nope, select the color when you purchase, multi color screens are too expensive and don't look as good.

A Red text on black background screen was asked for by a customer, it was going to add ~15 USD to the price.

White on black and black on white would be ~3 USD more, but look boring so I don't buy these.

Its not a RPI, it is ESP8266 chip with LUA code.

If you know LUA or use a bit of google fu you could add sound buzzers, temperature sensors and other things.

There is quite a few GPIO (like 5) left on the chip and one Analog input/output.

Added,the price is coming from coinbase and bitcoinaverage (http://cryptofolio.info/api/screen?@Code=PKR&@SecondLine=LTC) as well, with such a large value it fills the entire 16 characters on the top line.
If the BTC price triples you will lose the R from PKR.  (I could fix this when it happens though, patch the server to drop the cents)



I would prefer if you buy through the website, if you are buying two add both to the cart and then you will only pay shipping once.
I suggest one of each color.

I just ran the calcs, my average price for shipping is 23 AUD, at the moment that its 17.10 USD on xe.com.

I add a small bit for currency fluctuations and you can never find this good a rate.


If you want to order three when I open the site again, got for it ill just bubble wrap them and put in padded bag (no box).

Warning though, the insurance only covers 100 AUD, two device is already ~105 AUD.

Also two devices is already ~300 grams the padded bag has max 500 grams, so probably cant do four.

All orders have shipped out, had a little hiccup last night when my soldering iron broke  :o

Everyone who has ordered got a email about an issue setting up the devices with iPhones/iPads with an update link that fixes the issue. Message me if you didn't get it, or have problems updating it. All devices from now on will have this fixed by default.

Had 2 WIFI boards turn up today, this is probably not enough to open orders again. Need one of my larger orders to come in.

No im using a samsung note android phone.
After i put in the wifi name and password. It restarts and then nothing happens.
Says connection failed.
Tried on both the ones i ordered. Doesnt seem to go past one step or another.

Weird, do you have any non standard characters in WIFI name or password (like !*/$#\ "  ) ? (though this should be fine (had to put a lot of code to handle this)).

The only other thing I can think of that will cause this is if your WiFi router is set to 5 GHz?

Try change it to 2.4 GHz, or if your router supports it add a guest 2.4 GHz network.


Edit: the obvious cause is typo in SSID or password, but I assume if you tried for that long you have it correct.

Edit2: It also expects the router to assign IP via DHCP.  If you turned DHCP off turn it back on or try get to the devices MAC address when you connect with phone and map MAC to IP in router (fixed host).

Edit3: same train of thought, if you have mac address filtering turned on in the modem, your modem will block the device.

Edit4: perhaps try closer to WiFi router, I have never had any range issues but my place is smallish.


Note: Before that Connection Fail message it has tried to connect 20 times, so its not for lack of trying ;)

2. Before the "connection fail" it says Configuring WIFI on the top row and your SSID on line2 (Like the image under step 11 in the guide (http://afkdata.com/AFKDATA_SETUP_GUIDE.pdf))?

I checked the router and it is 2.4 ghz and also there is no mac address being rerouted.
For some reason it is not accepting the ssid info or not connection to it.
What do you think i should do.

P.s: this is the only step that i didnt do in the setup. Select this message and then be sure to press YES or the phone will drop back to cellular networks.
That is because it never asked me to. It just connected without and issue.
Do you think this has something to do with it ?

yes simple wifi ticker screen, you could add things if your a programmer/electronics guy there is plenty of GIPO

I had info from a customer who also backed Tixie, they took the money from backers and ran.  (or a very very slow at processing the refunds)

For Australian customers, its probably easier if you order through the site (when I set back to in stock) and I just refund ~5 USD (of the 17.50 USD)  (express shipping and GST payed out the rest of shipping cost)

Eventually I will put a button to swap to AUD.

Yeah, we don't have that. You need to pay import tax on everything above ~€25, which this is. Worst thing is that local post companies charge somewhere between €11 and €17 because they paid upfront for you. That's some insane fee's.

The Netherland and yes, it sucks. I mean, I don't mind paying VAT on expensive items (phones, high end coins, etc), but for this it's quite excessive (it increases the unit price by 41.37%).

Alright, I've picked up the device and it looks pretty sweet. However, what can I do to disable the altcoin section and show the Bitcoin price in USD and EUR? Can the screen be dimmed?

I can change the remote endpoint to fix BTC as a alt to USD, Then you can put EUR in the currency box and BTC in the alt box. Shouldn't be to hard ill look at it tonight.

The little black plug on the left side turns off the backlight, the code can only also turn on and off the backlight.

If you removed the little black plug (jumper) and put a  potentiometer as a Variable Resistor (http://www.instructables.com/id/Wire-a-Potentiometer-as-a-Variable-Resistor/) the screen light would dim.
(think my little brother made this mod to his own one)

Small tip: I have attached a small mobile charging battery back to the device and was surprised with the outcome.
One charge to the battery pack and it has been 4 days without the need to recharge it.
The battery consumption of the device is so low that it keeps going on.

It makes it easy to carry the ticker with me anywhere. Have a wifi device connected in the second port of the battery pack. It looks kind of funny but hey does the job and i dont have to keep checking my phone :)

I did do some testing on battery with something like this (http://www.amazon.com/Duracell-Instant-Charger-Includes-Universal/dp/B002FU6KF2)

I was only getting 7 hours, perhaps because it was a old battery pack.

Have the notification mode set to stars on battery, when the battery is flat the WiFi is the first to go and it gets stuck on a price. At least with stars you will see when to charge it.

Edit: this was before the watchdog code, I bet it reboots every 5 minutes when it gets flat now.

Well, a battery pack with only 1150mAh is pretty disappointing. :P

and the 1st line would show say BTC price

and the 2nd line would show your combined HOARD price from the public blockchain address

I got mine today as well - I was out of town, so it actually arrived a few weeks ago (faster than I expected).  Really quite cool - and the way you have the esp setup to configure is very clever.  Definitely a fun piece of geek-ery to have around the house... :)

I need to upgrade to the newer version I think, although I don't see any issues with the one I have.  You should consider adding the version number on the admin page, just to make it clear what is what.

I looked through the thread and your docs - what exactly is the difference between 'Stars' and 'Backlight' on the update notification?  I'm assuming with backlight you toggle it on or off, but not sure what stars are - I turned it on, but nothing seems to happen...

I think I just answered my own question - I was watching it and asterisk's appeared on the far left and right edges of the display, so presumably that was indicating it was going out and fetching data.

There is always a web interface, if you want it acessable over the Internet you will have to portfowrd  it in your router.

You cant set the exchange it uses the average from all the sources at cryptofolio. This was done to keep it simple, and it allows for good prices if one of the exchanges goes down ( if a price is older then 11 mins I exclude from average)

I wont stop you from creating your own endpoint that meets your requirments. Though you will need to change the LUA code in the device slightly to call your server.

Note if you set second line to BTC it forces USD on the second line allowing you to change the top to CNY or EUR like:

When the ETH price jumped over 10 I recognised a strange behaviour: below 10 the price is shown with two digits after the decimal point (like ETH 9.67 USD). Above 10 the price is shown with only one digit after the decimal point (like ETH 10.4 USD). This does not make sense. Especially when the BTC price in the first line is shown with two digits after the decimal point (like BTC 452.53 USD).

I assume that the number of decimal points is not coded on the device but at the server where the data is get from. Can you change that? A ticker does only make sense when the data is shown accurate.

It's by design so that it stays centered. Just dropping the least significant character.

With the current implementation, I can see extreme small changes in BTC price but ETH price changes are only visible if the price changes a full percent! This is not how a real-time ticker should work.

Alternative solution: if you want to have it centred, you can use three digits after the decimal point, when the price is in range between [10.000, 99.999]. Then, both tickers will behave similar.

I had some problems connecting to a apple airport recently, I did manage to get it connected to the guest Network. Though for some reason the guest wifi was blocking access to the net.

If you can try disable 5ghz so it's just 2.4 and try setting the wifi channel to 6.

Try also connect to guest wifi if your router has the option.

Does anyone know how to modify this device to have it show more than just the 2 lines?

So it can scroll more coins, for example:

if i wanted to see:

ETC
DASH

and more...

Could that somehow be a option to have it scroll or simply flash to the next coin in the list every 30 seconds or so?

I see in the UI screen that you can choose your alt, but what if you added the feature to choose maybe 10 alts to flash or scroll through,  is that possible, or too much work ?

Note: I remove the white QC sticker during build.

The older screens had a mix of dark and light PCB and required different resistor values for the backlight to look the best.

This new batch of 100 screens  is all the same :)

Think I have like 2 of the old Green screens left as they seem to be less popular.

Before you order try turning the little blue contrast pot on the back, perhaps I didn't set it that well on urs or it moved in transit.  

If you have a small bit of wire or a paperclip you can change a little with out taking the back off.

3. Note down the COM ports in the list
4. Plug in Device and Wait a ~ 1 minute, hope windows installs driver for you
5. Press arrow next to COM Port
6. If there is one extra COM port select the new port from list (if not install USB com port driver from folder 1.)
7. Look at Circuit board where USB plugs in
8. Set Yellow or Black based on colour
9. Press List Files  -> may get error this is normal
10. Press List Files again  - no error this time
11. Press Update.
12. Let it do its thing.


Don't need to do folder 2. because this should already be in the device.



Linux or OSX instructions are much more complicated.


EDIT: the target size for http_client.lua is size 3317  - the top box is wrong.

I'm getting "Connection Fail" After following the steps, hmm. Could it be that I'm on an iphone?

Easy way to check install Chrome on iphone (actually safari browser not iphone was the issue), the old 1.2 code had a bug for safari. All devices shipped recently should have at least v1.3 though.  Is ur wifi set to 2.4 or 5gh ?  You can check with wifi scanner app or in ur modem wifi settings, also make sure you get wifi network name and password correct, case sensitive!

Mac address filtering in router would also give connection fail as would not running a dhcp server. (These are advanced modem settng most people leave alone)

Can I have it in three different FIAT displays?, I want to see it in EUR, USD and SEK. But when trying to add a 2nd Currency (Except for SEK in the currency field, as I have BTC on the Alt line to get USD) It does not work on the display.

Can I somehow get rid of the LTC or replace it with something else? I don't know the version of my device, but it surely is the most early one I believe.

yep when the device starts note down the IP address that is on the screen

Enter the IP in to chrome,firefox or IE

change the LTC in the altcoin box to XAU or XAG for gold or sliver.

You can also change the currency box to EUR or CNY (if its not already) or something and enter BTC in the Altcoin box and you will get USD BTC price on second line.

I know how to set up the device, just wasn't aware of how to get rid of the altcoin price.

Any particular reason for which the code is not open source and on Github? This could really expand the potential use cases of the device if there are people familiar with the language used.

Edit: I would be happy for someone else to offer a alternate build pointing at a different server but that's a whole lot of work most people wont want to do.

I think you did a great job at a very affordable price with a beautiful design to boot.

The coding is great and the OP can only do so much to please everyone.

It is a product he made and is selling. He did also make a lot of changes over time from a bunch of requests.

Open source is a great idea.

I think if you have any special requests you could ask the OP what he might charge to make such a change as it does take time.  I personally asked him to make some changes and offered to pay him for them (his time) but he released them anyway for free.

My AFKData unit keeps resetting itself randomly. No matter if I power it down before shutting down my computer, if I connect it through a hub, etc. It's quite annoying to have to setup the unit every 20 hours or so. Any idea what it could be? :-\

I was having that problem with mine.  Thought it might have been power, but supplied a 2A adapter and same issue.  
Modified the code a little for logging and found it happened when it would lose wifi signal.

All in all, I ended up replacing the ESP/NodeMCU unit.  Cheap fix ($5) and it never had a problem again.  Couple of months ago.

I stealth put out a new v1.5 last night, the only change is that it will reboot after 5 mins on the connection fail screen.

A bigger display would probably put the device out of most peoples price range. I had a request for same size screen in red and black even my suppliers in china wanted to charge more then twice the price I pay for the screens and strongly recommended against this because it looks bad apparently.

What about screens like this (https://www.aliexpress.com/item//1814940721.html)? They are cheap but look decent (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8YBxdIau6A). Might be worth a try if you ask me. I would however recommend hiding the bottom bar of icons as it might confuse people, so maybe also create a whole new case for these units. ;D

I would love it if you were able to do a version 2 of this where we can price alts to btc and dollars. Flashy colors and bigger screens are not needed for me, how they look and operate is perfect right now!

I had the opposite problem, it was fine for me actually improved my productivity as I didn't need to have graphs with he price open while working.

The problem I had and the reason I don't have one at work any more was it got a few too many spiteful comments, especially when the price changed drastically down to ~400 AUD last time.

I also work at a very old large government company and they are all very old school, so it was rubbing people the wrong way.


Also I had to ship the one I had on my desk to keep up with the orders right at the start (when their was a queue and the site was set to out of stock).


Its perfect for next to the TV, bedrooms not so much.

I just reset the device to connect to a different network.  When I go to connect to network id afkdata, it asks me to enter a password to connect.  What's going on here?

Sweet just bought one of the blue and whites - any idea how long they take to come?

I've had an issue for a while now, and attempted to update to 1.6 in order to resolve it (which it unfortunately did not).
Basically all I could see was an empty screen (after it connects to the Wi-Fi or post setup with stars on the corner). It seems that something was triggering the "Json not found". After minor debugging attempts, it seems to throw the following error:
"PANIC: unprotected error in call to Lua API (http_client.lua:12: attempt to concatenate global 'posStart' (a nil value))".

They just drop their settings. I see there is an update, but don't know how to apply.

ok, can you get one that has dropped its setting and plug it in to a PC, use the updater in the 3rd folder and press list files.

Im interested to see the results, the first time you will probably get a error just press it again.

oh also it has to be on the correct COM port in the list. (edit: probs not com1)

Updated the firmware, interestingly it didn't erase the wifi settings, but I think it was done correctly.  It's holding for 20 mins without resetting itself, I will update in a few hours or tomorrow.

Edit: no luck, it keeps dropping settings.

3. change to tab 2 "config"
4. on the line that says Internal click the cog
5. use the file dialog to select nodemcu-master-12-modules-2016-03-04-23-35-16-float.bin file from folder 2.
6. make sure it no longer says internal.
7. swap back  to first tab "operation"
8. select com port
9. Flash(F)
10. once done unplug from PC
11. Inside folder 3. run afkupdater.exe

14. If there is one extra COM port select the new port from list (if not install USB com port driver from folder 1.)

this was the issue, just before okcoin usd went down 4 hours ago it sent me the price as 15151 USD this put the averages out.

The BitcoinCash price seems to be reading the wrong price. It's showing $150 USD
There are a few other coins that are also off vs. CoinMarketCap / exchange pricing.
Is this an API call error to the servers or something else.

I’m not sure if it is being updated or not, but it’s not using CoinMarketCap which is why you are seeing a discrepancy.

Since a few day your bitcoin ticker has connection problems.
Most of the time it shows no price. It works only from time to time.
I habe two tickers. It is the same on both tickets.
Can you please check this?

The ticker uses: https://cryptofolio.info/welcome/coinsList - as the source for data.
As of now it's just showing an error page.

So it might be gone for good or the server might just need a reboot and he will get to it.
The files that it runs are editable so if you can setup another server giving the same info you could just tweak the URL that it goes to and get it working.

None that I could find, and no notes on what data the server is giving out.

- In "3.Updater/Code/" open http_client.lua with a text editor
- Near the bottom replace cryptofolio.info with the url of a new host serving a compatible api
- Follow the original procedure to update the device

No one knows... :( Perhaps the "only" way to get this is to follow this advice.

CloudFlare changed something and screwed a bit of crap code I wrote all those years ago, I can't seem to override it in my CloudFlare account. Turning off CloudFlare at this stage is not an option, I've been ddosed before and it's not pleasant for me or my ISP.

First thing I did was a hacky fix to the existing code base, while this works V1.7 it could break again at any time. I then spent almost the whole weekend rewrite the codebase in the device from scratch in a different language, I've called this 2.0 Beta.

Both are in the normal spot on afkdata.com to download. If you decide to use the 2.0 Beta and then don't like it to go back you need to use the flasher from folder 2. In 1.7 once that's done restart the device and use the exe from folder 3.

I'm interested in feedback on the 2.0 Beta flashing.

I wanted to update to V2.0
I connected the device to my computer
I downloaded V2.0
I started flash.bat
I was asked for a COM-Port
Whatever I input (1, 2, 3, 4, COM1, COM2, CoM3, COM 4, .....) I get only error messages

What do I make wrong?

Check device manager under ports when you have your device unplugged probably only COM1 there.

Plug in device and refresh device manager (F5) there should now be a extra COM port.

COM4 is given as the example.   1, 2, 3, 4 and COM 1 , COM 2 etc won't work either.

So COM(number) same as it's listed in device manager.

Also unplugging the jumper from the side (so the back light is off) will give a better chance it's detected in the computer.

If that fails try install the driver from folder 1. In v1.7

Beta 2.0 will not reset if you have yellow circuit board. If you were one of the first seven customers you have yellow circuit board and no external reset button in a plastic box it's not going to reset any more, please use v1.7 if you require this.

You can change all the displayed currency by navigating to the IP address shown on screen during startup, when it comes out of beta I'll put more sensible defaults.

I just updated the batch file to give more verbose output.

As for your device that's not detected very strange especially because you had one that worked. Can you unplug the side jumper and plug in to the computer?

It is a green circuit board and it has a reset button. When I press this button it says "Welcome afkdata" and then automatically connects to my WLAN. It is does not show the IP adress for the configuration anymore

My ABN has lapsed and personal circumstances have changed so unfortunately, probably not. It's a shame because I have way to many parts here in my garage.

If you want to give soldering a go or know someone who can do it for you think you may need to swap the esp8266 board on your device 1 just make sure to wire it up the same. If the computer can't see it you can't update it unfortunately. The are about $7 -10 AUD from ali express, I would send you one but it would cost $25 shipping.

There are some other tickers available but your ticker is by far the best. I like the design so much.

I just updated a unit to v2 successfully (I think)... But when I fire it up, it says "WELCOME AFKDATA" then "SETUP MODE" but then nothing. It used to offer up the prompt to connect via wifi to 192.168.1.7 etc., but no more. It just stays on "SETUP MODE"... What am I doing wrong?

LATE EDIT: Sorry, holy crap, it works beautifully. There's no need to wait for the unit to prompt anything. Just connect to it via WIFI, and you're greeted (on the controlling device) with a beautiful interface. Love it!

Do you have all the parts to make the units? If you have the complete hardware setup then it might be worth it to find someone who can do the assembly.
You know it's a working / sellable item so you could probably find someone to take care of the rest and just grab a % of the sales.

On the first line, once you are logged into the setup, change AUD to USD or whatever currency you like.

On the second line add each alt coin you wish to see from the available list of coins link separated by a comma then click submit to apply your changes.

In the new setup dialog that pops up automatically with v2 (not accessible via the browser), I no longer see the currency and altcoin fields that I used to encounter.

It's a two step process now. Note the IP under "Connected" during startup (https://youtu.be/-vIwev8wiSc). Navigate to that on phone/laptop/PC to finish setup.

There will be a 2.0 final at some stage with more sensible defaults and perhaps pause on the IP address screen for a bit longer and any other sensible changes people suggest.

Aha! Worked like a charm of course! (I dunno why it didn't occur to me to try re-accessing the unit via its acquired IP address. I think I was conditioned by the old all-in-one process to look for currency designation alongside wifi setup.) Thanks as always.

If I added resistors to the jump wires on the backpack you could remove them, it makes the screen much brighter though. You could also try unplug the four cables in to the backpack and plug in again, perhaps not making the best contact. Be sure not to mess up the order.

Hi - I just tried to get this awesome little ticker working again (thanks for continuing to support this!) but after I tried running the updater for 1.7 I see that it says lua: cannot open init.lua and the screen is blank and doesn't load at all.  Any advice on how to fix? Appreciate it.

Give the beta 2.0 a go, the update simplified. Just run flash.bat and type in com port.

Device setup is slightly different but I'm sure most can figure it out.
