Who really uses bitcoin?
I do. I buy things with Bitcoin on a daily basis, both online and offline.

Quote
and for you Who is the typical bitcoin user?
All sorts of different folks, including: tech savvy people, geeks and nerds, anarchists, entrepreneurs, anyone interested in revolution and technological advancements, freelancers in foreign countries with poor banking facilities (there's billions of people with no access to international banking), investors, daytraders, speculators, and people valuing their privacy and independency.

Quote
Who doesn't use it?
Old people, bankers, the big audience and general sheeple. The latter mostly due to being ignorant of what Bitcoin is, how it works or why it's important, and equally ignorant of how they're being royally fucked over by their current money system, believing "it just works".

Quote
And why does it matter?
Because it's about time the complete and total power and control over the creation of our money and financial infrastructure is being taken away from a handful of banks, and given back to society.

All kind of people on all kind of area , however we can't deny the fact that Silk road and deepweb played a big role on Bitcoin growth so bitcoin is actually used in a lot of illegal stuff (less then before with silk road shutdown but still ... )
I myself use it but not that much , I see bitcoin more as an investment for now so I prefer to hold then buy stuff using it & Hopefully that will change in the future .
for what comes to people who don't use it then those would be definitely the banks , even though some banks has shown real interest on Bitcoin like Société General & BNP PARIBAS .

Who uses it: I do on a regular basis. I earn in bitcoin and pay what I can for in bitcoin. Since getting a debit card that now means that I pay for almost everything in bitcoin.

The typical user: At present people like us but the numbers are growing and its no longer just tech savvy people.

Who doesn't: Way to many still and this does matter as we need more users to drive adoption even further.

Yes. Medium of exchange and investment opportunity.
Bitcoin now a days mostly used for online transactions for the alternative to Paypal. Where ever Paypal has played a role or not at all available, there would be a big chances for using bitcoin more effectively.

Oh, well, since 99.9+% of all drug and weapon business takes place in US Dollars and Euros, I didn't consider that area to be really significant. But sure, I guess it works pretty well for that sort of activity too.

I guess This and the blackmarkets are currently the biggest users of bitcoin.

i think mostly young people who are interested in this new technology are using bitcoin. the rest who own bitcoin are the ones that are trying to make money and i don't consider them as using bitcoin, they are just traders and are in it for the money.

Quote
Who doesn't use it? and why does it matter?

older generation and practically people who don't want to get into trying new stuff even if it is better.

this needs to change and bitcoin should be used by everybody not just a group of people if it is to grow big and become mass adopted and replace fiat as we know it.

Bitcoiners are usually those who are interested in freelance jobs, who want to trade in bitcoins and those who want to sell their stuff for bitcoins. Some are those who are interested in just learning about virtual currency and they mainly mine bitcoins. or me, I use bitcoins as another payment option except PayPal or Payza as many were using this currency instead of PP which can be chargedback easily while bitcoins cannot be chargedback.

Who really uses bitcoin?

anybody who understand it, will start to use it immediately, or at least getting involved.

Who is the typical bitcoin user?

this question can be answered by the first answer :P

Who doesn't use it?

from my point of view, there is only two possible answers to this question:
  • anybody who didnt know/understand/beleive it
  • anybody with dark interests lol

and why does it matter?

let them not getting involved during the next two years, that why i can get more bitcoins cheaper :P

Who really uses bitcoin?
All peiole who has bitcoin to hold and spend. They will more likely use it so those are people who does.

Who is the typical bitcoin user?
Someone who uses bitcoin in a daily basis. They earn and spend them. Those are.

Who doesn't use it? and why does it matter?
Obviously those people who don't have any idea what bitcoin is, they don't use it and more likely will never use it not until they have a glimpse of what bitcoins is. It matters because bitcoin needs to be popularize more to everyone. Every person who will be in the bitcoin community is a big major leap on the ongoing grow of our very own bitcoin

There are certainly a lot of casino users that actively use bitcoin at the moment.

Exactly who ever into the gambling and some hidden activities they are using more as of now and that's why bitcoin will not disappear faster until some other better coins come in for these purposes. And also because of these kind usage bitcoins are not going easily to mainstream. Simple answer to your question is as of now bitcoins are using for mostly illegal deals or to avoid taxes or hide their transaction details.

I think the typical user is a male late 20's to late 40s.

The non typical user is someone who is not using technology, (usually) older people.  I know I would have a hard time convincing my grandma to use Bitcoin, she doesn't have a computer, no smart phone, no tablet no internet.  No way she is going to be on Bitcoin ever.

right. the black market(including HYIPs, cloud mining, etc) +gambling has over 85% from BTC market. The rest of them are speculative traders and people who earning pennies(they are paid to surf, etc) from their online activities.

Why would you use Bitcoin for online shopping? You already have debit cards/credit cards with zero fees and no risk.

Who really uses bitcoin?

Im one of it. I used bitcoins for some real life spendings when my budget is short. Recently I pay our electricity bill with my bitcoins because I will spend my salary in my upcoming out of town.

Who doesn't use it?

Of course the people who doesn't know bitcoin and those people that preferred fiat over bitcoin.

why does it matter?

There's no questions in why. So be it if people doesn't use it or not. Eventually all will came in one place.

- For me, the typical bitcoin users were geeks but right now I will also include those non-geeks who wants to earn online (that's me)
- Computer illiterate people don't use it ; people who don't have any idea and don't care what bitcoin is (obviously :D )
- It matters because they were getting out dated, they are missing a great technology that everyone should know ;)

It will take one decade (or maybe less) until we see the average joes out here doing payments regularly on Bticoin. They need to see benefits for them to drop Paypal or whatever they are using, otherwise they will continue using whatever it's out there already.

As far as I can see in my environment, the real users are those that use it as an investment / way to earn money. But as some other say, many of these people will use it to buy things if there were more shops and services offered.

The typical bitcoin user (again, from my limited perspective) is someone who invest on it. Either buying some from his wage and holding, or earning it online and investing /holding it.

Most people don't use it because they do not know about it. A few others, think it is risky. And other still find it too complicated to use at the moment (buying bitcoin with currency to use it, then not having much options to spend it).

and why does it matter?

Because if you don't figure out why people don't want to use Bitcoin - you'll never get over that hurdle and you put the whole notion of societal adoption at risk. You don't need every single person to accept it as a currency - just enough for merchants to accept it on the same level as fiat.

Unlike fiat money, bitcoin seldom needs to be used, it is a value certificate similar to your bank long term saving account, you might only touch it several years later. Or, you can use it to do international trade with much faster payment time (given that you and your business partner in another country have already established a stable business relationship), but the required skill set is too high for average Joe

there are plenty of payment processors, credit cards and so on. why would you need Bitcoin to make a payment?
as you said, Bitcoin is not for the average "Joe" so it is a niche market and it will remain like this. :)

According to popular belief of public opinion bitcoin is used by terrorists, anarchists, conspiracy theorists and crooked criminals who want to lurk under radar of authorities.
Law abiding citizens should not associate with bitcoin at all. Why am I using it? Because I don't give a damns about idiotic political correctness of the mass media.

BTC won't be adopted; it's fishy, not regulated, slow and so on.

The people likes regulations, safety, etc. BTC will remain for speculative trading, dark markets.
It has no advantage over any traditional payment systems like debit/credit cards/bank wires and payment processors like Paypal.

It's just "trendy" for now. Nothing more.

The trend is for regulation(see the exchangers who are looking for licenses which means AML, KYC and GOVs rules in the end) and this will be the end of Bitcoin. Why? Because the dark market( over 85% from BTC) will leave this e-currency when it will be "regulated".

- i would not read news regarding to hacking of the Bitcoin wallets  all the time..
- i have to remember you the BTC wallets hacking is not a news anymore on the Bitcoin's market. It's a habit. everyday, a lot of wallets are hacked.

so, tell me one advantage of using Bitcoin against traditional payment systems. do not tell me about privacy because it does not exist anymore. all the exchangers requires papers.

- i have to remember you the BTC wallets hacking is not a news anymore on the Bitcoin's market. It's a habit. everyday, a lot of wallets are hacked.

so, tell me one advantage of using Bitcoin against traditional payment systems. do not tell me about privacy because it does not exist anymore. all the exchangers requires papers.

the hacking about bitcoin, it's only because people don't know how to use their desktop

i still have all my bitcoin here from two years already, no one has ever stolen them, and this is why? because i simply don't download random .exe form the web or surf  malicious site

credit card are at risk of hacking every day, they can clone your card easily nowadays, and steal everything before you can even be aware of it and block the card

nerds, hackers, terrorists, speculators at the moment

bankers are slowly moving in....
i doubt terrorists are using bitcoin, its like putting all your financial records out in public for everyone to see, you just have to find em. and im pretty sure NSA has the technology to find these kind of transactions.

Probably they are using it nowadays, I heard some news regarding to ISIS supporters using bitcoin to fund those terrorists. And due to its "anonymous" (which is completely not) nature, its very possible it can be used by terrorists.

Everything has its bad and good sides. Everything!! Just to concentrate on bad sides of something and stay oblivious to all of the advantages is very hypocritical at least.

Are terrorist using it? Maybe! Just like they are using Fiat, gold, diamonds and whatever can facilitate their operations. We cannot really do anything about. This is not even worth of discussion!

There are certainly a lot of casino users that actively use bitcoin at the moment.
I think this is where people end up using it for after a while. The temptation is enormous to multiple your bits when you can't determine an actual value of it. One minute is it is worth $0.02 the next it is worth $0.05.

I think everyone can use Bitcoin, i don't believe about existing "typical" bitcoin users, of course there is some people interested a little more than others about cryptocurrencies, i think they are a while using bitcoin more than others, but it's not general because we see many ppl just use btc to purchase goods and services or pay some fees, without really being interested about the cryptocurrencies world

For me I think its true since bitcoin is hard to trace and criminals will definitely love that feature specially on crimes online

Carders were one good example of criminals that loves bitcoin as they used to buy stuffs with hacked credit cards then sell it to someone with bitcoin as payment.

That's why the legal status of bitcoin varies from country to country and is still undefined because of that illegitimate use of bitcoin. Monitoring the possibility of bitcoin usage in money laundering and other illegal purposes are really the first priority by them rather than the benefits of bitcoin is. This is the reason why regulating bitcoin in some Central Bank per country is not yet present at the moment.

With "Who really uses Bitcoin" I think OP meant real Bitcoin usage as in purchasing stuff, using Bitcoin to send and receive money, etc. And not really investing in it and holding coins.
