Title: Good news! From today the Turing Trust now accepts bitcoin donations!
Post by: The_Turing_Trust on March 24, 2016, 12:17:04 PM
In a nutshell we reuse old computers that would normally end up on a landfill sites and send them out to schools in Africa. If you are able to support us please use the link below. We'll be embracing bitcoin fully and will be setting up a full node in the near future.

We're a small charity but looking to grow in the coming years. We are aiming to put 4000 computers in schools in Malawi alone in the next 3 years and so any funding brought in by bitcoin donations is much appreciated.

We'll often get laptops with missing chargers or desktops with missing components so Purse.io might come in handy for us to get these parts.

Thank you very much for your donation :)

First time heard about Turing Trust, and looks like media never make a news about it.
I'll help when i got my payment next month.

BTW, do you sell your bitcoin before use it to help others?

We are a relatively small charity but as i posted above we aim to put 4000 computers in schools in Malawi over the next 3 years and so we're looking to grow considerably.

I am not at liberty to say how we use the bitcoin received as its a collective decision. For me personally though i would look to pay people with it and explore future use cases in the developed and developing world. Bitcoin the protocol is an amazing invention that has opened the door to some amazing things!

Thanks for your interest :)

Well if you searched it on google you will find a few info on this charity and it convinced me to donate :)

@Turing
Do you have a photo proof or some sort of your donation ?
I might be blind here but I can't find any of it on your site
Putting the photo on your post might help convinced people to donate to your cause, just like any other charity websites :)

Never heard of your organization either, good to see you accepting Bitcoin donations! You'll definitely have success with it. And good to see computers being reused for a greater cause :)

Yes we are based in Edinburgh, UK. The reason we don't list our address is that people were dumping computers in bulk outside our front door (some in the rain). We are currently open 3 days a week but hope to be open full-time asap. When that happens we will update our website and google with our address

Thanks for bringing this up. Our machines get taken to dedicated e-waste facilities once they reach the end of their life. Many machines that get donated here in the UK would actually end up being scrapped and dumped in landfill sites so we're reducing the problem not adding to it.

Well it is for a good cause, and I would rather see children in Africa benefit from this, than seeing it go to waste in a landfill. I bet the recycle companies are not very happy with this initiative, because they

reclaim quite a lot of precious metals, including gold from these old computers. I know there has been some complaints from some of the African nations, saying that Africa is becoming the landfill for 1st

world countries old mobile phones... I am saying, Go for it... you getting it for free!   Keep up the good work... I will donate some.

So you're telling me that the people likely to illegally dispose of hazardous waste in UK are ...donating it to you as an alternative?

Good to see another non-profit organization accepting Bitcoin - especially one in the technology field! It would be good if you could download a soft Bitcoin wallet into the computer before you send them out to Africa. Anyway, would donate some Bitcoin when I am not in a tight budget. :).

Will the Turing Trust be supporting the Bitcoin ecosystem in any other ways?
Yes, in the near future we will be hosting a full node to support the network.
This is what we need, some organization that will support Bitcoin.

It is really a good news for those who are their donators and who want to donate them, as it is much easy to pay for a donation through bitcoin. but donating through banks and cheque it take some time and effort to go to there, but with bitcoin you can donate from home with a few clicks.

What are you using the donations for if people are bringing old computers for free to your door step? Do you pay a lot of money for shipping costs to African countries or the goods will be transported free of charge as you are a charity organization? What do you think about Raspberry Pi Zero the $5 computer? You could get a whole bunch of them for less than the shipping fees on these old PC's you are sending out right?

Not to mention the fact that it's just reasonably cheaper to donate with Bitcoin than any other money sending medium. Apparently, you get charged $5 to pay through Western Union which I never ever knew.

Good to hear.I am sure if some reputed NGO like yours adopt and endorse bitcoin,it will going to help bitcoin in its growth.Bitcoins is often associated with some bad things which keep a lot of people away from it.NGOs like Turing Trust involvement will dispel the misconceptions from a common man's mind

I'm not at liberty to say how the bitcoin donations will be spent as it will be a joint decision.

We did an assessment last year and found that we could deliver computers at £10 per unit to certain places where it may have cost £80 to buy similar spec machines locally. So it makes financial sense and also saves computers in the UK from being scrapped.

We are big fans of the Raspberry Pi at the Turing Trust. Later this year we'll have finished our first off-grid classroom made from an old shipping container fitted out with Pi's and a PV solar system. You can read more here if you are interested:

Very good point. We are aware the public's perception of Bitcoin isn't always very positive so we hope we can play a part in helping to change that.
