your wallet from a server side hack. It also has support for offline transactions, a double encryption feature and two factor authentification.

Blockchain not only lets you back your wallet up automatically onto Google Drive or Dropbox, but also lets you download your wallet manually. Blockchain also performs regular off-site server side backups every hour. There’s even a mobile wallet version of Blockchain for Android.

Coinbase
Coinbase is an online Bitcoin account, somewhat similar to PayPal. Coinbase also has a built-in Bitcoin exchange where you can buy and sell Bitcoin, and lets you send and receive money directly to and from email addresses. Coinbase is a centralized operation and stores all its Bitcoins on-site, but claims to store 85% of its Bitcoins in offline cold storage.

There are potential security and trust issues with Coinbase, especially since its operators have control over all Bitcoins, but the fact that it’s been heavily backed by prominent venture capital firms makes it less likely that Coinbase will run away with users’ Bitcoins. There is also a Coinbase Android app.

Coinkite
Coinkite is somewhat similar to Coinbase, in that it provides plenty of Bitcoin-related services such as Bitcoin debit cards and payment terminals alongside an online wallet feature. Coinkite uses BIP32 Heirarchical Deterministic (HD) wallets, which are stored in a custom Hardware Security Module (HSM) that is apparently isolated from the Internet. You can even request audit reports from Coinkite.

In the case of closure or failure, Coinkite has promised that it will publicize a symmetric key that contains all the extended private keys that have been distributed to Coinkite users. This will allow users to reclaim their funds from Coinkite, if the service shuts down.

BitAddress Paper Wallet
BitAddress is a web service that generates randomized public and private keys that you can use to receive, spend and store your Bitcoin. The big appeal of BitAddress is that it can create paper wallets. Paper wallets are a particularly secure form of cold storage, since the private key is only stored on a piece of paper and not on the Internet or in any form of software.

Bear in mind that you’ll have to import your private key into some form of digital wallet, if you want to perform transactions. Thus, it’s probably best to use a paper wallet as a complementary form of Bitcoin storage alongside a software or online wallet.

Pi-Wallet
Pi-Wallet is currently the only commercially available hardware Bitcoin wallet. The Pi-Wallet is basically a Raspberry Pi running a software Bitcoin wallet, namely Armory. As such, it has all of Armory’s features in addition to a few perks that only a hardware wallet of this type can provide. For instance, the Pi-Wallet doesn’t have direct Internet access, adding another layer of protection.

The Pi-Wallet is also portable, and as it’s built on a Raspberry Pi that makes it much less susceptible to viruses and Trojans that can be used to steal Bitcoin from your average Windows computer. The site also has instructions on building your own Pi-Wallet.

That depends. There are people that want that their bitcoin are in their hands. For this they prefer the bitcoin qt core wallet which is installed in your computer and then the bitcoin are stored there. Must told that every send of bitcoins from that kind of wallet must be associated with fees paid from the sender (owner of the bitcoins and of this wallet). There are other people that prefer web based bitcoin wallet in which the bitcoin are in the hands of the thirds part even then they have the private keys in they hands (that prevent the steal of bitcoins from these third parties). One of the best of that kind of wallet (the best for me) is coinbase. At coinbase the fees of transactions are paid from coinbase. There are nay and yes for every variant but those are the most important.

Don't store your all amount on web wallet or exchanger, better to use cold wallet or desktop wallet.

They not impossible if they collapse.

Agree.

Coins.ph plays a major role here in country because they have an option of "instantly" withdrawing our bitcoins in an ATM using their instant payout option even without the ATM card . Good for emergencies. So I recommend coins.ph for those Pinoys out there when you want to withdraw your coins into fiat. But don't store much coins there. Only used it for withdrawing purposes.

For cold wallet, there are lots of suggestions here that we can used. For Mobile, I preferred Mycelium.

Because we developed it. :)

I'm a prime example of who Synala is perfect for.  I need to accept payments online, but I don't want to trust blockchain.info with my funds, or any other 3rd party wallet service for that matter, especially the ones that charge fees.  I'd much prefer to be 100% in control of my own funds, which is what Synala allows for.  Just look at how many people have had funds stolen out of their blockchain.info wallet.  I've been accepting BTC for over 2 years, and not once have I had a single satoshi stolen.

Think of it as Electrum, but for online payments.  Electrum is an excellent desktop wallet, whereas Synala is an excellent wallet you install on your server to accept payments online.

Because it is easy to synchronize after a new installation, merely any or two.
If Bitcoin qt would also have same functionality then I would have switched to it till now.

If you're interested in trying out other wallets, client wallets I'd recommend are Bitcoin Core, Multibit and Armory.

Bitcoin Core for the standard look of a Bitcoin wallet, with simple buttons to press. Fairly point-and-click.

MultiBit has it's own issues, so I'd recommend it less, but this is probably the easiest to use wallet I've seen.

Armory is the hardest of the three to use, however it has multiple security layers that are great for storing large amounts of Bitcoin. This one is my personal favorite, if you don't mind having to set things up for a little while.

I don't know a whole lot about other online wallets other than coinbase and blockchain, so take any online wallet opinions I have with a grain of salt.

the only feature i wish multibit had would be the ability to spend from specific addresses; the current multibit 0.5.18 doesnt let you do this, although i havent checked out multibit HD yet. secondly, coinbase is not a wallet. if you make the argument that "i can put my coins there so its a wallet" youre wroong, if you do not control your own private keys, you do not control your money, and therefore it is not a wallet. i would also advise not using blockchain.info as they are an inept company that accepts spoofed and false transactions into their ledger.

For most of the average bitcoin users, i believe that wallets like Electrum are the best option available.

Main reasons are :

- It's lightweight and extremely simple to use
- It's local, and you are in possession of your private keys
- It doesn't require entire blockchain to be downloaded

For most of the people that don't care about running a full version like Core, it should provide everything that an average user needs, but that's just my opinion in the end..

Electrum for SPV wallets because of its easy to use wallet and interface that sure is newbie-friendly. When it comes to online wallet, I prefer using Xapo than that of blockchain.info, mainly because of its many bugs and whatnot.

When storing large amounts of bitcoin, I use a paper wallet. I generate it via bitaddress.org and generate the keys offline to ensure that the security of my paper wallet isn't compromised. ;)
