Post by: Sakarias-Corporation on August 05, 2015, 05:05:54 PM
i'll keep this short, i've made a cipher, anyone who can crack it will receive 0.56 Bitcoins. Depending on how long it will take you i might increase the reward over time :) (timer 30 Days, after that i'll decide what to do)

same here, I'd let others crack it too, I think cracking that first one is part of the puzzle

Haha, I had almost the same thing - HTTP://TEXTUPBONKER.COM/NRYBF.

I also tried textupbonder, which is a little bit closer to textuploader, I guess. I did consider the "n" was maybe an "a" also, but I was so set on the b! No way I would have realized it was meant to be an L, because I was going off of the p.

The Morse code translates to an imgur link (HTTP:// I.IMGUR.COM/6RD8PC7.GIFV, I think?), but the link doesn't work, so I guess I don't have it totally right.

I'm thinking all of the rest of the lines must be important, not just the Morse code line.

Decoded the morse code and the base64 encoding.  Still working on the remaining codes.

Im incredibly bad at things like this. I'll let some one else solve it but will stay around to see how it turns out. 0.1 is not enough for me to invest time on this sorry, maybe if I was more gifted at solving puzzles I would do it.

Point X: (between 5: and 6:) leads to nothing..

Ornhgvshy Dhbgr. fnqyl n qvfgenpgvba m

Shifting the alphabet 13 spaces leads to the following:

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to."

Beautiful Quote. sadly a distraction z

After the ISBN numbers, there appear to be references to chapters in a book. Googling returns the following passages:

Quote
8(11)-4-
Revalation  - Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "HOLY, HOLY, HOLY IS THE Lord GOD ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS, AND IS, AND IS TO COME."

Quote
54(2)-1-
Koran - And if they see a miracle, they turn away and say, "Passing magic."

any luck on the youtube video or just a dead end?

Anyone else notice only certain letters/numbers in parenthesis?  I'm stuck.

Thanks, i copied the http://https://i.imgur.com/6RD8PC7.GIFV
and removed the second //HTTP: then i made all letters Lowercase. since Imgur uses lower and uppercase letters. so what i got was this;
https://i.imgur.com/6rd8pc7.gifv   its the right link but as i said, Imgur is ''case sensitive'' so you have to change the letters to Either Upper case letters or lowercase letter.

i went into Imgur just to see how the Adresses there looks like. i took a random picture and got this http://imgur.com/gallery/b6MHs6m
Which is small letter then big letter big letter small letter small letter. i just followed the pattern of that adress to see if i could hit it right. and i sure did. after some tests i finally got to https://i.imgur.com/6rD8Pc7.gifv

sorry for thr writing, just took my medication...but my Cipher cracking is on top :)

People that might have spent a few hours trying different things probably don't want to share their work for someone else to pick up for free and solve the puzzle before them.  I for one, am terrible at these kinds of puzzles. Good luck!!

I was guessing this would have been done within a hour after originally posting it.
Congrats on a successful and interesting puzzle so far.
Can't wait to see who wins it and what the total pot will be at that point.

Would make more sense if it said "tried so hard" instead of "cried" so hard..

I have to say I also thought about just sending a btc address to that email, hope it works for you.

The auto reply you got when sending an email to cipher1337 contains some new files. I think they need to be converted to jpg, but I don't know how to make jpgs from HEX code..

Just merge the 3 hex sources, paste into a hex editor and save as JPG.
You will get an image of the last supper.

Is there something extra in the picture compared to original painting or is it just my tired eyes?

I found an identical image in an image search, so I assume it wasn't edited.
On the youtube link, respecting the original letter-case, would give something like httPs://www.yOutube.cOM/watch?v=MaeWS??2-?w, which doesn't help much as there are over 250k possibilities.

What is more interesting is the increasing bounty on this piece. Without monetary incentive I doubt there will be many people trying to solve this amazing puzzle.
I like this because it reminds me of early Cicada 3301 puzzles. I thought that it was pretty easy at first but I know see how I was wrong, some parts are haaaard :/.

You still would need it to start with a 5 right? and private keys are 51 characters? We are then missing a character (or we switch the 5 and 2 or what was the hint on that?)

They could also start with a K or L if they are uncompressed. Also, some of them might not be 5 characters. I think number 1 is more than 5.

Has anyone figured out number 6 yet?

Maybe the 51th character is the z from this quote?

I'm guessing we are all trying too hard..

There are several references to keeping it simple:

"did you enjoy the fake cipher?"
"Don't make it harder then what it really is."
"Oh dear, I do wish I hadn't cried so much."

and

Alice in Wonderland (it is all just a dream?)

Maybe it is just in front of our eyes?

"Change position of 5 an 2 and you will get it much easier or maybe I'm just fooling you again. You never know"

If you ignore the numbers it says "Change position of an and" - Is there an "and" somewhere that can be switched around?

 "The Last Supper" from left to right:

    Bartholomew
    James Minor
    Andrew
    Judas
    Peter
    John
    Jesus is, of course, in the middle
    Thomas
    James Major
    Philip
    Matthew
    Thaddeus
    Simon

4(1)x5(2)x1(1)x1(2)x*6* __-__

name(character)        jeBa6
character(name)        tsBj6

just guessing !!

I figured out the beginning I think. The whole cipher seems to be a private key, although I am missing a few characters.

Disregard 1 because
Quote
REPLACE 1 WITH 2. did you enjoy the fake cipher ?
Then number 2 becomes the front. The hint of number 2 is
Quote
2hee5
If we
Quote
Change position of 5 an 2
then we get
Quote
5hee2
which looks like the beginning of a private key.

I think "REPLACE 1 WITH 2" means to swap the 2 positions.  1's answer is 2CkB3

then we get
Quote
5hee2
which looks like the beginning of a private key.
The second character in an uncompressed private key has to be one of H,J,K. If we use 'XoXo' from the hint to indicate case, we get 5HeE2.

i don't think it's even 5hee2, i'm certain of the ''5 and 2'' ofcource.

If you decode 5hee2 with the same shift cipher as the hint, it comes out as 5juu2, and 5Juu2 would also be a valid start for a private key. Also, part of the hint was "UU EqUAl SmAll lETTErS", which further points in this direction.

Bingo. I think that's it. the hint is actually all upper case "UU EQUAL SMALL LETTERS"

That makes sense. So that string is probably the start. Maybe the "replace 1 and 2" hint also meant to swap 1 and 2? So it starts with 5Juu22CkB3

Did someone clam the 0.2 BTC prize for solving the puzzle or is it still live?
And more important, did OP pay the winner or scammed-away with the money?
Dont want to spend a lot of time solving it it has alreay been done.
Nice game though.

It's all still there. The puzzle seems to come out to the private key for the address. It would be nice if OP could add some more to the prize as this has gone on for a few days already.

I think 0.2 is quite a good reward for solving a puzzle already.

I think we are close, but I'm out of ammo at the moment.

Just a thought, but worth floating. In Puzzle (9), he uses 'then' rather than 'than'. Could just be a spello, could be saying to switch the e in the private key for a, or vice versa (notably the current suggestion has both e and a in it).

Edit: did some author research and came across this. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1129812.msg11983011#msg11983011
Seems this was a false alarm.

This puzzle is especially tough because private keys are a bunch of random letters and numbers. There’s no error checking in the solution, so you can easily come up with multiple answers to each part and you wouldn’t know which is correct.

I can confirm I did not and have not.

The problem is surmised above. Just too many possibilities and no way of knowing if each mini puzzle is correct. Would be useful to get some ideas on which ones might be wrong and which are definitely right.

To be honest, without any error checking, I am not able to go further. As any answer could be totally wrong. And we could just be barking up the wrong tree trying to think of another solution when we already have the right one.

OP, I think it would be useful for you to confirm when we have found the right solution for any question.

UPDATE: I tried moving things around, and cutting out the extra groups of 5 letters in the google docs 150 posts ago, I got 5Juu22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt, which seems to be a private key for 12DpX8duvEPZ1aDFB22dFinUeDYirtfQoj, but it has no bitcoins on it, so im guessing we move some things around.

I could make something out of it after some trials, but I also found the same privkey for what Yoshi24517 found: 12DpX8duvEPZ1aDFB22dFinUeDYirtfQo no bitcoins in it though. Ugh I guess I couldn't solve this one alone. Anyone else here got some pieces of clues you found? We can stick our ideas together and split the winnings between us. ;)

There are so many possibilities if we even have the case of some letters wrong.. We need to be sure the parts of 5 are correct. Than order is just a matter of trying.

I got 5Juu22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt, which seems to be a private key for 12DpX8duvEPZ1aDFB22dFinUeDYirtfQoj,

I also found the same privkey for what Yoshi24517 found: 12DpX8duvEPZ1aDFB22dFinUeDYirtfQo

I think you are both mistaken.  5Juu22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt is NOT the private key for 12DpX8duvEPZ1aDFB22dFinUeDYirtfQoj.  It is not a valid WIF private key at all:

I just plugged it into my wallet for blockchain.info and it gave me that. I have figured out at least that there are 120 different possibilities for the private key. I've already gone through 50 of them and so far they all lead to bitcoin wallets with no bitcoins in them. I'm still checking though. There may be more possibilities. I just don't know.

Is there no way to brute force the combination? Maybe with the tool that was posted before? Should be easier than doing it manually..

I could quickly script something to do the rest, and additionally handle any other possible inputs fairly quickly, for a small share if your current clues do find it. I can either run the code on my machine, or send it to you as source code you can run on your own machine.

I tried the basic key 5Juu22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt with replacing each character with each possible letter, e.g.:
5J1u22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt <--first try
5J2u22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt <-- second try
5J3u22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt <-- ...
...
5Jyu22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt
5Jzu22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt
5Ju122CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt
5Ju222CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt
...
5Juz22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt

...
5Juu22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTz <-- last try

then with two letters:
5J1122CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt
...
5J1u12CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt
...

No luck!  :(

Then tried also all toggling case combinations for up to three characters:
5Juu22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt <-- basic key
5JUu22CkB3eAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6rqwwbo5jeBa6dRNoTt <-- example

Again ... no luck. :(

Finally, I tried every possible private key starting with:
5Juu22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo5(11 chars missing at the end)= 5811/232 = rougly 5 800 000 000 combinations

Total Keys: 7*5811:232 currently tried = rougly 40 700 000 000 combinations

I think at least one answer in the document is horrible wrong.

Also, what program did you use to test the private keys?
I was using a self made program which directly loads the OpenSSL library and does (simplified pseudocode):
Code:
function tryBreak(start) {
  trial = EC_POINT_MUL(G, start)
  for i = 0 to 5817656405 { //This is just for showing how it works - I did some optimization of course (eg. checking many private keys at once)
    if ripemd160(sha256(trial)) = "7d1646c1d03dcaad05ffaf3d05590a87a957c352" {
      alert("Key found! " + trial)
      break
    }
    trial = EC_POINT_ADD(trial, G)
  }
}
thread[0] = new Thread(
  @tryBreak(base58toHexIgnoreChecksum("5Juu22CkB3EAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo511111111111"))
)
thread[1] = new Thread(
  @tryBreak(base58toHexIgnoreChecksum("5Juu22CkB3NAaBpEcyH9dypNhDN8fZgh6Rqwwbo511111111111"))
)
...

So basically, what Im seeing here is 5Juu22CkB3-----EcyH9dypNh-----gh6RQwwbo5----------- so far for the private key. That means we should probably look at #'s 3,6,9,and 10 to see what went wrong.

Just found something that might be the clue from the clue ''sometimes going back will refresh your memory''.

Hope this helps!

I will be very happy if the winner is kind enough to share the prize  ;D

So then if that was right, we would have 5Juu22CkB3-----EcyH9dypNh-----gh6RQwwbo5ueBa6------.
But if there is a "2" missing from "CkB3", then that was intentionally left out, unless that was a typo.

Well then, now we have:

5Juu2CkB3-----EcyH9dypNh-----gh6RQwwbo5ueBa6------

We need to figure out which section has one that needs an extra space. Because now we don't know which ones need 6 characters.

Also, I don't think http://textuploader.com/ar0eb is supposed to be hex code (don't get mad at me if I am restating the obvious), because it just translates to a whole bunch of gibberish.

There's no reason to believe that particular image has anything to do with this. But have at it:

Well then, now we have:

5Juu2CkB3-----EcyH9dypNh-----gh6RQwwbo5ueBa6------

We need to figure out which section has one that needs an extra space. Because now we don't know which ones need 6 characters.
Then number 10 can be 7 letters and the last character of the Private key is E
That makes sense. Now we have 5Juu2CkB3-----EcyH9dypNh-----gh6RQwwbo5ueBa6------E. We should figure out what #3 is so we can fix it.

Just to clarify, I think the OP has not confirmed that #9 is ueBa6. It may be incorrect.

The OP had another competition with a picture like this. There was a small "6" hidden in the top corner of the room in the painting. The passphrase was the 6th guy on the table. I can't remember the name though. Maybe it was Peter or something. (This was the actual original last supper painting)

E Equals 5.

maybe E is just E

I say it's much deeper than that the numbers sequence seem like they are a gps/phone something like that .
the (E) is not an E or else he would have wrote "4 7 25 1 27 27 4" or "4 7 25 1 27 27 5"
is not a 5 or else he would have wrote "4 7 25 1 27 27 (5)" or "4 7 25 1 27 27 E" by equality
The E could mean E if the numbers mean something else other than suggested in the google doc
We should rethink our chain of though used in first answers

Have fun  ;D ;D

Probably to cover the fee for the winner so that the winner would actually get 0.2 BTC.

Also, OP, anymore hints for us yet?

Softcover = Paperback
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paperback (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paperback)
Quote
A paperback (also known as softback or softcover) is a type of book characterized by a thick paper or paperboard cover, and often held together with glue rather than stitches or staples. In contrast, hardcover or hardback books are bound with cardboard covered with cloth; although more expensive, hardbacks are more durable. Inexpensive books bound in paper have existed since at least the 19th century in such forms as pamphlets, yellowbacks, dime novels, and airport novels.[1] Modern paperbacks can be differentiated by size. In the US there are "mass-market paperbacks" and larger "trade paperbacks". In the UK, there are A-format, B-format and the largest C-format sizes.[2]

Paperback editions of books are issued when a publisher decides to release a book in a low-cost format. Cheap paper, glued bindings, and the lack of a hard cover contribute to the inherent low cost of paperbacks. Paperbacks can be the preferred medium when a book is not expected to be a major seller, or in other situations where the publisher wishes to release a book without putting forth a large investment. Examples include many novels, and newer editions or reprintings of older books.

Since hardcovers tend to have a larger profit margin, many publishers try to balance the profit to be made by selling fewer hardcovers against the potential profit to be made by selling more paperbacks with a smaller profit per unit. First editions of many modern books, especially genre fiction, are issued in paperback. Best-selling books, on the other hand, may maintain sales in hardcover for an extended period in order to reap the greater profits that the hardcovers provide.

192 (7)-1 should be h. See the pdf file again, page 192 should be the page 208 in the pdf.

Page 8 = Page 24 in the pdf, therefore, Page 192 should be Page (192+16) = 208.

I ran this overnight.   I woke up to a 350+ gb unmanageable text doc and the script was still running.    If someone gets one more letter, I can run it and it will be easier.  Here is the code I used"

sys.stdout = open('c:/combo.txt', 'w')
for ele in  itertools.product("0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ",repeat=6):
    print("".join(ele))

I ran this overnight.   I woke up to a 350+ gb unmanageable text doc and the script was still running.    If someone gets one more letter, I can run it and it will be easier.  Here is the code I used"

from itertools import product
import itertools
import sys
sys.stdout = open('c:/combo.txt', 'w')
for ele in  itertools.product("0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ",repeat=6):
    print("".join(ele))

Note, you are including the letters I, O, l, and the number 0 which are all invalid base58check characters.

It also doesn't make much sense to store all the iterations in a file.  Instead it would be better to generate each potential key and then verify the checksum.  You only need to store those keys that have a valid checksum (which should be approximately 1 out every 4,294,967,296 keys generated).

You don't even really need to store the keys with a valid checksum.  You could just compute the address for each key that has a valid checksum as you find it and see if the address matches the winning address. If it does, then you are done.

Honestly, coding that is a bit beyond my ability which was why I did it the way I did.   I'm pretty sure my brain would explode before I had a working version of what you suggested.

It's really not as difficult as you might think.  There are tools and libraries that already do most of the work.

Even if it was above your current abilities, there's still no good reason to include 4 characters in your iterations that aren't valid characters.  You've made your result set at least 4000 X bigger than it needs to be.

i'll keep this short, i've made a cipher, anyone who can crack it will receive 0.56 Bitcoins. Depending on how long it will take you i might increase the reward over time :) (timer 30 Days, after that i'll decide what to do)

here it is !

I do not think so. I find the puzzle/cipher very interesting. Although it would be good to win the prize, but it has been quite fun joining the group effort.
I still think the answer is still waiting for us...

I'm attempting a brute-force of all valid Base58Check private keys with those parameters, including the shuffling (since unshuffled had no results). Should be done within 10 minutes or so.

Edit: No match :/ Code I'm using is below. PermIterator gives all permutations of an int[] from 0 to length-1. Optimized since 5Juu2 is the only possible start to the private key.

There is no "look inside" for Hardcover.
And the look inside doesn't cover the hole book anyway.

The person who cracked the cipher does not want the Bitcoins on the private key an only cracked it for fun, so he sent the BTC back to the Adress, for the next person to crack it! so the game is still on! (for the bitcoins that is)

Well done cipher cracker , Good job . And thank you so much for letting us have another chance.

Good job.

I could crack it if #3 or #9 were known. On #3 I don't have the right book, on #9 I'm out of ideas now.

My "clue" for #9 I'm now sharing is:
4(1)x5(2)x1(1)x1(2)x*6* __-__

4(1)x
5(2)x
1(1)x
1(2)x
*6*
__-__

First: 4(1) - x = small
Second: 5(2) - x = small
Third: 1(1) - x = small
Fourth: 1(2) - x = small
= xxxx "four small letters" hinting

xxxx*6* + __-__ order hint: xx6xx

Then I bruteforced all valid key ranges from:
5Juu2CkB3AAaAaEcyH9dypNhDZ8fXgh6RQwwbo5xxxxx<all> to
5Juu2CkB3ZZzZzEcyH9dypNhDZ8fXgh6RQwwbo5xxxxx<all>

with xxxxx (#9) =
je6ba
po6ja
pu6ba
su6ba
jo6ja
ja6ja
hh6do (dont make it harder ... word(char))
thdo6 (dont make it harder then ... cancel third word "it" because "-" is interpreted as "cancel it" - in "__-__ ")
so6an
ud6as (derived from Udas)
di6oh (Oh dear ... word(char))
ue6ba (derived from ueBa6 posted here)
jm6jm n(1)=person, start from left, n(2)=person, start from right
pd6ba (Judas->Udas name(char))
pdBa6 (Judas->Udas & 6 = lower case)
ueBa6 (posted)
us6jc (from "jesus" and "christus", char(word#))
ii6th (What it really is: 1=The Last Supper, 2=Leonardo da Vinci, 3=Milan, 4=Italy - 5=visitor information)
UeBa6 (ueBa6 with big U)
ay6vr (Vacation Reply)
eo6ff (Hex bytes: byte(nibble))
eoFff (Hex bytes: *6*=F -> __-__)
sd6ba
each #3 from AAaAa to ZZzZz, <all> means all valid private keys for #10

still no luck.

Apparently I'm too dumb for cracking #9 or the cracker has the right book or both :-[

Another hint for combatants who are struggling like me: most of the chars in #10 are sitting in the checksum part of the B58 private key.

I'm looking at https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Wallet_import_format and don't see you can take advantage of that fact.
Don't you have to decode the base58 first before you can remove the 4 byte checksum?

It's just an interactive version, but it still doesn't explain how you can ignore the checksum without first decoding the entire base58 string. On a few tests with random keys, using the technique shown in the 2nd link I posted, the checksum characters on average affect the last 6 characters of the wif, but I did find a key that affected the last 9 characters.

You can't ignore the checksum without first decoding it. By converting it to base58 from base256 the last digits will be different and with each key it varies so it is not possible to know the checksum without decoding the base58

The intellegence in this thread intimidates me lol.

Quite a few of the puzzles are also just taking a step back and looking carefully. The ISBN number for instance, if you took notice of the numbers on the books you read, it was easy to spot where to look. The same goes for the morse code.

I agree though, some of the puzzles went way over my head too ;)

Don't you have to decode the base58 first before you can remove the 4 byte checksum?
Correct.

I know of two approaches to brute force crack a private key if some of the unknown characters are on the end:

Approach #1: Checking against checksum
1. Assemble your guess as a WIF string (base58)
2. Then do a base58_decode which outputs a 1+32+4=37 byte (1 extra byte when compressed but this puzzle has an uncompressed key).
3. Then re-calculate the checksum
4. If it matches, alert, else goto 1.
Chance of a false positive: 1:232

Approach #2: Check against hash160 (this is the way I go)
1. Split your guesses in many batches
2. Assemble the first guess in the batch as a base58 string
3. Then do a base58_decode which outputs a 37 or 38 byte binary
4. Take byte #1 to #32 (counting from #0) and load it into your EC library (yes, you can ignore the checksum here)
5. Do an EC point multiplication p=G*k where p=public key, G=base point and k=your first guess
6. If ripemd160(sha256(p)) matches target, alert and stop
7. Do an EC point addition p=p+G and goto 6. until 58n/232 repetitions has been made. n is the number of characters missing at the end
8. Open a new batch and goto 2

Approach #2 has advantages if #10 is unknown because large parts of #10 are sitting in the checksum. When directly dealing with the internal binary representation of the private key using EC math, you're "skipping" all possible invalid WIF private key combinations at once.
Approach #1 could be the better choice if you're sure that you have #10 correct.

Currently I don't do any bruteforce anymore because I ran out of ideas for #9. As soon I get new clues, I'll resume my bruteforce.

Note:
Some peoples asked for code (here/PM):
I'm handing out this hint for free but you have to do the coding work yourself. I'm fearing getting deanonymized if uploading my code here because it heavyly relies on code from other projects made by me.

The book is a road block for me without it I can't go any further .
I'm in a non English country .
English books are rare in bookshops  over here .
Ordering online take ages to deliver to my country .

As for brute forcing it's not fun at all.
And useless anyway at this stage especially if there is a reordering step.

5 days left till end of puzzle.
I hope the OP is preparing another one.

A reordering step isn't bad. A lightly optimized bruteforcer I wrote and was running on an anemic laptop managed to search 70*(10!) private keys for validity (although none were in fact valid).

There are 15 missing characters with known letter casing.

Code:
2     1    3     4     5     6     7     8     9     10
5Juu2 CkB3       EcyH9 dypNh DZ8fX gh6RQ wwbo5     6       E
           AAaAa                               __-_  -^^-^-

Uc="ABCDEFGHJKLMNPQRSTUVWXYZ123456789" (33 char)
lc="abcdefghijkmnopqrstuvwxyz123456789" (34 char)

try brute forcing this number of keys

(33*33*34*33*34)  * (34*34*33*34) * (34*33*33*34*33*34) * (!9)

And on top of that the casing may change as seen in solved levels.

But there is a difference between problems. This is a user created problem, not one that follows the rules of physics or maths perse.
Also, most people like them are not scrambling for half a bitcoin, but doing more important stuff probably ;)

From wikipedia ;)
Quote
In cryptography, a cipher (or cypher) is an algorithm for performing encryption or decryption—a series of well-defined steps that can be followed as a procedure

Yes, someone did crack this cipher but didn't want the prize(rich/kind?) :D
So, he sent back the cipher prize so that other people can enjoy it :)

"cyclic changes" --> Maybe changes in other parts of the puzzle apply here as well?

I found this puzzle today.  Looks like you solved most of it.  My take at 3:

Page(Word)-Letter-

counting numbers as words and skipping headlines gives

XFdBz

(x of flux, f of family, d of discussed, b of but, z of zygotes)

Note: page 192 seems to be 207 in PDF (the offset is not completely consistent, but 192 is the start of the chapter according to the table of contents).  The other pages have an offset of 16 and there are numbered pages in the vicinity.

Finally I managed to find the solution by searching 5Juu2CkB3XFdBzEcyH9dypNhDZ8fXgh6RQwwbo5* in 3h:50m:39s using an Intel i7-4xxx :)

The solution is:
#3 = XFdBz
#9 = ueBaf
#10 = eGYoMm5

I thank you very much for this interesting puzzle.

Congratulations ! ! you're the Second one to crack the Cipher! but the first one to keep the BTC :) Job well done!
Great BTC adress mate ;)

Thanks to everyone who have participant ! i hope you enjoyed the Cipher !

Congratulations! Good work :)

Can I ask who was the first one to solve the puzzle? Was it Coblee? Did he make the donation after solving it? :)

EDIT: I see now it was already solved a month ago, didn't even notice that :D

i have no idea actually who solved it the first time, i only got a Anonymous PM haha but i'm sure he/she is here somewhere.

glad you guys liked it. i might make a new Cipher soon, but at the moment i'm focusing on this project  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1183158.0 (sending a Bitcoin Node to space)

but i'm very eager to  make a new cipher right away tho. we'll see :)

Congratulations! Did I read right that your bruteforce tool solves at a rate of 100,000 keys/s?

Yes and no. I created one bruteforce tool which could do 100,000 tries in one second which was being used for finding brain wallets only.

For this challenge, I created another brute force tool which did following:
1. Split the guesses in many batches
2. Assemble the first guess in the batch as a base58 string
3. Then do a base58_decode which outputs a 37 byte binary
4. Take byte #1 to #32 (counting from #0) and load it into the EC library (yes, you can ignore the checksum here)

This gave me the boost to try 500,000 valid keys in one second.
My computer found the key in under 4 hours instead of cracking for days because I told the bruteforcer to try a limited character set first. It was:
  • Alphabet 6Fabcdefghijkmnopqrstuvwxyz for puzzle #9, char #1,2,4,5
  • Alphabet 6abcdefghijkmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHJKLMNPQRSTUVWXYZ for puzzle #9, char #3
Puzzle #10 was auto-solved by the ECDSA point addition loop.

I would be happy to hear from the anonymous cracker what his/her approach was because I'm curious.
